In order to investigate the distribution and density of root-knot nematodes in economic crops, samples were collected from 3,226 fields of 18 economic crops. Nematodes were extracted using a modified Baermann's funnel technique. Identification of races was based on the differential host-test for Meloidogyne spp. by Tayler and Sasser. M. hapla was dominant in fields in the middle parts of Korean peninsula; M. incognita, in the southern parts, and distribution of M. javanica was limited to Jeju island and southern seaside areas. Two races of M. arenaria identified in this study were races 1 and 2. The three races identified in M. incognita were races, 1, 2 and 3. Of these races, race 1 of M. arenaria and race 3 of M. icognita were identified for the first time in Korea.
Surveys were conducted on the occurrence of nematodes in the root systems of 1-3-year old Cymbidium hybida Swartz cultivated for export in Korea. The most frequently detected plant-parasitic nematode was Ditylenchus sp. with 4.7, 43.7, and 49.7/200 cc growth medium in 1, 2, and 3 year-old cymbidiums, respectively. And the densities of non-parasitic nematodes, dorylaimids, were 35.3, 70.5, and 155.8/200 cc growth medium in 1, 2, and 3-year-old cymbidiums, respectively. Three-year-old cymbidiums collected from Siheung, Ansan, and Gimpo had low densities of Aphelenchus sp. and Aphelenchoides sp. with under 40 individuals/pot, and the dorylaimid densities were 56-824/pot. To evaluate the effects of nematicides on Ditylenchus sp. in cymbidium, Emamectin benzoate EC, Fosthiazate SL, and Cadusafos CS were tested at two farms in Ansan and Gimpo. Emamectin benzoate EC showed control effects of 75.7 and 89.5%, whereas Fosthiazate SL and Cadusafos CS showed 27.2 and 65.3% and 30.1 and 90.5% control effects in the tests.
The results of survey on the nematodes associated with sapling from 8 Forestry Experiment Stations(F.E.S.) in Korea are reported herein. A total of 35 species under 20 genera, 11 families, and 2 orders were identified from the soils around the roots of 119 tree species and amongst them, Xiphinema insigne is unrecorded species for Korea and Geocenamus sp. is a new species. Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, which showed the highest detection rate (D.R.) from all F.E.S., except Nambu F.E.S, was the dominant species among the nematodes associated with saplings. The D.R. of T. claytoni was the highest in Ch’ungnam F.E.S. by 100% from 15 saplings sampled, followed by 87.5% in Kangwon, 66.6% in Kyongbuk, 58.3% in Cheonbuk, 48.1% in Ch’ungbuk, 41.3% in Kyongki, and 40% in Cheonnam F.E.S. Other important nematode species which showed very high densities by stations are; Criconemella morgensis (D.R.: 37.5%), Helicotylenchus digonicus (D.R. : 35%), Pararotylenchus pini (D.R.: 37%), Tylenchorhynchus nudus (D.R.: 37.9%), Criconemella informis (D.R.: 27.5%), and Meloidogyne sp. (D.R.: 12.5), from Chunbuk, Chunnam, Ch’ungbuk, Kyongki, and Kangwon F.E.S., respectively.
Distribution and population of plant parasitc nematodes were investigated using 70 soil and root samples in total collected from six locations in Gyeongbug and Gyeongnam provinces. Among nematodes identified, Meloidogyne spp. was the most prevalent with $91.4\%$ in frequency cf detection. Frequency of detection was $87.1\%$ for Tylenchus sp., $24.3\%$ for Hirschmanniella, $23.3\%$ for Aphelenchus sp., and $20\%$ for Aphelenchoides sp.. Meloidogyne spp. was most abundant from samples collected in Namji and the number of nematodes dectected was 2,104 per $300cm^3$ soil. The number of Meloidogyne spp. detected was 671 from Milyang, 401 from Samrangjin. The number of nematodes was 57 from Samrangjin for Tylenchus sp., 127 from Gupo for Pratylenchus, 26 for Aphelenchoides sp. and 34 for Criconemoides from Samrangjin. Population of Meloidogyne spp. was the highest in Namji and Milyang where pepper and cucumber or pepper and chinese cabbage was cultivated in multiple croppings, however, population of Pratylenchus spp., and Meloidogyne spp. was the highest in Samrangjin where strawberry was cultivated as a single crop. Population in Pratylenchus and Meloidogyne was the highest in Gupo where tomato and chinese cabbage were cultivated alternatively, however, population of nematodes was generally low in Seongju and Yucheon where watermelon-rice or pepper-rice were cultivated in sequence. Meloidogyne spp. and Pratylenchus spp. appear to be economically important nematode species in cropping by controlled horticulture. In this study, 15 species of plant parasitic nematodes were identified.
Nine species of plant parasitic nematodes, Aphelenchoides besseyi, Aphelenchus avenae, Criconemoides informis, Helicotylenchus dihystera, Meloidogyne arenaria, Meloidogyne hapla, Pratylenchus minyus and Tylenchus sp. Were found in peanut field in Korea. Chemicals used were; Telon C-17, Mocap 10G and Carbofuran 3G for control peanut parasitic nematodes. All chemicals reduced nematode populations but varied in effectiveness. Telon C-17 was especially effective against Meloidogyne hapla, the principal species on peanut and resulted in significant yield increased than the control. Plant height, number of branches and dry weight of peanut were increased over the nontreated control by chemical soil treatments.
In order to survey the kinds and distribution of tobacco parasitic nematodes, 51 soil samples were. collected from 14 associations under the office of Monopoly of Kyungbuk and Kyungnam province. 1, The plant parasitic nematodes were found $96.1\%$ in the whole sampled. 2. The propotion of infested field of each nematode genera, Tylenchus shown as dominant by $82.3\%$ and next Aphelenchus $72.5\%$, Tylenchorhynchus $58.8\%$, Meloidogyne$50.9\%$, Criconemoides $25.4\%$, Pratylenchus, Hirschmanniella $23.5\%$ in order. 3. The density of genera per localities were as follows Pratylenchus is most abundant in Youngdeog as 43 population, Tylenchorhynchus shown in Jinbo, Tylenhus in Yeongil, Meloidogyne in Kimcheon, Xiphinema in Euisung. 4. Eighteen species belonging to 16 different genera of 11 families were identified, 12 of them are new for Korea as tobacco parasitic nematodes; Aglenchus costatus, Aphelenchus avenae, Criconemoides informis, Ditylenchus dipsaci, Helicotylenchus dihystera Hirschmanniella imamuri, Meloidogyne incognita, Psilenchus hilarulus, Rotylenchus pini, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, Tylenchorhynchus nudus and Xiphinema americanum.
Experiments were carried out to control white-tip nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi Christie, during the period just before transplanting. The experimental results were summarized as fellows: 1: From a 12-hr to a 24-hr sled-soaking application into 500 times dilutions of Malathion $80\%$ Ec, Sumithion $50\%$ EC and Lebaycid $50\%$ EC were highly effective than other emulsifierble concentrations of chemicals. 2) The water surface application of PSP-204 $5\%$ G, Diazinon $3\%$ G, Nemagon $20\%$ G and Terracurr-P $5\%$ G were effective. 3: Root·dipping application of Sumithion $50\%$ Ec, Lebaycid $50\%$ Ec and Nemagon $80\%$ Ec were more effective chemicals than others.
Survey was conducted on the kinds and densities of pests associated with stored garlic collected from farms of major garlic production areas from 1994 to 1995 in Korea. Aceria tulipae, Rhizoglyphus sp., Ditylenchus dipsaci, and Tyrophagus putrescentiae were frequently detected with high densities and Tarsonemus bilobatus and Aphelenchus avenue showed relatively low detection rates and densities. Detection rate of A. tulipue was 38% in 1994, but the rate was 65% in 1995. Number of the mite ranged from 1 to 4,500 per scale. Detection rate of Rhizoglyphus sp. was 63% in 1994, but the rate was 13% in 1995 and average number of the mite ranged from 1 to 135 per scale in 1994. Garlics damaged by Rhizoglyphus sp. showed decaying symptom. T~rophagusp utrescentiae was detected from 22 farms among 32 farms surveyed in 1994 and from 21 farms among 39 farms surveyed in 1995. However, number of the mite on garlic scale was relatively lower than the other mites and its damages on stored garlic was not determined.

This study was performed to investigate the escape of pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, from two vector species (Monochamus alternatus and M. saltuarius) through oviposition and feeding behavior. First, we checked number of PWNs escaped from M. alternatus emerged from three different cases of pine logs. In case A, healthy pine trees were cut into logs and left in pine forest infected with PWN. In case B, healthy pine trees were cut into logs, left in large screen cage, and let them oviposited by M. alternatus emerged from pine trees infested with PWN. In case C, pine trees which were harboring M. alternatus were cut into logs, and PWN was inoculated artificially. The M. alternatus adults emerged from the above three cases of pine logs were checked in the next year to know how many PWN they were harboring in their bodies. The percentages of M. alternatus harboring PWN (18.3 and 15.6%, respectively) and number of nematodes per vector ($5,713.1{\pm}9,248.3$ and $2,034.1{\pm}4,746.8$ PWNs, respectively) in case A and B logs are similar to each other. However, the percentage and the number in case C (38.3% and $20,083.1{\pm}32,188.3$ PWNs) were higher than those of case A and B. Among 52 M. alternatus adults harboring PWN from all the three cases, 20 adults (38.5%) were harboring more than 5,000 PWNs per beetle. And these 20 adults were harboring 97.9% of the total PWNs in 52 adults. Second, we checked the daily escape of PWNs from M. alternatus and M. saltuarius collected at pine forest infested with PWN. The PWN escaped from their vector body for $34.9{\pm}12.4$ days for M. alternatus, and for $23.9{\pm}16.2$ days for M. saltuarius, reaching at peak escape during the 2nd week of emergence of the two vector species. A 44.5 and 47.2% to the total PWNs escaped from vector body within 2 weeks of vector emergence for M. alternatus and M. saltuarius, respectively. The number of PWNs escaped from each vector was $3,570.6{\pm}5,189.2$ and $1,556.2{\pm}1,710.3$ for M. alternatus and M. saltuarius, respectively.
