In this paper, a method of implementing a communication network in ship, which exploits a powerline-based legacy-line communication system (LLC), is presented. We develop an inductive coupling unit and a multi-interface device to connect a data communication terminal to the powerline. As a result of operation tests for the ship under working, the implemented LLC shows a transmission rate of at least 25.8 Mbps in the distance of 200 m away with 100% success rate. Thus, the system can be a useful alternative to implement a communication network in ship without additional channels. Being easy to be implemented and supporting various interfaces for data communication, the presented system will be very effective when a real-time monitoring system is launched in future digital ship.
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) area presents a complex traffic pattern due to ships entering or leaving the port to utilize port facilities, as well as ships passing through the coastal area. To ensure safe and efficient management of maritime traffic, VTS operators continuously monitor and control vessels in real time. However, during periods of high traffic congestion, the workload of VTS operators increases, which can result in delayed or inadequate VTS services. Therefore, it would be beneficial to predict traffic congestion and congested areas to enable more efficient traffic control. Currently, such prediction relies on the experience of VTS operators. In this paper, we defined vessel traffic congestion from the perspective of a VTS operator. We proposed a method to generate traffic networks using historical navigational data and predict traffic congestion and congested areas. Experiments were performed to compare prediction results with real maritime data (Daesan port VTS) and examine whether the proposed method could support VTS operators.

A monitoring system of collision risk among multiple ships is newly-designed in order to reduce human error and make vessel traffic control more effective. By using AIS data as ships' navigational information, an estimation algorithm of collision risk among multiple ships is newly-designed. To consider ships' course of now and future, collision risks of multiple ships can be calculated by using fuzzy algorithm. To test the performance of new algorithm, replay simulations are carried out on actual AIS data collected from VTS center of Ulsan harbor in Korea. The AIS data include 25 ships' information for two hours. In this paper, the features of newly-designed estimation algorithm of collision risk and the results of replay simulation are discussed.

Korean e-Navigation is a system that introduced to reduce maritime accidents. In order to reduce marine accidents, Korean e-Navigation provides the following services-"Vulnerable Vessel Monitoring", "Vulnerable Vessel support & monitoring", "Optimal safety route", "ENC Streaming for Small Vessel", "Tug & Barge Support", "Maritime Safety Information Providing". Each Service is a system separated into finctional units and integrated into Korean e-Navigation. Korean e-Navigation is introducing data middleware to integrate each service and the DDS(Data Distribution Service) is judged to be effective. Thus, this paper analyzed the characteristics of DDS middleware types suitable for each service of e-Navigation.
Effective interaction between navigation officer and automated navigation-support system is essential for ship-handling and safe navigation In this study, the functions of the SCMS(Ship Control and Management System) which was developed and implemented to support navigation officer's ship control and to guide safe navigation were described in terms of navigation officer's tasks(i.e., watchkeeping, positioning, and maneuvering), and the interactive relationship between navigation office and the system were analyzed in addition, the effectiveness of the system was evaluated in the scope of training efficiency and subjectively rated safety level.

The marine transport industry generally applies new technologies later than other transport industries, such as airways and railways. Vessels require efficient operation, and their performance and lifespan depend on the level of maintenance and management. Many studies have shown that corrective maintenance (CM) and time-based maintenance (TBM) have restrictions with respect to enabling efficient maintenance of workload and cost to improve operational efficiency. Predictive maintenance (PdM) is an advanced technology that allows monitoring the condition and performance of a target machine to predict its time of failure and helps maintain the key machinery in optimal working conditions at all times. This study presents the development of a marine predictive maintenance (MPdM; maritime predictive maintenance) method based on applying PdM to the marine environment. The MPdM scheme is designed by considering the special environment of the marine transport industry and the extreme marine conditions. Further, results of the study elaborates upon the concept of MPdM and its necessity to advancing marine transportation in the future.
As maritime traffic increases and ships get bigger and faster, the risk of maritime accident increases. According to the recent reports on maritime accidents, more than 80% of the maritime accidents occur due to navigational mistakes and/or human errors. Even though many kinds of navigation systems based on new technology have been developed to reduce maritime accidents, we need to research the method for expressing and providing information. The efficient navigation system should be able to display information simply and intuitively to make decision quickly and accurately. In this paper, we proposed augmented reality based navigation system which can be utilized in bridge of the ships and described the services for navigational safety.

Distress accidents occur annually by and failure of sea rescue and time delay lead to fatal accident. In the event of maritime distress, most of the equipments used for search and rescue are in responsible for the position of ships. An MOB equipment is a representative equipment for lifesaving and uses AIS communication method. However, the MOB equipment has problems of interference with existing vessel traffic process and it is difficult to apply because there is no proper certification standard. Therefore, this paper proposes a maritime search and rescue supporting system using smartphone. Utilizing the widely constructed IT infrastructure, it collects position information of the fishing boat and leisure ship using GPS embedded in the smartphone. Also the developed system supports to participate in the rescue by sending the information about the occurrence of the survivor in a certain area to the ship operator.

Information supporting system which is based on real-time prediction of currents to be applicable to the sea trial test of ship is developed. In the system, the spatial distribution of currents at specific time and the trends of variability of currents occurring at specific sites are also given as valuable information for sea trial test of ship. In addition, the system has a capability to connect with a GPS which provides information including speed loss of the ship caused by currents on the way of voyage. With information from the sea trial test, the system is also capable of delivering optimum time and pathways by considering calculated speed loss of ship at specific time and its pathway. Having information described as above, the real-time current prediction system supports and provides functions of not only running the test in an efficient way but also providing valuable information which is encouraged to be used during the test by installing at the ship.
