  • A field microplot(D 20cm, L 85cm) experiment filled with Bonryang sandy loam soil (Typic Udifluvents) was conducted to obtain quantitative information on the movement of applied nutrients under diffetent soil moisture regimes and ladino clover cultivation. Chloride moved rapidly with soil water. When soil moisture tension was maintained at loer than 0.2 bar most of the Cl appeared to move outside the microplot 4 month after the microplot installation. Regardless of soil moisture condition, Cl was not detected in the soil due to the fast movement of the Cl beyond the microplot after 5.5 months Although large amount of P and water were applied to the soil of high available P during the field experiment, movement of P was negligible and most of P remained in thc place where applied due to the low solubility of the fused and superphosphate. Phosphate in the soil extracted by Bray No.1 solution and taken up by plant increased with soil moisture. Under the condition of irrigation at 0.2 bar, plant took up 23% of the applied P, and 24% of the P was extracted by Bray NO.1 solution, while plant took up 14% and 13% of the P was turned out to be Bray No.1 P. at thc nonirrigated condition after final harvest.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the weed population as affected by repeated application of fertilizers for 15 years (nonfertilized, PK, NK, NPK, NPK+Compost, NPK+Straw and NPK+lime). Alopecurus aequalis authority did not grow at all without P application and lime reduced the population of A. aequalis. Total number of weeds were the largest at 5-10cm soil layer and increased by application of compost and straw. Monochoria vaginalis dominated in NPK+compost and NP plot. Scirpus hotarui dominated in NPK+straw. Both Eleocharis kuroguwai and Potamogeton distinctus dominated in nonfertilized plot. Numbers of M. vaginalis and S. hotarui were larger low pH 6 while that of E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus at pH 6 to pH 7. Incidence of M. vaginalis and S. hotorui was great at pH's lower than 6, while E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus favored pH's ranging from 6 to 7.

  • Bog bean (Menyanthes trifoliata L.) is an endangered species in Korea, inhabiting in montane wetlands. Its' habitats are decreasing due to artificial disturbances and climate change in Korea. Interspecies competitions determine the distribution of a species and it is important to examine the effects of companion species on the growth of a species. To reveal the effects of habitat substrate and companion species on the growth of bog bean, we compared the growth parameters of bog bean at three substrate conditions where plant communities were formed: water column, Sphagnum mat, and paddy soil. Bog bean had the highest relative coverage at Sphagnum mat condition and there are few species whose height were higher than it. In contrast, there were many species larger than bog bean at paddy soil condition. The maximum coverage of bog bean was the largest at water column condition, and the lowest at paddy soil condition. Our results indicate that the growth of bog bean was more restricted by interspecific competition at paddy soil condition than at Sphagnum mat condition. Those results suggest that bog bean avoid competitions by expansion of rhizome rather than elongation of its height. For conservation or creation of bog bean habitats, it is necessary to offer the environment where other species cannot survive well.

  • The goal of this study was to isolate wild yeasts from reed fields in the Seocheon-gun county in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Molecular analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the 26S rDNA of the yeasts isolated from soil samples was performed using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). In total, 20 yeast strains from 11 species were isolated from 20 different soil samples. Candida species were observed to be the most common yeasts. Of these 20 strains, Candida subhashii (6 strains), Candida tropicalis (3 strains), Candida boleticola MS008, and Lachancea thermotolerans (2 strains) were identified as alcohol-fermenting yeasts. Further, Bullera japonica YJ10-1, Candida subhashii J7-1, Kluyveromyces yarrowii YJ11-1, and Ustilago shanxiensis Y10-1 were newly recorded yeast strains in Korea, and therefore, their microbiological characteristics were investigated further. All of these unrecorded yeast strains had oval cells; only Candida subhashii J7-1 formed ascospores and pseudomycelia. Kluyveromyces yarrowii YJ11-1 grew in vitamin-free medium, and all of these strains, except Candida subhashii J7-1, grew in 5% NaCl-containing YPD broth.

  • This study was carried out to assess heavy metal pollution at 16 abandoned mining areas and to get basic data for phytoremediation. In most of surveyed area, there was no vegetation cover and soil reaction shows in low to moderate pH. Low CEC, low organic matter content were the general properties of these soils. Heavy metals content of these soils were exceed background level of unpolluted soil in Korea, especially Cu content was 2,634mg/kg at Jeil site, 3,415mg/kg Zn, 8.03mg/kg Cd at Yonhwa 2 site. This is far above tolerance limit In plant survey, very often observed plants were Pinus densiflora, and Rohinia psuedo-acacia in woody plant, Artemisia princeps, and Dianthus sinensis in herbs. Artemisia princeps had higher concentration of Zn, Cd and Dianthus sinensis had higher concentration than other plants. From the results, heavy metal concentration in plants and plant's ecotype properties, could be said that Artemisia princeps and Miscanthus sinensis have a potential of soil remediation plant. More studies are demanded to find the heavy metal tolerance species and to understand physiology property of tolerance plants, soil condition, climate etc., for successful soil remediation by plants.

  • Radio-tracer experiments on the Sr-90 absorption by rice and soybean from a sandy-loam soil of pH 6.35 treated with 5.2 and 31.2Bq Sr-90 per g-soil were carried out through pot cultivations. Sr-90 absorption rates of both crops increased till the mature stage when the rates were about 1.0%. Concentrations in their whole tops, however, decreased or changed little as they grew. Sr-90 concentrations in plant parts of both crops increased with the increase of those in soil. Soil-to-plant transfer coefficients of Sr-90 for rice and soybean at mature stages ranged, on the dry weight basis, from 0.07(unpolished seed) to 3.67(lean and from 0.86(seed) to 9.26(leaf), respectively. Only the unpolished rice seed showed a significant difference in the coefficient with 0.17 in 5.2Bq treatment and 0.07 in 31.2Bq treatment. Sr-90 retention rates of the upper 15cm soil after crop harvests were about 80% Sr-90 absorptions had no effect on the plant growth and yield of the crops.

  • This study was conducted to develop method of producing okra in the plastic house and the 11 cultivar of okra were planted in plastic house for selecting proper cultivar in Korea. As result of observing growth, commercial cultivar germinated better than wild collected. The germination rate in 'No 1', 'No 4' and 'No 5' were better than in 'No 2' and 'No 3'. The plant height of 'No. 4', which is one of wild collected, showed biggest plant height moreover 'Greensode'. The numbers of node, which could indicate to set fruit, showed 4.2~6.5 per plant in most cultivar and 'No 2' and 'No 5' could yield more than others. 'Greensode' was planted in plastic house for finding out suitable planting method. The seeds were soaked could germinate 100% and those were taken 8 days for germinating but control seeds needed 15 days to germinate. The yield of 'Greensode' which was planted in $45{\times}75cm$ with planted 3 and 4 per hill could best produce in plastic house.

  • In order to produce hemp with low cannabinoids and appropriate fiber yield, seeds of the IH3 (non drug type germplasm) and local variety (drug type cultivar) were mixed to 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 on base of seed weight ratio and cultivated for seed production. In the seed yield trial, the weight of 1000 grains were around 21 g, which was increased in proportion to the ratio of IH3 seeds but seed yield were 100 kg/10a, which were not significantly different by the seeds-mixing ratio. In fiber yield trials with seeds from seed yield trial, fiber yield ranged $193{\sim}198kg/10a$ which was not significantly different by the seeds mixing ratio but the content of THC(${\Delta}$-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) was lowered in proportion to the ratio of IH3 seeds. Variation of THC and CBD (Cannabidiol) level in the 150 plant cultivated with various seed mixing ratio reflected that the percentage of drug and intermediate type were decreased but non drug type were increased in proportion to the ratio of IH3 seeds.

  • An experiment was carried out to study the effects of Zn application on the rice plant of IR-667 and Jinheung varieties grown under the conditions of poor drainage and low available Zn. The results obtained were an follows; 1. The poor drained condition of the paddy field was more favorable for Zn utilization by the rice plants than the well drained condition. Also Zn application in the form of Zinc chloride $(ZnCl_2)$ seemed to significantly increased the rice yield of both IR-667 and Jinheung. 2. Zn content of IR-667 was much higher than that of Jinheung. The concentration of Zn in IR-667 rice plant treated by Zn fertilizer was about 200 ppm while that of control plot (not received Zn fertilizer) only 30 ppm. This result suggests that Zn application might improve the yield under the condition of poor drained soil when Zn concentration of IR-667 rice plant is around 30 ppm. 3. Absorption of Zn-65 by the rice plant was greater in the plants grown without Zn fertilizer than those with Zn fertilizer application, At harvest, the higher amount of Zn-65 was accumulated in the gram than in the straw. 4. Zn fertilization increased the grain yield in the soil of Paju, Dalsung, Chilg ok and Chungwon with low available Zn.

  • The gridded simulation of crop growth, which would be useful for shareholders and policy makers, often requires specialized computation tasks for preparation of weather input data and operation of a given crop model. Here we developed an automated system to allow for crop growth simulation over a region using the DSSAT (Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer) model. The system consists of modules implemented using R and shell script languages. One of the modules has a functionality to create weather input files in a plain text format for each cell. Another module written in R script was developed for GIS data processing and parallel computing. The other module that launches the crop model automatically was implemented using the shell script language. As a case study, the automated system was used to determine the maximum soybean yield for a given set of management options in Illinois state in the US. The AgMERRA dataset, which is reanalysis data for agricultural models, was used to prepare weather input files during 1981 - 2005. It took 7.38 hours to create 1,859 weather input files for one year of soybean growth simulation in Illinois using a single CPU core. In contrast, the processing time decreased considerably, e.g., 35 minutes, when 16 CPU cores were used. The automated system created a map of the maturity group and the planting date that resulted in the maximum yield in a raster data format. Our results indicated that the automated system for the DSSAT model would help spatial assessments of crop yield at a regional scale.
