  • The physical properties of horticultural substrate are important for optimal plant growth. The physical properties should be properly maintained during the crop growing season for producing higher yield. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the physical properties of different mixtures from various raw materials as horticultural substrates. The mixtures at the different ratios of peatmoss, perlite and vermiculite subjected to 10:0:0, 8:2:0, 6:4:0, 4:6:0, 2:8:0, 0:8:2, 0:10:0, 0:6:4, 0:4:6, 0:2:8, 8:0:2, 0:0:10, 6:0:4, 4:0:6, 2:0:8, 2:6:2, 2:4:4, 4:2:4, 4:4:2, 6:2:2 and 2:2:6 were prepared and analyzed according to two methods of the European Standardization (EN) and Rural Development Administration (RDA). The optimum range of physical properties of a specific horticultural substrate can be predicted using physical-property-triangle. This triangle can also be used to convert a physical property from the EN method to that from the RDA method. Results showed that the mixture at a ratio of > 60% peatmoss, in most cases, is in the range of optimum physical condition for plant growth. We conclude that the developed physical-property-triangle can be suitable to suggest the optimum ratios of horticultural substrates used in this study.

  • Bark is a general medium for potted Cymbidium in Korea, but it is difficult to shake off or eliminate the medium from the roots before exporting the potted plants. This working process can injure the roots and then deteriorate plant marketability. This study was carried out to select the optimum medium easier to eliminate from the roots instead of bark and the optimum amount of applied fertilizer to improve the plant growth. Cymbidium young plants 'Honey Hot' and 'Desert Look' were planted in pots with bark, cocochip, and peatmoss. The plants were treated with 2, 4, and 6 g of slow release fertilizer. The plant growth characteristics were investigated in the first and second years during production period of three years. The medium characteristics and mineral nutrient content of the leaves were also examined in the second year. In the first year, the plant growth of 'Desert Look' was improved in all peatmoss treatments more than bark. 'Honey Hot' showed the highest plant growth values in the bark treatment. In the second year, the plant growth of the two cultivars was improved in peatmoss. Cocochip treatments showed the lower plant growth values than bark and peatmoss in the first and second year. There was no significant difference among fertilizer amounts in all the media. The higher CEC values of peatmoss medium resulted to higher capacity to hold more nutrients than bark, and the nutrient retention of the peatmoss improved the plant growth. The higher K and Ca contents in the leaves would contribute to improve the plant growth. Consequently, it would be possible to use peatmoss instead of bark for Cymbidium young plants, but there must be always attention to appropriately water the medium and manage the moisture.

  • Soldier fly casts produced by eco-friendly treatment of food waste with American soldier fly was composting cast mixed food waste compost and soldier fly pupa. This study was conducted to evaluate a possibility of soldier fly casts (SFC) as soil amendment by investigating soil properties and zoysiagrass growth. Amendments were selected coco peat, compost and SFC and their ratio mixed with sand were non-amendment (NA), 7% coco peat(Coco), 7% compost (Comp), 3.5% SFC (1/2SFC) and 7% SFC. In soil properties, SFC was increased CEC than NA and T-N, Av-$P_2O_5$ and exchangeable K in soil than Coco. Compared with Coco and Comp, turf quality such as turf color index and chlorophyll index in SFC was higher and root length of zoysiagrass longer. Growth of shoot, runner and root in SFC was increase than that of Coco and Comp. These results indicated that 7% SFC applied as soil amendment was improved growth and quality of zoysiagrass by prompting soil productivity and nutrient availability in soil and root growth.

  • To investigate ecophysiological characteristics of plants species adapted to moor habitat, we selected 22 species plants and analyzed inorganic cations (K, Ca, Mg), heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn) and total nitrogen and phosphorus quantitatively. Moojechi moor indicated typical acidic and oligotrophic conditions with pH of 5.0∼5.6 (pH 4.3∼5.1 in soil) and EC of 15∼30μ S/cm, and contained very low contents of soil divalent cation such as Ca and Mg but high contents of heavy metals (esp. Al). With respect to inorganic cation contents, investigated plants species showed remarkable interspecific difference. Plant species belonging to J. effusus var. decipiens, M. japonica, I. globosa, M. sacchariflorus, R. mucronulatum, R. yedoense var. poukhanense, H. micrantha, D. rotundifolia showed very low contents of inorganic cation below 400 μ M/g DW, but plant species of C. palustris var. spontanea, L. sessilifolia, P. mandarinorum, C. lineare, S. austriaca sub. glabra, V. mandshurica, A. decursiva showed high cation contents in leaves. Especially, S. austriaca sub. glabra (Compositae) and V. mandshurica (Violaceae) showed pattern accumulating Ca and Mg with plant growth, but I. ensata var. spontanea (Iridaceae) and S. officinalis (Rosaceae) showed decreasing tendency. Meanwhile, most plant species showed low contents of soluble metal ions in leaves in spite of high heavy metal contents on soil, and indicated remarkable interspecific differences in the total contents and composition of heavy metals accumulated. Despite low contents of N and P on soil, most plant species indicated relatively high contents of N and P in leaves at the early stage of growth, and showed slowly decreasing pattern according to growth. Consequently, it seems that plant species inhabited on Moojechi moor cope with acidic-oligotrophic conditions, accumulating inorganic cations and nitrogen at the early growing stage and reutilizing them in the course of growth, and developing heavy metal excluding mechanism.

  • The concentrations of tocopherols and compositions of fatty acids during germination and maturation of soybean seeds were determined by HPLC and GC. In germination stages, when the length of seedling axis was about 10 cm, the contents of total tocopherols and lipids were the highest. At the early phase of pod filling on field condition, the concentration of ${\delta}-tocopherol$ in soybean seeds was the highest, but, in further pod filling, the content of ${\delta}-tocopherol$ decreased continuously, and ${\alpha}-$ and ${\gamma}-tocopherol$ increased. Accumulation of oil during pod filling seems to be determined at the beginning. There seem positive correlations between several tocopherol homologues and fatty acids.
