  • The development of microarray technology makes possible to analyse many thousands of genes simultaneously. While it is important to test each gene whether it shows changes in expression associated with a phenotype, human diseases are thought to occur through the interactions of multiple genes within a same functional cafe-gory. Recent research interests aims to directly test the behavior of sets of functionally related genes, instead of focusing on single genes. Gene set enrichment analysis(GSEA), significance analysis of microarray to gene-set analysis(SAM-GS) and parametric analysis of gene set enrichment(PAGE) have been applied widely as a tool for gene-set analyses. We describe their problems and propose an alternative method using a parametric analysis by adopting normal score transformation of gene expression values. Performance of the newly derived method is compared with previous methods on three real microarray datasets.

  • In this study, the bio-impedance of the human body is able to obtain a lot of information by monitoring the pathological and physiological conditions of clinical and biological tissues. The four electrode method system for biometrics measured the potential difference between two electrodes and the other two electrodes were used as electrodes for current flow. The newly developed dry gold electrode measured impedance from 1 Hz to 50 kHz and produced reproducible results. To verify the impedance measurement of the dry electrode, the pitting was performed using an equivalent circuit model of the bioelectrode skin, and the effectiveness was demonstrated through modeling. Fixed electrode types have a constant position of the electrodes attached during the measurement, so that a stable measurement can be obtained, thereby minimizing the error.

  • The purpose of this study was to ascertain and analyze environmental factors of subgenus Lycoctonum in Korea for conservation and management of rare high land plant species by GIS. We derived the habitat model of Lycoctonum from GPS coordination, habitat factors and digital topology maps. Suitable altitude fur the subgenus Lycoctonum is from 470m to 1320m, and northern slopes(between 15.5 and 36 degrees) are ideal for the Lycoctonum populations. In addition to altitude, slope and aspect, deciduous forest and approximation to water source were found as important factor. Using GIS and the Lycoctonum habitat model, we overlaid elevation, aspect, slope and land cover layers and analyzed buffer from the water source on two topology maps, Yang-Soo and Mock-Dong. After making prediction map for Lycoctonum habitat, we verified the existence of Lycoctonum populations on the predicted sites through field survey. Through this research, we're convinced that GIS software is powerful tool for plants conservation, such as finding unknown habitat or selecting alternative habitat.

  • Korea national arboretum has worked with the plant taxonomic society of Korea to make the first fully electronic floristic checklist in Korea. The result is an ever-expanding online plant name index containing scientifically authorative, up-to-date information on the approximately 7,000 taxa including cultivars. With 37 contributing taxonomists, KPNI is the largest collaborative research projects ever assembled in Korea. A comprehensive database model for the taxonomic data from literature and other sources is presented, which was devised for the Korea National Plant Index database project (KPNI). Gwangreung database model is based on an approach using entity-relationsip diagram. It encompasses taxa of all ranks, nothotaxa and hybrid formulae, cultivars, full synonymy, basionyms, Korean name, and other nomenclatural information. Ths paper presents an analysis of KPNI work processes and an overview how we are approaching the construction of Gwangreung databaese model. It can help the system engineers of other biological information systems to develop their database based on the accurate and integrative taxonomic database.

  • People observe a lot of events in our environment and we do not have any difficulty to perceive events including speech perception. Like perception of biological motion, two main theorists have debated on speech perception. The purpose of this review article is to briefly describe speech perception and compare these two theories of speech perception. Motor theorists claim that speech perception is special to human because we both produce and perceive articulatory events that are processed by innate neuromotor commands. However, direct perception theorists claim that speech perception is not different from nonspeech perception because we only need to detect information directly like all other kinds of event. It is important to grasp the fundamental idea of how human perceive articulatory events for the convergence on speech engineering. Thus, this basic review of speech perception is expected to be able to used for AI, voice recognition technology, speech recognition system, etc.

  • Ant Colony System(ACS) is a meta heuristic approach based on biology in order to solve combinatorial optimization problem. It is based on the tracing action of real ants which accumulate pheromone on the passed path and uses as communication medium. In order to search the optimal path, ACS requires to explore various edges. In existing ACS, the local updating rule assigns the same pheromone to visited edge. In this paper, our local updating rule gives the pheromone according to the total frequency of visits of the currently selected node in the previous iteration. I used the ACS algoritm using subpath for search. Our approach can have less local optima than existing ACS and find better solution by taking advantage of more informations during searching.

  • Hierarchical clustering analysis helps easily exploring massive microarray data and understanding biological phenomena with dendrogram. But, because hierarchical clustering algorithms only consider the absolute similarity, it is difficult to illustrate a relative dissimilarity, which consider not only the distance between a pair of clusters, but also how distant are they from the rest of the clusters. In this study, we introduced the relative hierarchical clustering method proposed by Mollineda and Vidal (2000) and compared hierarchical clustering method and relative hierarchical method using the simulated data and the real data in the various situations. The evaluation of the quality of two hierarchical methods was performed using percentage of incorrectly grouped points (PIGP), homogeneity and separation.

  • Microarray technology in biological science enables molecular level observations and analyses on the biological phenomina by allowing to measure the RNA expression profiles in cells. Microarray data analysis is applied in various purposes such as identifying significant genes which react to drug treatment, understanding the genome scale phenomina. In drug response experiments, the microarray-based gene expression analysis could provide meaningful information. It is sometimes needed to identify the genes which shows different expression behavior for treatment group and normal group each other. When the normal group shows the medium level expression, it is not easy to discriminate the group just by expression level comparison. This paper proposes a method which selects group-wise representative values for each gene and sets the value range of the groups in order to filter out the genes with specific pattern. It also shows some experiment results.

  • On top of several peaks of Seoraksan National Park. many extensive blockfields are found. After initial report was made in year 2000, further field work and analysis of satellite image have been made. Blockfields on top of mountain peaks exhibit evidence of chemical weathering including gnammas and grooves. Also, several lichen colonies larger than 80 cm in diameter have been found on the surface of many blocks. High resolution IKONOS image has been used to delineate the boundary of blockfields which are hard to access during the field trip. Blockfields of Mt. Seoraksan lack fine material necessary for age dating and clay mineral analysis because they experienced long period of wash and erosion during the Holocene. The ages of blockfields seem to be pre-Holocene on the basis of size of lichen colony and weathering pits.
