  • Cephalometric measureements have disadvantage of representing cranio-facial structures in two dimension only and therefore they pose limitations in describing three-dimentional structures of cranio-facial region. More interests have been put on the correlation between the two planes. This study evaluated correlations between facial type score, which allows effects on malocclusion, growth change prediction and establishment of treatment method and prognosis, and measurements from submentovertex view. Cephalometric view and submentovertex view were taken of skeletal Class I adults with optimal profile and correlations between them have been observed. Following results were obtained: 1. To learn about factors that influence average condylar angulation, FACE, INT-CO-ANG, MN-CORPUS, CON-RATIO, GON-RATIO, MN-RATIO were used as variables and underwent multiple regression analysis. As a result, the following equation was obtained : CON-AVE=.l73(FACE)-.322(INT-CO-ANG)+36.34(GON-RATIO) +.420(MN-CORPUS) (($R^2=.85451$) 2. The following equation was obtained concerning facial type score. FACE= .050(CON-ANG)+.023(INT-CO-ANG)-.075(MN-CORPUS)($R^2=.31547$) 3. Among the submentovertex measurements, MN-CORPUS, CON-RATIO, GON-RATIO, MN-RATIO showed close correlations. (P<0.05) 4. Average condylar angualtions were $23.37^{\circ}$ on the right and $20.71^{\circ}$ on left. There was a difference between the two. FACE : facial type soore. CON-ANG: mean value of condylar angulation. CON-AVE: mean value of Rt. Lt condylar angulation. INT-CO-ANG : angle between Rt. Lt condylar axis. MN-CORPUS : angle formed between RT. Lt gonion & pogonion. CON-RATIO: lntercondylar distance/mandibular body length. GON-RATIO : intergonion distanoe/mandibular body length. MN-RATIO: lntermylohyoid distance/mandibular body length. MX-RATIO: intermaxillary tuberosity distance/ANS-PNS distance.

  • Growth and development evaluation of patients with growth potential is of great importance for orthodontic treatment planning. Timing of orthodontic intervention greatly depends on one's developmental status, thus if there is a difference in skeletal maturation among malocclusion types different treatment timing should be applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare skeletal maturation among different malocclusion types. The samples used in this study was 38 Class I, 36 Class II and 33 ClassIII females aging from 8 to 10 years. Handwrist X-rays were taken with 6 month interval till 12-13 years of age. The results were as follows. 1. There was no skeletal maturity difference among different malocclusion types. 2. The hamular process of hamate was observed at $9.16{\pm}0.72$ years, pisiform bone at $9.13{\pm}0.71$ years and the ulnar sesamoid at $10.34{\pm}0.84$ years. 3. The timing of epiphyseal capping on the third finger was $10.96{\pm}0.80$ years for distal phalanx and $11.27{\pm}0.87$ years for middle phalanx, $11.12{\pm}0.85$ years for proximal phalanx of the first finger, $11.21{\pm}0.82$ years for radius and $11.62{\pm}0.85$ years for middle phalanx of the fifth finger. 4. The appearance of pisiform bone showed high correlation with appearance of hamular process of hamate(r=0.91) and ulnar sesamoid bone appearance showed high correlation with advanced ossification of hamular process(r=0.86). Timing of epiphyseal capping among different parts showed high correlation(r=0.80-0.90). 5. The shape of middle phalanx of the fifth finger showed the highest variability ($20.6\%$).

  • Improvements in jaw relationship through clockwise rotation of the mandible may be desirable in some Class III patients with short low facial height. The aim of this study was to examine the treatment effect of face mask for Class III malocclusion patients according to their low facial morphology. Methods: Class III patients in their pubertal growth period were divided into two groups (Group 1, high LFH; Group 2, low LFH) according to lower facial height (LFH) by Ricketts (norm, 47). treatment changes between groups after face mask treatment was compared not only for hard tissue but also for soft tissue. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups for the skeletal and soft tissues of the maxilla. There were no significant differences between the two groups for the skeletal posterior movement of the mandible, but posterior movement of the mandibular soft tissues in group 2 was larger than group 1. There were no significant differences between the two groups for the vertical hard tissue proportion changes of the mandible, but the vertical soft tissue proportion changes of the mandible in group 2 was larger than group 1. There was a significant correlation between the sagittal hard tissue and soft tissue changes of the maxilla and mandible, but there was no significant difference in the vertical changes. Conclusion: The clockwise rotation of the mandible occurred from use of the face mask, and posterior movement of soft tissues of the mandible was higher in Cl III patients with low LFH than with high LFH.

  • Objective: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the reproducibility and reliability of head posture obtained by registering outer canthus as a soft tissue landmark with the Outer Canthus Indicator (OCI). Methods: Twenty-one adults with normal facial morphology were enrolled in this study (mean age $27.5\;{\pm}\;1.72$ years). To register initial head posture, height of the outer canthus from the ear rod plane was measured using OCI. Head posture was reproduced by moving the head upwards and downwards until the outer canthus was in a straight line with the indicator set at a registered height. After the head posture is reproduced by two operators after two days, lateral photographs were taken. Computerized photometric analyses of the photographs were performed. Results: The head rotations around the transverse axis were $0.69\;{\pm}\;0.43^{\circ}$, $0.98\;{\pm}\;0.65^{\circ}$ from each of the two operators. Standard errors were $0.09^{\circ}$ and $0.14^{\circ}$ each, which were similar to results from past research findings. There were no significant differences between the data from the two operators (p > 0.05). There were no correlations between the head rotation around the horizontal and vertical axes (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The present study suggests that OCI-registered head posture may minimize errors from vertical head rotation in cephalometry and photometry.

  • Platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF) and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) may be the important regualtors of bone metabolism Exogenous PDGF is recognized to have a stimulating effect on bone resorption in organ culture but to stimulate the formation of new bone ultimately. LPS is known to be a stimulating agent on the osteoclastic activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects and the interaction of PDGF and LPS on periodontal ligament(PDL) cells which have important roles in bone remodeling. Cultured human periodontal ligament cells were tented with various concentration or PDGF and/or LPS. The cellular viability was measured by Microtitration(MTT) assay according to the lapse time of culture. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The viability of PDL cells was not different from the con01 in 0.1ng/ml of PDGF, but was significantly increased to be over the level of control in 1ng/ml of PDGF at the second day of culture, and in 10ng/m1 of PDGF at the second and the third day of culture. 2. The cellular viability was decreased in $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ or $5{\mu}g/ml$ LPS at the third day of culture. 3. Incubation with both 1ng/ml or 10ng/ml of PDGF and $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ of $5{\mu}g/ml$ of LPS resulted in the increased cellular viability at the third day, which was greater than LPS only treated group. It was greater than even the control group in 10ng/m1 of PDGF. From the above findings, we could summarize that the admixture of PDGF and LPS could not less increase the viability of the human periodontal ligament cells than PDGF only.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare arch dimensions and frequency distribution of arch forms between Korean and Japanese Class I, II, and III malocclusion groups. Methods: The sample consisted of 368 Korean cases (114 Class I, 119 Class II, and 135 Class III malocclusion) and 160 Japanese cases (60 Class I, 50 Class II, and 50 Class III malocclusion). The most facial portion of 13 proximal contact areas was digitized from photocopied images of the mandibular dental arches. Clinical bracket slot points were calculated for each tooth based on mandibular tooth thickness data. Four linear and two proportional measurements were taken. Measurements are statistically analyzed in each malocclusion group. The dental arches were classified into square, ovoid, and tapered forms to determine and compare the frequency distributions between the two ethnic groups. Results: The findings of this study showed that Japanese females in Class I and II groups had a statistically significant narrower mandibular dental arch width compared with the Japanese males, Korean males and Korean females. But in the Class III group, there was no significant difference in the mandibular dental arch size according to the two ethnic groups and genders. Conclusions: The majority of Koreans and Japanese in all the malocclusion groups exhibited square and ovoid arch forms. The most frequent arch forms found in Koreans was square but ovoid for Japanese.

  • The study on correlation between the parents' character of orthodontic patients and patients cooperation. Although dentists have excellent skill and technique, patients' cooperation is always demanded. Patients' poor cooperation results in poor treatment result. Cooperation between psycho-social state of parents and patient's cooperation was studied. The parent's psychosocial state is evaluated with scl-90-r. The cooperation is measured by appointment time compliance, appliance taking rate, breakage of appliance, and fee paying. Parents' psychosocial contents are somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic-anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, and additional item. Statistics was done by SPSS WINDOW version 12.0 program. The result showed no correlation between patients' cooperation and their parents' psychosocial state. There is no correlation between father's psychosocial state and patients' cooperation except psychoticism. There is no correlation between mother's psychosocial state and patients' cooperation. However, there was correlation among cooperation variables: appointment time compliance, appliance taking rate, breakage of appliance, cost paying. Appliance taking rate and cost paying showed positive correlation. Our findings suggest that patients' cooperation does not followed their parents' pychosocial state. Other combined factors should be considered like pychosocial state of patient and doctor-patient relationship.

  • A few years ago, a proposal was made to change the dosimetry from the air kerma-based reference dosimetry to the absorbed dose-based reference dosimetry for all radiotherapy beams of ionizing radiation to improve the accuracy of dosimetry. Here, we present a dosimetry study in which the two most widespread absorbed dosebased protocols (IAEA TRS398 and AAPM TG51) were compared with an air kermabased protocol (IAEA TRS-277) by measuring the absorbed dose in the same reference depth. Measurements were performed in three clinical electron beam energies using a PTW 30002 cylindrical chamber, and Markus and Roos planeparallel chambers. $^{60}$ Co calibration factors were obtained from the KFDA. The absorbed dose differences between the air kermabased and absorbed dosebased protocols were within 2.0% for all chambers in all beams. The results thus show that the obtained absolute dose values will be not significantly altered by changing from the air kermabased dosimetry to the absorbed dosebased dosimetry. It was also shown that absorbed dose values between the absorbed dosebased protocols agreed by deviations of less than 0.5% for a cylindrical chamber and less than 0.7% for planeparallel chambers using crosscalibration factors. Although the use of a cylindrical chamber and planeparallel chambers resulted in a difference of less than 2% for all situations investigated here, to reduce errors, the planeparallel chambers are recommended for electron energies in which the use of cylindrical chamber is not permitted in each protocol.
