Discrete Element Method (DEM) Analysis of Soil Plug Formation in Impact-Driven Open-ended Piles (이산요소해석법을 활용한 개단말뚝의 관내토 거동 분석)

  • This study used the discrete element method (DEM) to model the driving process of open-ended piles and investigate the behavior of soil plug during pile penetration. The developed DEM model was verified by comparing model pile test results and numerical analysis, particularly using a contact model considering rolling resistance between soil particles. The study successfully simulated soil compression inside the pile by adjusting the relative density and penetration velocity, and it was confirmed that the soil plug tended to be more compressed as the initial penetration velocity decreased. Soil plug length measurements, plug length ratio, and incremental filling ratio were analyzed and validated against experimental results. The developed DEM model aims to reduce trial and error in further studies by detailing the modeling and verification process.

Finite Element Analysis of Partially Saturated Soil Considering Pore-air Pressure (간극공기압을 고려하는 불포화토의 유한요소해석)

  • A model of solid-water-air coupling in triphasic mixture is compared to that of solid-water coupling in biphasic mixture with an application to partially saturated soils. Based on thermodynamics, the mathematical framework governing the behavior of a partially saturated soil is derived by using balance equations, and numerical implementation through drainage experiment of a sand column is carried out to validate the obtained formulations. The role of the air phase in the hydro-mechanical behavior of triphasic mixture can be analyzed from the interaction among phases and from the solid skeleton's constitutive behavior, and the three-phase model found applications in geotechnical engineering problems, such as $CO_2$ sequestration and air storage in an aquifer.

  • Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.

High-Altitude Environment Simulation of Space Launch Vehicle Including a Thruster Module (추력기 모듈을 포함한 우주발사체 고공환경모사)

  • In this work, the high-altitude environment simulation study was carried out at an altitude of 65 km exceeding Mach number of 6 after the launch of Korean Space Launch Vehicle using a shock tunnel. To minimize the flow disturbance due to the strut support of test model as much as possible, a few different types of strut configurations were considered. Using the configuration with minimum disturbance, the high-altitude environment simulation experiment including a propulsion system with a single-plume, was conducted. From the thruster test through flow visualization, not only a shockwave pattern, but a general flow-field pattern from the mutual interaction between the exhaust plume and the free-stream undisturbed flow, was experimentally observed. The comparison with the computation fluid dynamic(CFD) results, showed a good agreement in the forebody whereas in the afterbody and the nozzle the disagreement was about ${\pm}7%$ due to unwanted shockwave formation emanated from the nozzle-exit.

  • Critical speed of high thrust liquid rocket engine turbopump is obtained through a rotordynamic analysis and a unloaded turbopump test is peformed for validation of the numerical model. The first critical speed predicted by the numerical analysis is correlated well with the test result for the bearing unloaded rotor condition only considering mass unbalance load. Using the previous rotordynamic model, critical speed variation is estimated as a function of varied bearing stiffness due to pump and turbine radial loads with relative angle difference. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the relative angle difference of pump and turbine radial loads greatly affects the critical speed. However, additional axial load reduces the effect derived from the relative angle difference of radial loads.

Study on the increases in rice yield (수도다수확재배시험)

  • 1. This experiment was conducted with paddy rice in replicated field plot of clay load in Chung Puk College. This experiment has been intended to find out the suitable polt for increasing the yield of rice plant among the 36 plots which consist of 3 factors; deep plowing, heavy fertilizer and thick planting. 2 According to the standard and the heavy fertilizer applications, spikes and grains per phyung have been compared. It has been find out that the higher yield can be obtain in such plots as these; (1) the plot with standard fertilizer application, 15cm plowing depth and 400 hill per phyung, (2) the plot with two times as much fertilizer application, 30 cm plowing depth and 300 hills per phyung, (3) the plot with three times as much fertilizer application, 30cm plowing depth and 300 hills, or 45cm plowing depth and 400hills per phyung. 3. In the yield of brown rice, there has been significant difference in each main factor: hills per phyung, the plowing depth and the amount of fertilizer, and in the first order interaction; depthxfertilizer, depthxhills and hillsxfertilizer, and in the 2nd order interaction; depthx hillsxfertilizer. 4. In the plots with 30cm plowing depth, thick, planting of 200∼300 hills per phyung and two times as much fertilizer, the yield of rice has been superior to others.

Evaluation of the Seismic Stability of Fill Dam by Shaking Table Tests (진동대 시험을 통한 Fill Dam의 내진 안정성 평가)

  • In order to understand evaluation of the seismic stability of a fill dam, we made chambers of 1:100, 1:70, and 1:50 (the ratio of the miniature), considering the law of similarity based on drawings of three representative cross sections. And we measured an increase in acceleration, excess pore water pressure, and vertical/horizontal displacement after applying Hachinohe wave (long period), Ofunato wave (short period), and artificial wave, complying with the domestic standards, in order to evaluate the stability and interaction between the ground, the structure, and fluids based on the measurements. As a result, we could observe that displacement of the target cross section was relatively small compared to the allowed level of 30 cm, ensuring proper stability for an earthquake. Regarding the acceleration measurements, the increase rate was 20% for Hachinohe wave and Ofunato wave but 30% for the artificial wave. With respect to the excess pore water pressure, it was lower than 1 (which is the permissible ratio for liquefaction) ensuring proper stability as well.

Development of Dynamic Balancing Techniques of a Rotor System Using Genetic Algorithm (유전자 알고리즘을 적용한 로터 시스템의 동적 밸런싱 기법 개발)

  • The dynamic balancing of a rotor system is needed to alleviate the imbalances originating from various sources encountered during blade manufacturing processes and environmental factors. This work aims at developing a comprehensive analysis system which consists of cumulative module of test D/B and selection of optimal control parameters. This system can be used for the dynamic balancing of helicopter rotors based on tracking results from the whirl tower test. For simplicity of the analysis, a linear relation is assumed between the balancing input parameters and the blade track responses leading to influence coefficients and thereby the rotor system identification is made. In addition, the balancing parameters of the individual blades are sought using the genetic algorithm and the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in comparison with the test results.

Pipe Stiffness Prediction of GRP Flexible Pipe (GRP 연성관의 관강성 예측)

  • In this paper, we present the load-deflection behavior of GRP pipes. GRP buried pipes are widely used in construction in the advantage of their superior mechanical and physical characteristics such as high chemical resistance, high corrosion resistance, right weight, smooth surface of the pipe, and cost effectiveness from soil-structure interaction. To design flexible pipes to be buried underground, it should be based on the ASTM D2412(2010). When applying ASTM D 2412(2010) to the design, pipe stiffness(PS) must be predetermined by the parallel-plate test which requires tedious and laborious working process. To overcome such problems, the finite element simulations for finding the load-deflection behavior of the GRP flexible pipes is installed at UTM testing machine. In the finite element simulations, basic data, such as the modulus of elasticity of the material and cross-sectional dimension, is used. From the investigation, we found that the difference between experimental result and analytical prediction is less than 15% when the pipe deflected 3% and 5% of its vertical diameter although the pipe material is not uniform across the cross-section.

Antenna Gain Measurement in Time Domain (시간 영역에서 안테나 이득 측정 연구)

  • There are several antenna calibration methods, so-called 3-Antenna Method, Standard Site Method, and Standard Antenna Method which measure the antenna gains or antenna factors. These methods yield the free space or quasi free space antenna gains in only the frequency domain. In this paper, an antenna calibration method using the time domain in the open area test site is discussed. The reflected waves due to the ground are traced in the time domain. After they are removed by the time gating function of network analyzer, the free space transmission coefficient $S_{21}$ is extracted. Such a way is applied to the broad band horn antenna ranging 1 GHz to 18 GHz, and the free space gains are obtained by Friis transmission equation. The method is checked by Standard Site Method in open area test site. The results show comparatively good agreement except for 18 GHz.
