Comparisons of Foliar Nutrient Concentrations and Soil Nutrient Stocks Between Restoration Areas and Adjacent Red Pine Stands in Opencast Kaolinite Mines in Sancheong-gun (산청군 고령토 광산 복원지와 인접 소나무 임분의 토양양분 저장량 및 잎 양분 농도 비교)

  • We performed this study to determine the foliar nutrient concentration and the nutrient stocks of restoration areas and adjacent Pinus densiflora S. et. Z. (red pine) stands in opencast kaolinite mines in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, southern Korea. We chose six sites to determine foliage nutrient concentrations and the nutrient stocks of soils (0-10 cm depth). The dominant vegetation planted in restoration areas comprised Quercus acutissima Carruth., P. koraiensis S. et. Z., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don. Invading vegetation in the restoration areas comprised Alnus incana (L.) Medik., Robinia pseudoacacia L., and Lespedeza spp., among others. The carbon and nitrogen stocks at 10 cm soil depth were significantly higher in the red pine stands than those in the restoration areas, whereas those of phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium were not significantly different between the two areas. However, calcium stocks were significantly higher in the restoration areas than in the red pine stands. Nitrogen concentration in foliage was higher in L. cuneata (20.28 mg N g-1) than that in F. arundinacea (5.67 mg N g-1), whereas potassium concentration was twice as high in F. arundinacea (18.8 mg K g-1) as that in L. cuneata (9.07 mg K g-1). Foliar nitrogen concentrations in invasive vegetation such as A. incana, R. pseudoacacia, and Lespedeza spp. were twice or four times higher than those of Q. acutissima and P. koraiensis. Our results indicate the development of suitable vegetation and soil amendment treatments to improve poor soil environmental conditions in restoration areas are necessary following opencast kaolinite mining.

  • Trametes versicolor(CV5) selected as a white-rot fungus with strong lignin degrading activity, in the previous paper, was investigated on a properties of degradation of wood lignin. Lignins of hardwoods, especially oak(Querous acutissima carruth) an paulownia (Paulownia coreana Uyeki) were considerably delignified by the CV5, however, softwoods used in this experiment were not delignified. Bavendamm's reaction was positive with several phenols on agar plates for the confirmation of a phenoloxidase secreted Through the morphologies of decayed wood chip observed with the aid of scanning electron microscopy, it was found that the hypha of CV5 penetrated the ray cells and vessels caused separation of the wood cellulose.

Life cycle of Kunugia yamadai Nagano (Lepidoptera, Lasiocampidae) in Korea (도토리나방(나비목, 솔나방과)의 생활사)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the life cycle of Kunugia yamadai Nagano attacking Qriercrrs spp. in Chungju area, Korea during 1987-1989. The moth had one generation a year. Host plants of the species were Quercus acutissima, Q. serrata, Q. aliena, and Castanea crenata. And Q. dentata T., and Q variahilis B. were newly recognized as host plants of the insect. Young larvae were hatched from the overwintered eggs and fed on the leaves from late April to early August which took ahout 3 months. In mid-August, the fully grown larva made a rough cocoon and pupated at the ground debris or dense grass. The moths emerged from September to late October with a peak around mid-October. Female oviposited 121 eggs on average mostly on the bark of host plants at 131 cm ahove the ground.

The Growth Characteristic of the Main Afforestation Species Using the Change of the Annual Ring in Uiseong Area (연륜 변화를 이용한 의성지역 주요 조림수종의 생장특성)

  • The climate of the Uisong Area is wet in the heat of summer and cold and dry in winter, The climate is highly consistent. The typical forest soil of the Uisong Area has an acidity of pH 4.5-5.6. The thickness of soil A layers is thin to an average of 10-20 cm and is a typical brown forest soil type. The growth characteristic of this climate and soil environment is as follows. In the case of Larix leptolepis, it takes 5-9 years to reach 6 cm diameter, The annual growth rate falls off greatly at an age of 17-19 years. The change of annual rings is more apparent on the north slopes compared with the east and northeast slopes. Pinus rigida takes 7-9 years to reach a 6 cm diameter. Annual growth rates of Pinus rigida fall greatly when age reaches 19 years. The change of annual ring growth of Pinus rigida was most apparent in the west and northeast slopes compared with the south and east slopes. In the case of Pinus koraiensis, the change of the annual ring width according to the characteristics of the slope is not important. Pinus koraiensis takes 6 yearsto reach the 6cm diameter, and annual growth rate fell off at age 19 years. In the case of Quercus acutissima, the growth of the valley trees is more stable than for trees grown at the mountain base. Annual growth rate of Quercus autissima fell off 19 years after planting. Ring growth of Robinia pseudo-acasia on northeast slopes appears much like that on northwest slopes. In conclusion, the main silviculture species reaches a 6 cm diameter in 5-9 years of growth, and the annual growth rate begins to fall between years 13 and 19 in the Uisong Area.

Changes of Photosynthetic Pigment Contents and SOD Activity in the Leaves of Four Tree Species Exposed to SO2 (SO2 노출된 4개 수종의 엽내 광색소 함량 및 SOD 활성 변화)

  • This study was conducted to compare physiological responses of Pinus densiflora, Populus ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa, Quercus acutissima and Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus exposed to SO$_2$, by measuring photosynthetic pigment contents and SOD activity. Four woody plants were exposed to relatively high SO$_2$ concentration (500 ppb, 800 ppb) for 8h day$^{-1}$ for 7 days in a chamber. Photosynthetic pigment contents in the leaves of four species decreased with increase of SO$_2$ concentration; also chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total carotenoid content were significantly different among tree species and treatments. The ratio of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a of E. sessiliflorus and Q. acutissima increased for 500 ppb treatment but decreased at 800 ppb. This result showed that chlorophyll a was destroyed by 500 ppb SO$_2$ and chlorophyll b by 800 ppb SO$_2$. Therefore, the sensitivity of chlorophyll a to SO$_2$ may be higher than that of chlorophyll b. SOD activity differed significantly between species and treatments. SOD activity of E. sessiliflorus and Q. acutissima increased at 500 ppb but decreased at 800 ppb, but P. densiflora and P ${\times}$tomentiglandulosa maintained high SOD activity at both 500 ppb and 800 ppb. Based on the photosynthetic pigment contents and SOD activity in the leaves of four tree species, the tolerance of P. ${\times}$ tomentiglandulosa to SO$_2$ was the highest of four tree species.

Decay Rate and Nutrients Dynamics during Decomposition of Oak Branches (상수리나무 가지의 분해 및 분해과정에 따른 영양염류 변화)

  • Decay rate and nutrient dynamics during decomposition of oak (Quercus acutissima) branches were investigated for 33-months in Kongju, Korea. After 33-months, remaining weight of B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 44.5%, 58.5% and 55.37%, respectively. Decomposition constant (k) for B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 0.294/yr, 0.195/yr, 0.215/yr, respectively. N concentration in decomposing oak branches increased in all diameter classes. After 33-months, remaining N in B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 101.2%, 91.9%, 104.4%, respectively. P concentration in decomposing oak branches increased in B₁ and B₂, and there was no immobilization period. After 33-months, remaining P in B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 57.2%, 74.4%, 53.9%, respectively. K concentration in decomposing oak branches decreased significantly. Remaining K in B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 7.7%, 17.1% and 17.2%, respectively, which was significantly lower than other nutrients. Ca concentration in decomposing oak branches increased in B₂ and B₃. After 33-months, remaining Ca in B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 58.5%, 47.8% and 75.2%, respectively. Initial concentration of Mg in oak branch was higher in smaller diameter class. After 33-months, remaining Mg in B₁, B₂ and B₃ was 44.3%, 57.9% and 47.7%, respectively.

Effect of Fertilization on Litterfall Amounts in a Quercus acutissima stand (시비가 상수리나무 임분의 낙엽낙지량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate litterfall amounts in a 28-year old Quercus acutissima stand at various levels of fertilization. The levels of fertilization were control, 3:4:1 (100 kg N/ha, 130 kg P/ha, 33 kg K/ha), 3:8:1, 3:4:2, 6:4:1, and 2:2:1, respectively. Fertilizers were applied for 3 years. Litterfall amounts following 3-year fertilization were significantly different among various levels of fertilization. Leaf litter was significantly higher (P<0.05) in 3:4:1 (4,015 kg/ha/yr) than in 3:8:1 treatments (2,874 kg/ha/yr), whereas other treatments showed no significant differences (P>0.05). Total litterfall amounts throughout the study period were 4,206 kg/ha/yr in 3:8:1, 4,992 kg/ha/yr in 2:2:1, 5,372 kg/ha/yr in 6:4:1, 5,456 kg/ha/yr in control, 5,840 kg/ha/yr in 3:4:1 and 6,015 kg/ha/yr in 3:4:2 treatments, respectively. Proportion of leaf litter was more than 66% of total litterfall in 3:4:1, 6:4:1, and 3:8:1 treatments compared with 61% in the control. These results indicated that litterfall amounts in a Q. accutissma stand were affected by various levels of fertilization.

Inhibitory effect of Korean mistletoes on the oxidative DNA damage (한국산 겨우살이의 산화적 DNA 손상 억제작용)

  • Korean mistletoes extracts were investigated for in vitro antioxidation activity, with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine(DPPH), and an inhibitory effect on oxidative DNA damage by using comet assay. The Korean mistletoes were 4 different kinds classified by their host plants (Korean Viscum sp. in Quercus acutissima Carr., Korean Viscum sp. in Castanea crenata, Korean Viscum sp. in Betula platyphylla, and Korean Viscum sp. in Salix koreensis). The samples were extracted with ethanol, and fractonationed with n-butanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, n-hexane, and second distilled water. Among them, ethyl acetate fraction from Korean Viscum sp. in Betula platyphylla showed the strongest activities to electron donating ability on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) and the protective effect on oxidative DNA damage.

Effects of Elevated CO2 Concentration on Leaf Phenology of Quercus acutissima (이산화탄소 농도 증가가 상수리나무 잎의 계절현상에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of elevated $CO_2$ on leaf phenology of Quercus acutissima were examined using open-top chambers, which had ambient and elevated $CO_2$ concentrations (ambient ${\times}1.4$, ambient ${\times}1.8$). To analyze the effect of chamber, non-treatment block was established near outside of the chambers. In 2013, budburst, leaf unfolding, coloring, and shedding were surveyed, and spring phenology was surveyed in 2014. Thermal sum (base temperature $+5^{\circ}C$) of each phenological event occurred was recorded. In addition, bud samples were collected and analyzed for carbohydrate contents in March 2014. Elevated $CO_2$ concentration advanced budburst and leaf unfolding, and delayed shedding in 2013. However, in 2014, the temperature of the spring season was high, and there was no significant effect of elevated $CO_2$ concentration on spring phenology. Carbohydrates content, such as starch, total non-structural carbohydrate and total soluble sugar, were significantly increased in response to elevated $CO_2$ concentration. It has been proposed that elevated $CO_2$ concentration could extend the growing season of temperate species with increased possibility of frost damage due to early bud opening and leaf unfolding. However, our analysis showed that the increased carbohydrate concentration in bud under elevated $CO_2$ would reduce the possibility of early spring frost damage by acting as cryoprotectant.

Forest Vegetation Analysis of Gabhasan and Woosanbong in Daejeon, Korea (대전 갑하산과 우산봉의 산림식생 분석)

  • This study was carried out to analyze forest vegetation of Gabhasan and Woosanbong in Daejeon, Employing the releve method of TWINSPAN, 62 plots were sampled from June 2001 to September 2001. Field survey carried out to examine importance value, to do diameter of breast height(DBH) measurement, and to analyze the Ordination. The Forest vegetation was classified into four communities: Quercus mongolica community, Pinus densiflora community, Quercus variabilis community, Quercus acutissima community. The importance value of Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata and Styrax japonica were high. According to DBH analysis, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis dominate currently, however, importance value of Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata, Prunus sargentii would increase in the future. The result of ordination analysis, showed that Quercus mongolica community was located in high altitude and steep area, Pinus densiflora community was located in comparatively high altitude and medium slope area, Quercus variabilis community was located in low altitude and gentle slope area and Quercus acutissima community was located in the lowest altitude and relatively gentle slope area.
