  • Rett syndrome is a progressive neurological disorder that occurs exclusively in females. The syndrome is characterized by regression of language, motor development, and stereotypic hand movement. Autistic behavior, breathing irregularities, gait dyspraxia, scoliosis, and seizure are also accompanied. The cause of Rett syndrome is unknown, however, it is believed that the X-chromosome might playa significant role in the development of the syndrome. Patients with this syndrome have unusual oral and/or digital habits such as abnormal chewing pattern, bruxism, hypersalivation, micrognathia, high vaulted palate, tongue protrusion with lower posture of tongue, hand biting, digit-hand sucking. Dentists who are aware of distinct manifestations of Rett syndrome will be able to aid in early diagnosis and treatment of the syndrome. Prior to dental treatment for a patient with the Rett syndrome under sedation or general anesthesia, one should assess the degree of hypersalivation, apnea, severity of autism, expected life span. Early recognition of the syndrome and also dental treatment with established strict preventive guidelines for patients with the Rett syndrome may obviate the necessity of sedation or general anesthesia. Two cases with the Rett syndome were reported. Both patients had most of the above mentioned typical manifestations of the syndrome. Dental treatment for the case 1(8-year-old) including caries control, stainless steel crown, sealant application was performed under general anesthesia. The case 2 could not be undergone the dental treatment due to poor general conditions.

  • Annual reproductive cycle of the file fish, Thamnaconus modestus (Gunther), was histologically investigated. Samples were collected monthly in the coastal waters of Chungmun, south of Cheju Island, Korea from July 1997 to June 1999. In males and females of T. modestus GSI values reached the maximum in June and May, respectively. Reproductive cycle could be divided into the following successive stages: in females, growing stage (March to April), mature stage (April to May), spawning stage (May to June), degenerative and resting stage (July to February), and in males, growing stage (January to March), mature stage (April to May), spent stage (May to June), degenerative and resting stage (July to December), respectively. To clarify the spawning cycle of female in T. modestus, some were examined, that is, the weekly changes of GSI, detail developmental stages in the ovary and the weekly changes of sex steroid hormones ($E_2$ and T) levels in plasma during the spawning period. Throughout histological observation of the ovary during the spawning period, T. modestus belonged to an asynchronous and multiple spawner. Changes of plasma $E_2$ and T levels were similar to the changes of GSI and ovary maturity.

  • Because of the reason that the meningioma is enhanced lately, we started the study to maximally enhance the meningioma. we were to know the relation between meningioma and vessels in the skull and compared 3D CT angiography with the conventional angiography. we got the data from 6 patients performed by both 3D CT angiography and there were 5 cases in sphenoidal ridge and 1 case parasagittal sinus. Injecting the contrast media at 3 ml/sec, 120 ml and then the CT number reached 100, we started the study using the medical system Program(smart prep). The scan parameters were HS-Mode(1.25 mm / 7.5 mm) right after being injected all and reconstructed with 0.5 mm interval. We compared the study with the conventional angiography after reconstructing the images required by using 3D-Med software Program(Rapidia). Seeing the consequences, the maximum enhancing time in the menigioma is about 120~180 seconds after injecting the contrast media and we distinguished the relation between vessels and tumors at the time and 1 case showed us the aneurysm with a tumor clearly at the time too. It was very helpful to the operation that the 3D images required by injecting the contrast media to the patients with meningioma distingushed between tumors and vessels dimensionally.

  • In the Cluster-Based Routing Protocol (CBRP) a cluster header in each cluster should be elected. The cluster headers consume energy much more than other nodes because they manage and operate all of mobile nodes in their cluster. The traditional CBRP elects a cluster header without considering the remaining electric energy of each node. So, there exists problems that the cluster header has short average lifetime, and another cluster header should be elected again frequently. In this paper, we propose the improved protocol which prolongs the lifetime of the cluster header, decreases of header re-elected problem, decreases of header re-elected problem and enhances the stability of the path. In order to achieve this, when a cluster header is elected in a cluster, the remaining electric energies of all the nodes are compared with one another, and the node with the highest energy is elected as the cluster header. Also, the node with the second highest energy is elected as the second header. If the elected cluster header is unable to perform the role of the cluster header because the remaining energy level goes low, it sends a beacon message to neighbor member nodes and the second header will serve as the cluster header.

  • Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures at the ends of chromosomes consisting of tandem repeat sequences of . (TTAGGG)n. Telomeres serve as guardians of the genome, protect individual chromosomes within the nucleus, and help in meiotic pairing of homologous chromosomes. To investigate the telomere distributions of cattle and pig chromosomes, fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) was carried out on metaphase spreads of in vitro fibroblast cultures from Holstein and Landrace using a human telomeric DNA repeat probe. Results indicate that the distinct double spots on both ends of chromosomes of cattle and pigs were observed. In cattle, there was a random variation in the intensity of telomere signals among chromosomes. In pigs, an interstitial telomeric signal was observed on the chromosome 6q1 of all the cells examined. According to quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization(Q-FISH) analysis, some chromosomes had consistently much more telorneres at one end of chromosomes. In general, both species had consistently much more telomeres at q-end than p-end on most of chromosomes. The relative amount of telomeres on bovine chromosomes was higher than that on pig chromosomes. In additions, Y chromosome had the highest relative amount of telorneres in cattle and pigs.

  • This paper proposes a method to improve the detectable distance by reducing noise to perform a signal processing technique on the received signals. To increase the radar detection range, the noise component of the received signal has to be reduced. The proposed method reduces the noise component by employing two methods. First, the radar signals received with multiple pulses are accumulated. As the number of additions increases, the noise component gradually decreases due to noise randomness. On the other hand, the signal term gradually increases and thus signal to noise ratio increases. Secondly, after converting the accumulated signal into the frequency spectrum, a Least Mean Square (LMS) filter is applied. In the case of the radar received signal, desired signal exists in a specific part and most of the rest is a noise. Therefore, if the LMS filter is applied in the time domain, the noise increases. To prevent this, the LMS filter is applied after converting the received signal into the entire frequency spectrum. The LMS filter output is then transformed into the time domain and then range estimation algorithm is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the noise component by about 25 dB. The experiment was conducted by comparing the proposed results with the conventional results of the radars held by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute for the international space station.

  • The Jeongdori windbreak forests of Wando island, located between the sea and the land, are very important as ecological succession areas that protect cultivated lands and fishing villages. Among the Jeongdori windbreak forests, the rocky seashore areas are occupied by Sageretia theezans mantle community, and their inner sections by sub-tree layers such as Ligustrum japonicum and Ligustrum obtusifolium. More specifically, the inner sections of the rocky seashore areas were found to be the habitat of Ligustrum japonicum-Quercus variabilis community, Ligustrum jarponicum-Viburnum erosum community, Ligustrum japonicum-Cinnamomum japonicum community, Cinnamomum japonicum-Carpinus tschonoskii community, and Pinus densiflora-Viburnum erosum community. The average height of tree layers of the Jeongdori windbreak forests is 10.3m, and the average diameter at breath height are 30.3cm. Though the windbreak forests was artificially made, it is now virtually natural forest and deserves protection for ecological reasons. Designated as a scenic spot 3, it is always in the danger of being damaged by frequent tourist visits. So the Jeongdori windbreak forest needs to be continuous maintenance and management by the National Park Service. Considering of the precious cultural treasures of the famous pebble stones covering Gugyedeung and the naturality of the Jeongdori windbreak forests, the Jeongdori windbreak forests as a scenic spot have to designated as the national monument in future and will preserve by the Cultural Properties Administration.

  • The stability of diverse cellular proteins in eukaryotes is regulated via ubiquitination. Moreover, E3 ligase plays a crucial role in determining substrate specificity and transfers ubiquitins into the substrates during the ubiquitination process. As a type of multi-subunit E3 ligase, cullin4 (CUL4)-based E3 ligase (CRL4) complex is involved in a variety of cellular processes, such as hormonal and stress responses in plants. In spite of several reports on the versatile roles of CRL4 in various signalings in Arabidopsis, CRL4's function in rice has been poorly known. To learn about CRL4-mediated cellular processes in rice in more detail, OsCUL4 that exhibits the highest homology with Arabidopsis CUL4 was isolated, and its expression patterns in various tissues and in response to plant hormones and abiotic stresses were monitored. Exogenous application of ABA or cytokinin increased the transcript levels of the OsCUL4 gene. Moreover, OsCUL4 was significantly upregulated in response to drought and salt stresses. These findings imply that OsCUL4 may be functionally related to ABA- and/or cytokinin-mediated cellular responses. OsCUL4 directly interacted with OsDDB1, an adaptor protein of CRL4, indicating that OsCUL4 can act as a scaffold protein of CRL4. An expression study on the OsCUL4 gene from this report could be used as a starting point to elucidate cellular responses in which a CRL4-mediated ubiquitination process is involved in rice.

  • Between March 1963, and December 1994, fifty-three patients with a ruptured aneurysm of sinus of Vasalva(RSV) were operated. The RSV originated from the right coronary sinus in 43 patients(81%), from the non coronary sinus in 7 patients(13%), and from combined sinuses in 2 patients. The RSV from the right coronary sinus mainly drained to the right ventricle(81.4%), and the RSV from the non coronary sinus mainly drained to the right atrium(71.4%). Recently, we are using patch to repair the RSV through a double approach. During the operation, concomitant . procedures were performed; 32 Patch repairs of VSD, 14 aortic valvuloplasty, 10 aortic valve replacement, 2 tricuspid valvuloplasty, and one Bentall's procedure. During the follow up period between 1 and 31 years(mean 8 years, 94% follow up), there were 2 late deaths and 14 late complications. Actuarial 10-year survival rate .was 95%, and 10-year actuarial freedom from late event was 53 %. Factor analysis revealed that the combined SBE is a risk factor of late event. Actuarial freedom from failure of aortic valvuloplasty was 55% at 9 years. Although surgical repair of RSV achieved excellent long term survival, aortic regurgitation and endocarditis revealed significant risk factor in long-term results. Therefore, more attention should be required in patients of RSV associated with aortic regurgitation or endocarditis.

  • Animal models can provide a useful tool for the study of some aspects of psychiatric disorders and their treatment. The four criteria for the evaluation of animal models of psychiatric disorders are as following : 1) similarity of inducing conditions 2) similarity of behavioral state 3) common underlying neurobiological mechanisms 4) reversal by clinically effective treatment techniques. Several animal models have been proposed for schizophrenia : phenylethylamine model, L-dopa model, hallucinogen model, cocaine model, amphetamine model, phencyclidine model, noradrenergic reward system lesion model, reticular stimulation model, social isolation model, conditioned avoidance reaction, catalepsy test, paw test, self-stimulation paradigms, latent inhibition paradigms, blocking paradigms, prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex, rodent interaction, social behavior in monkeys, hippocampal damage, high ambient pressure, and models using selective breeding. Among them, animals with bilateral lesion of the hippocampus may provide an adequate animal model for several symptoms of schizophrenia, and ketamine model can reproduce negative symptoms and cognitive deficits as well as positive symptoms of schizophrenia. In conclusion, no model of schizophrenia is entirely representative of the disease, and findings gleaned from model systems must be cautiously interpreted. Furthermore, the process of developing and validating animal models must work in concert with the process to identify reliable measures of human phenomenology.
