An internal friction angle, which is one of strength parameters of granular soils, can be obtained from direct shear tests or triaxial tests. The result of traixial tests can be influenced by various experimental conditions such as confining pressure, shearing rate, specimen diameter and height, and end constraint. In this study, undrained and drained shearing behaviors of Nakdong River sand were investigated for loose (Dr = 40%) and dense (Dr = 80%) specimens with 5, 7, and 10 cm in diameter. Friction angles such as undrained total stress friction angle, undrained effective stress friction angle, and drained friction angle obtained from Mohr's stress circle slightly increased and then decreased as a diameter of a specimen increased from 5, 7 to 10 cm, regardless of relative densities. The difference between friction angles caused by different specimen size was at maximum 4.5 degrees for undrained total stress friction angle of dense specimen. In most cases, there was little difference between friction angles of large and small specimens, which was less than 2 degrees. The difference between an effective friction angle from undrained tests and a drained friction angle from drained tests was at maximum 7 degrees for loose samples but negligible for dense samples.
This study investigates the relationship between the performance of fresh and hardened Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) without heat treatment. The performance of fresh UHPC is determined by the slump flow test related to the fluidity of concrete mixtures, and the air content test. The variables of these tests are the water to binder ratio, superplasticizer dosages and volume fractions of steel fiber. Generally, insufficient fluidity and excessive air contents in concrete mixtures lead to the insufficient packing density related to the performance of harden concrete. The performance of hardened UHPC is determined by the compressive and flexural tensile tests. The results of the fresh UHPC tests show that there is the linear correlation between each variable and the slump flow diameter, and that the slump flow diameter is linearly decreased as the air content ratio increase. Using these results, the formula is developed to predict the fresh performance before mixing UHPC. The results of the hardened UHPC tests show that the hardened performance is not influenced by the air content ratio in the range of 3.2 to 4.2 per cent. However, the flexural tensile strength dominantly influenced by the volume fractions of steel fiber.
This study was performed to examine the freezing and thawing properties of the high strength concrete using recycled coarse aggregate. The recycled coarse aggregate was replaced by 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of natural crushed aggregate. The compressive strength of the concrete used recycled coarse aggregate was shown in more than $400kgf/cm^2$ at the curing age 28 days. The weight loss ratio by freezing and thawing was shown in less than 1% at all mix type. The pulse velocity and relative dynamic modulus were decreased with increasing the freezing and thawing cycles. Also, durability factor for the freezing and thawing were decreased with increasing the content of recycled coarse aggregate. But, recycled concrete replaced with recycled coarse aggregate 100% was shown in more than 60 by durability factor in freezing and thawing of 300cycles Accordingly, these recycled coarse aggregate can be used for high strength concrete.

Undrained cyclic simple shear tests and undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed on silt containing sand in order to investigate the effects of silt contents on the liquefaction strength and shear characteristics of the sand. From the view that the difference of liquefaction strength for different content of silt stems from dilatancy characteristics of the sand, stress-dilatancy relation of the sand was obtained from drained triaxial test in which the mean stress was kept constant. Considerations on liquefaction behaviors were made by comparing the drained and undrained behaviors of sands during static shear test. It is concluded that ${\lambda}$-value of the stress-dilatancy relation will be closely related to the liquefaction strength.
The discrete element code in 2-D, PFC2D, has been used as a tool to simulate various phenomena in rock mechanics and rock engineering. However, the code has an disadvantage that procedure to determine micro-parameters, namely properties of particles and contacts is repetitive and time-consuming. In this study, we analyzed the effect of micro-parameters(for generation of a contact-bonded model) on macro-properties(that were measured numerically by uniaxial compressive test). Based on the analysis, also, the time-saving and reliable method was suggested to determine a complete set of micro-parameters. In order to verify the suggested method, numerical specimens were generated in PFC2D for 10 different rock types at home and abroad. By the two trials for each specimen, in the result, the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and uniaxial compressive strength could be reproduced with being in relative error by about 5% to the values obtained by laboratory tests.

In this study, a new design equation was presented for square CFTs with high-strength concrete subjected to axial compression and bending. In a previous study, a design equation for square CFTs with normal strength concrete was proposed. A parametric study by fiber analysis was performed taking the width-to-thickness ratio (b/t) and the relative concrete strength to the yield strength of the steel tube (fck/Fy) as the main parameters of this study to determine the maximum moment and the axial load at the maximum moment. A new constitutive model for concrete was adopted for fiber analysis in order to take into account the effect of high-strength concrete. The results of the parametric study were embedded into the method which was presented in the previous study to formulate a new design equation that can be easily used for estimating the strength of square CFTs with high-strength concrete.
In this study, a subjective weighting factors were awarded based on some indication of the difficulty of assessing the preconsolidation stress using traditional methods (Casagrande, Onitsuka et al., Silva, Becker et al., Janbu and Karlsrud methods) such as those proposed by Casagrande and Janbu using undisturbed sample obtained from Gwangyang dredged clay with high plasticity located in the southern area of Korean peninsular. These numbers only assess the relative ease of finding preconsolidation stress and say nothing regarding the accuracy of the value. The data were compared with measurements of undrained shear strength using strength incremental ratio, checking where or not the values are in the range of 0.25 to 0.35 (typical values of Korean marine clay) and analyzing standard deviation(degree of variability). The measurements of undrained shear strength were obtained from unconfined compression tests (UCT). When determining preconsolidation stress of Korean marine clay, at first, the work method proposed by Becker et al. and the bilogarithmic method proposed by Onitsuka et al. should be used. In addition, preconsolidation pressure should be estimated using the traditional Casagrande method as a basic of comparison.

This study investigates the characteristic properties of strength, flowability, durability and drying shrinkage to control strength and to reduce heat of hydration of high performance concrete using crushed stone fines. According to the experimental results, when crushed stone fines are increased every 10%, $10{\sim}15%$ of compressive strength is decreased and flowability of high performance concrete is effectively improved due to the decrease of modulus of deformation and confined water ratio. When crushed stone fines are replaced every 10%, $4^{\circ}C$ of the highest adiabatic temperature rise is decreased by reducing the unit cement. However, 5% of drying shrinkage is increased in the same condition In the meantime, durability of high performance concrete is excellent, having over 100% of good relative dynamic modulus of elasticity due to fineness of formation mused by the increase of the unit powder content and the improvement of flowability, without regard to the replacement of crushed stone fines. Therefore, It can be said that the usage of crushed stone fines can control the strength of high performance concrete by replacement and reduce heat of hydration.
The local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of thin steel plates in the steel-concrete composite column were evaluated by nonlinear finite element analyses. The proposed width-to-thickness limit ratio was based on elastic buckling analyses, in which the increased local buckling capacity of the plate due to the in-filled concrete was considered by the boundary conditions of the thin plate. Considering the initial imperfections and residual stresses, we determined the initial local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of the thin plates with various width-to-thickness ratios. The formula to evaluate the compressive capacity of the steel-concrete composite column based on the effective width of the plate was proposed. For verification, values determined by the formula were compared with the experimental results.
Undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed on silt contained in the sand in order to investigate the effect of silt contents on the liquefaction strength and shear characterist ifs of the sand. As the result of this experiment, the weakest percentage of silt contained in the sand was 30% for all the relative density considered in the test. Also, the same bests were performed to find the effect of cyclic speed applied ranging from 0.1Hz to 5Hz on the liquefaction strength. The more the silt is contained in the sand, the greater the liquefaction strength was affected by cyclic speed, While the silt -containing sand was far less influenced by the cyclic speed than clay containing sand. These results are believed to be caused by the change of pore water pressure of the effective stress path.
