  • Over the past 10 years, South Korea has implemented various plantation projects including the Pine Restoration Project in Tujiin Nars and the desertification prevention forestation in Lun soum. This study has evaluated the implementation feasibility on the small-scale A/R CDM projects in Mongolia through which carbon emission credits can be secured. Characteristics, pros and cons, economic feasibility, and project execution feasibility were compared among three possible sites, Khyalganat, Tujiin Nars, and Lun soum. Among the three evaluated sites, Tujiin Nars has the better condition in tree growth, economic feasibility, and the applicability of experience than the other two sites. A/R CDM project in Mongolia, which has a great environmental benefit of combating desertification, is expected to have some effectiveness such as lowering costs from credit benefit, sustainable management by villagers, contribution to communities, investor's contribution to society and achievement of green image, and strengthening forestry cooperation between Korea and Mongolia.

  • We conducted this study to provide essential data for implementing restoration measures on the physical properties of the geology, topography, and soil of the landcreep areas in Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. The strata of the survey area comprised topsoil, weathered soil, weathered rock, and soft rock layers. The landcreep area, caused by colluvial debris, was located in a convex topography shape distributed as bedrock with shales and incorporated with sandstone. According to the measurement of the displacement meter, the surveyed area has crept from 1.1 mm to 6.5 mm during the recurrent landcreep between 1 July and 27 August, 2020. The landcreep had progressed over two directions (S65° W, E45° S, and E70° S) which were similar to the groundwater flow direction (E82.5° S and S16.8° W). The average slope of the landcreep area occurred on a gentle slope (19.3°), lower than the average slope of the mountain area (25°) in Korea. The bulk density in the groundwater areas was lower than that in other surveyed areas.

  • This paper proposes a method to detect and monitor the land creeping area using a UAV to analyze the damaged area efficiently. Using a UAV, it was possible to secure the safety of the investigators before the field survey and effectively utilize it to establish an investigation plan because an orthophoto can be used to detect and scale the cracks in a land creeping area. In addition, it was possible to analyze the scale of the crack quantitatively by extracting the topographic information from the orthophoto. The study sites were found to have a total crack area of 1.01 ha, a length of 1.07 km, an average width of 10 m, and a step distance of 1 to 10 m. Periodic UAV measurements can be used to detect displacements on the land creeping area and monitor the direction and scale of crack spread. Therefore, it is expected to be used effectively during recovery planning. Applying the UAV to the land creeping area resulted in the qualitative and quantitative results quickly and easily in dangerous mountainous watersheds. Therefore, it is expected that it will contribute to the development of related industries because of the high availability of a UAV in forest soil sediment disasters, such as landslides, debris flow, and land creeping area.

  • It is often crucial to obtain a map of flood inundated area with more accurate and rapid manner. This study attempts to evaluate the potential of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for mapping of flood inundated area in Imjin river basin. Multitemporal RADARSAT SAR data of three different dates were obtained at the time of flooding on August 4 and before and after the flooding. Once the data sets were geometrically corrected and preprocessed, the temporal characteristics of relative radar backscattering were analyzed. By comparing the radar backscattering of several surface features, it was clear that the flooded rice paddy showed the distinctive temporal pattern of radar response. Flooded rice paddy showed significantly lower radar signal while the normally growing rice paddy show high radar returns, which also could be easily interpreted from the color composite imagery. In addition to delineating the flooded rice fields, the multitemporal radar imagery also allow us to distinguish the afterward condition of once-flooded rice field.

  • The 2018 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report announced that deforestation in North Korea is the most extreme situation and in terms of climate change, this deforestation is a global scale issue. To respond deforestation, various study and projects are conducted based on remote sensing, but access to public data in North Korea is limited, and objectivity is difficult to be guaranteed. In this study, the forest detection based on density estimation in statistic using Landsat imagery was conducted in Gangwon province which is the only administrative district divided into South and North. The forest spatial data of South Korea was used as data for the labeling of forest and Non-forest in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and a threshold (0.6658) for forest detection was set by Gaussian Probability Density Function (PDF) estimation by category. The results show that the forest area decreased until the 2000s in both Korea, but the area increased in 2010s. It is also confirmed that the reduction of forest area on the local scale is the same as the policy direction of urbanization and industrialization at that time. The Kappa value for validation was strong agreement (0.8) and moderate agreement (0.6), respectively. The detection based on the Gaussian PDF estimation is considered a method for complementing the statistical limitations of the existing detection method using satellite imagery. This study can be used as basic data for deforestation in North Korea and Based on the detection results, it is necessary to protect and restore forest resources.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the contribution of tree plantation, tree breeding and soil erosion control techniques developed during Saemaul Undong periods to the successful forest rehabilitation in the Republic of Korea. We surveyed a various literature of forest journals and had deep interview with forest experts who were actively involved in the forest rehabilitation projects. In the Republic of Korea, the forest rehabilitation was started with Saemaul Undong in 1970s and carried out to make the country green and to restore degraded forest lands by supports of tree plantation, tree breeding and soil erosion control techniques. Various techniques such as seed storage, seedling production, mass vegetative propagation (grafting and cutting) and special planting at denuded land or slash and burn site were developed for tree plantation. All techniques developed for the forest rehabilitation were connected with Saemaul Undong which caused active participation of local community people. Therefore, the development of tree plantation, tree breeding and soil erosion control skills had great impact on the job creation and income sources of local dwellers. It would be an applicable case to developing countries suffering with deforestation and forest degradation if the Korean skills developed for forest rehabilitation could be transferred.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a management strategy for the recovery of carbon storage capacity of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation area. For the purpose, the biomass and stand carbon storage over time after the forest rehabilitation by tree type for Betula platyphylla, Pinus densiflora, and Alnus hirsuta trees which are major tree species widely planted for the forest rehabilitation in the abandoned coal mine were calculated, and compared them with general forest. The carbon storage in abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas was lower than that in general forests, and based on tree species, Pinus densiflora stored 48.9%, Alnus hirsuta 41.1%, and Betula platyphylla 27.0%. This low carbon storage is thought to be caused by poor growth because soil chemical properties, such as low TOC and total nitrogen content, in the soil of abandoned coal mine forest rehabilitation areas, were adverse to vegetation growth compared to those in general forests. DBH, stand biomass, and stand carbon storage tended to increase after forest rehabilitation over time, whereas stand density decreased. Stand' biomass and carbon storage increased as DBH and stand density increased, but there was a negative correlation between stand density and DBH. Therefore, after forest rehabilitation, growth status should be monitored, an appropriate growth space for trees should be maintained by thinning and pruning, and the soil chemical properties such as fertilization must be managed. It is expected that the carbon storage capacity the forest rehabilitation area could be restored to a level similar to that of general forests.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate soil chemical and microbiological characteristics in Yeongnam, Honam, Chungcheong and Kangwon for forest rehabilitation and management in abandoned coal mine areas. Average soil pH was 5.5 (4.2 ~ 8.1). Average contents of TOC, total N and available P2O5 were 1.1% (0.1 ~ 2.6%), 0.08% (0.02 ~ 0.14%) and 16.1 ppm (3.4 ~ 63.1 ppm), respectively. Average CEC was 3.4 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ and total no. of bacteria1 showed $4.9{\times}10^{12}CFU\;g^{-1}$. According to areas, soil pH was the highest in Kangwon (6.1), and Yeongnam (5.7), Honam (5.3) and Chungcheong (4.7), respectively. TOC and total no. of bacteria showed no difference. Total-N was higher in order of Yeongnam (0.10%) > Chungcheong (0.08%) = Honam (0.07%) > Kangwon (0.06%), while Av. $P_2O_5$ Yeongnam (23.9 ppm) = Chungcheong (24.5 ppm) > Honam (10.9 ppm) = Kangwon (4.9 ppm). Yeongnam showed higher value in CEC (17.5 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$) than any other areas. Generally, soil characteristic of Yeongnam was better for vegetation growth than any other areas, while Kangwon was worse. According to elapsed time from forest rehabilitation, patterns of soil pH and CEC showed decrease according to time while TOC and total-N increased. There were no significant differences in Av. $P_2O_5$ and total no. of bacteria. Soil chemical characteristics in abandoned coal mine areas were disadvantageous for vegetation growth in comparison with general forest soils. Therefore, sustainable managements such as fertilization are necessary for good rooting and growth of vegetation.
