A Visual Methods Approach to the Formation of Class Identity and Practices of Everyday Life -A Case Study on Youths of 'Gangbuk' ('강북' 청소년들의 일상생활 문화와 계급 정체성 형성에 대한 영상방법론적 연구)

  • This paper addresses questions on the marginalized position of youths of 'Gangbuk' and elucidates how they construct their own identities in the individual trajectories of everyday life. Three years of research, including participatory observation and in-depth interviews, was conducted on nine students from Northeastern district of Seoul. The research also adopted reflexive photography interview method in order to encourage the informants to actively participate in the research. The result illustrates the diversity of the everyday life experiences. More 'marginalized' youths from middle to lower class background had to endure the burdens of their daily lives without programs. Still, they were elaborating their own cultural taste and positive self-narratives at the periphery of the mainstream culture, by practicing music, online community activities and bodily performances. They had to negotiate the crucial turn of life after their graduation, when they entered into the harsh social competition with limited resources. We observed how they gradually assimilate the identity of the 'working youth', some of them developing a positive valorization of their experiences labor. Findings underline the active role of the cultural practices in the making of class identity of the youth and the necessity of researches situating the making of class identity and the reproduction of the class for the youth in the larger geography of class culture in the contemporary Korean society. Lastly, it is argued that these youths should not be considered as determined subjects, who reproduce already established class identities, but as active agents of their lives who deserve more respects and attentions from the society.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in early 2020, became an opportunity for unprecedented global reflection and change. And it served as an opportunity to promote a new paradigm in all areas of society, including politics, economy, culture, and industry. In the midst of this upheaval, the 2022 IAA exhibition, which was held in four years, was held as an exhibition that even proposed new concepts of smart logistics and mobility services. Among them, various concepts were also proposed in exhibitions related to last mile mobility, the focus of this study.As a result of this study, the main trend of last mile mobility shown in the IAA 2022 exhibition is that the property of physical products with functions as social interfaces is expanding into the PSS (Product-Service System) ecosystem in which products and services are systematically linked. As a result, the need for a methodological approach that can organically link the design planning of social services and the development of products corresponding to it was derived.

Case study of Ontact PBL Development and Application to Improve Teaching Presence & Learning Presence (교수실재감 및 학습실재감을 높이기 위한 Ontact PBL 개발 및 적용 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to realize Ontact PBL that can sufficiently contain interactive elements that can increase the perception of reality between professors and students in an environment without human contact. This is a class designed, developed, and operated ontact PBL for the first semester of 2021. As a result of diagnosing the realism of teaching and learning for students who took the class, the average teaching realism improved significantly by 0.95. This was found to be effective in improving the sense of realism in teaching as there were many related opinions in the reflective journal on students' classes. In addition, there was an effect on learning presence, and it was confirmed that emotional presence, which is a sub-element of learning presence, significantly improved by 0.7, social presence by 0.5, and cognitive presence by 0.6. Learning presence also confirmed the students' reflection on the class, and it was possible to judge that Ontact PBL was effective in improving the sense of presence.

  • This study aims at the evaluation of procedural changes and policy outcome caused by the Open Method of Coordination(OMC) on Social Inclusion in the European Union. The policy instruments of the OMC introduced by the Lisbon Council can be divided into two groups: the outcome-oriented New Public Management(NPM) and the process-oriented Directly Deliberative Polyarchy(DDP). By considering the adoption process of the NPM instruments, it can be said that OMC could not be effective due to the vagueness of its objectives, the institutional barriers in decentralized decision-making, and the rejection of benchmarking by the Member States. The intended learning by deliberation and peer review as indicated by the normative DDP, is hard to achieve because they are not so reflexive due to relatively restricted and closed participation. We also cannot find any significant reduction of poverty after the long implementation of the OMC. Considering the higher recognition of poverty problem and expanding NGOs concerned with it, however, we may see some significant impact in the future.

Collision between Welfare and Work in a South Korean Welfare-to-Work Program (사회복지와 노동시장의 연계가 초래한 근로연계복지의 딜레마 -자활사업의 사례를 중심으로-)

  • This study aims to analyze fundamental dilemmas of welfare-to-work programs, which aim to introduce labor market principles to the welfare system. Through a qualitative case study of a South Korean welfare-to-work program (the self-sufficiency program), this study demonstrates that various institutional problems are an inevitable consequence of such welfare-to-work programs because they have tried to combine two contradictory values and principles of the labor market system and the social welfare system in one policy. The analysis of the collisions between social welfare and market labor in the self-sufficiency program suggests that not only institutional reforms, but also profound debates on the values and principles underlying welfare-to-work programs are necessary to solve the phenomenal conflicts and problems with such programs.

  • Why can't we be free from diverse crises threatening our lives in a high-tech future society? Disasters interrupt habitual and institutionalized patterns of behavior and bring about a kind of social shock to make people follow social and individual changes. An interesting fact revealed in the study finding is that the role of disaster management control tower was proper during the Great Flood ofthe Eulchuk Year(1925) and the unified disaster management system facilitated smooth cooperation with relevant authorities. Also, motivating disaster management organizations positively influenced organizational commitment. This implies that if we constantly ask to improve current institutions by introspecting and learning, based on historical records, we may be able to find insights for a safe society of the future.

We-Human -Being Together of the Lives (우리 - 사람 -생명들의 더불어 있음에 관해서)

  • The formation of knowledge of the people of Korean society is the social practices of collective subjectivity. Subjectivity is the truth of the self, which is incessantly created, questioned and modified in the milieu of self-reflection. In an attempt to examine the hermeneutics of the subject of Korean society, a conceptual framework is proposed, which, with the notion of life embedded, consists of a historical sequence of the popular, minjung, multitude, people and community. The period of 1960s saw the ambiguous mass of lifes floating, the individual with his/her own interior world of consciousness emerge. The ideological solidarity is formed in the the next two decades, in contestation with immediate and physical threatening such as poverty and dictatorship. The democratization of Korean society and the global expansion of neoliberal regime gave a re-birth of multitude and people which is characterized with their pursuit of the co-existence and co-realization of singularity and universality on the ethical principle of the open and communicative radicality.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the concept of transformative learning and the meaning and process of learning. Transformative learning explains that learning takes place in three aspects. First, Instrumental learning takes place in the process of acquiring knowledge based on facts, such as hypothesis testing. Secondly, Communicative learning recognizes the meaning of other people's thoughts or social norms, cultures and values through language. Thirdly, emancipatory learning makes through critical self-reflection by understanding oneself on the basis of psychological and cultural assumptions. The implications of outplacement convergence education, is that main purpose of outplacement education is to build theory and shift the perspective to learning conversion in general operation practice. The content of the outplacement convergence education is that it should shift from instrumental learning to communicative and emancipatory learning.

  • The Buma Uprising, which took place in Busan and Masan from 16 to 20 October 1979, was a challenge against the contradictions of the Yushin Regime. Only after 6 days from the insurrection, the 10 26 Accident transpired, in which the then president Park Chung-hee was assassinated, and the Buma Uprising, which acted as the fuse to the shooting, remained as an 'incomplete uprising'. To commensurate with the subject of the paper 'The Truth about Buma Uprising and Historical Reflection', the purpose of this study is to explore how the uprising began, unfolded, and oppressed by comparing it with Busan Uprising and Masan Uprising. It also focuses to discuss, in detail, the effect of the demonstration by college students and the general public and suppression by the forces of the police and military on President Park and his government. This year, we celebrate the 39th anniversary of Buma Uprising, and with all the issues of discovering the truth, restoration of reputation and more, there are decisions and resolves to make including amendment of the legal system. However, there are certain groups of people who act as they led the uprising and mislead and exploit the facts of the events through illegitimate records and testimony, making it impossible to determine the truth. Discovering the truth will require acquisition of objective materials, testimony of those involved in the event and field research as well as imposition of legal and social punishment on those who distorted the truth about the event.

The Meaning of Death and Caregiving in Old Age: Reading from the Novels of Kyung-ran Jo (문학 텍스트 속의 노년 죽음과 돌봄: 조경란 소설을 중심으로)

  • This study portraits the way of self-preparation for death among the elderly and examines the meaning and values attached to the elderly-care by their family and friends through the analysis of Kyung-ran Jo's novels. First, the author describes the difficulties and inner conflict of women who provide care for the elderly, especially those facing death in the near future. She also describes how the acceptance of death and self-discovery among the caregivers can be developed from the experience of long term care. These are consistent with the arguments by Ecofemnist on positive sides of providing caregiving in an aging society. In her novels, caregiving from young women is not described as the consequences of internalized gender norms of traditional Confucian culture. Rather, it is depicted as attitude toward a life in a commune where the meaning of life and death of elderly is shared between generations. In addition, struggles of the elderly figures against diseases and the process of their death provide an opportunity for young caregivers to overcome the trauma of other's death witnessed in their childhood. They lead the young caregivers to reflect themselves by raising ontologistic questions on life and death. The author shows the communication between generations presenting the self-preparation of death from the old generation undergoing irreversible aging and caregiving activities of significant others from the young generation. In doing so, the author points out the ethical grounds for diseases and death in old age given the condition of personalization of death in the modern society.
