  • A total of 181 college students(61 males 121 females) with at least 5 years of living abroad (Returnee Group) and another group of 181 students (92 males and 93 females) without extended period of living abroad (Comparison Group) participated in the study by completing a questionnaire consisting of Acculturation Index, Multidimensional Acculturation Scale, Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire, Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, CES-D, and WHOQOL. The results indicated that the Returnee Group, compared to the Comparison Group, reported as good adjustment toward college life in Korea and positive attitude toward the Korean identity, but a higher level of loneliness. When the Returnee Group were divided into 4 different groups on the basis of acculturation pattern, the Integration and Assimilation Type reported a better adjustment to college life, lower depression and loneliness and better quality of life than the Marginalization Type. The Mariginalization Type appears to be the most vulnerable group, experiencing difficulties in all areas of adjustment, and is clearly in need of interventions. Limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • In some studies regarding acculturation strategies developed Berry(1997), not the preference for integration, but the preference for assimilation showed the best adjustment, which is different from the results of the majority of studies. For the reason of these results, we supposed that when the people of the host society expect the minority members to be assimilated to the host society and the minority members have very similar culture to the host society, the preference for assimilation in the minority members would show the best adjustment. And we tested this hypothesis with Korean-Chinese who had very similar culture to Korean culture and Han-Chinese who had very different culture from Korean culture. For two hundred and twenty five students(63 Korean-Chinese and 162 Han-Chinese), we asked them to complete a questionnaire including Acculturation Strategies Scale, Psychological Well-being Scale, and Depression Inventory. Data from the survey were analysed using two-way ANOVA. As a result, the interaction effect of acculturation strategies and ethnic types affected both of psychological well-being and depression. In details, for Korean-Chinese students, the preference for assimilation showed the highest levels of psychological well-being and the lowest levels of depression, but the preference for integration showed the lowest levels of psychological well-being and the highest levels of depression. For Han-Chinese students, the preference for integration showed the highest levels of psychological well-being and the lowest levels of depression, and the preference for marginalization showed the lowest levels of psychological well-being and the highest levels of depression. We discussed the meanings of the results, implications, and interventions to help Chinese students adjust Korean society.

  • A recent rapid growth in the number of Chinese international students in Korea has generated interest in the key factors to affect their acculturation in domestic culture. In accordance with the growing interest, the present study aims to empirically test and analyze the effects of demographics (gender, age, the length of stay, the length of Korean language education and the level of Korean language skills), SNS use patterns (personal network sizes and hours of use for Korean and Chinese SNS, and motivations of Korean or Chinese SNS uses), and social support through Korean and Chinese SNS on acculturation for Chinese international students in Korea. A total of 322 Chinese international students in Korea participated in the online survey. Results showed that use of Chinese SNS for entertainment had an negative impact on the acculturation, while the use of Korean SNS had an overall positive impact. Finally, this study suggests that the practitioners regarding the issue of acculturation for international students in Korea should focus more on specific guidelines to help their appropriate SNS uses rather than on to prevent their SNS addiction problems.
