  • This study was aimed to investigate the nature of functional impairment in social phobia and the correlation between the functional impairment and the duration of the disease, and the severity of the symptoms. In 66 patients with social phobia, the functional impairments were assessed with the SDS(Sheehan's disability scale) and the LSRDS(Liebowitz self-rated disability scale), and the severity of the symptoms was assessed with the SPS(social phobia scale). The results were summarized as follow : 1) Most of the social phobic patients reported moderate to severe impairment in their lives in areas of education, employment, family relationships, romantic relationships, social networks, and other interests, etc. 2) There was a significant correlation between the severity of the symptoms and the disability in their lives. 3) The offensive social phobic patients reported that they had more disability in their lives and more severe symptoms than non-offensive patients did. 4) There was no significant correlation between the duration of disease and the disability in their lives. Conclusively, we confirmed that social phobia was associated with the functional impairment in most areas of their lives.

  • It is our purpose to evaluate the validity & interrater reliability of CIDI-social phobia, Korean Version. Method : CIDI-Social phobia Korean Version was evaluated by 50 Korean social phobia patients who met diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV. The authors calculated diagnostic concordance rate between clinical diagnosis & diagnosis by using the CIDI-social phobia Korean Version for evaluating validity. We also calculated the interrater diagnostic concordance of 20 social phobia patients for evaluating interrater reliability. Results : Validity of the CIDI-social phobia Korean Version was 0.74, & Interrater reliability(kappa) was 0.75. Conclusions : CIDI-Social phobia, Korean version had a good reliability & validity. That was proved a good instrument for diagnosing social phobia for general population and clinical patients

  • This study aimed to investigate the changes of emotional perception biases according to the level of social phobia and the relationship with visuospatial attention allocation ability. This study used the Korean self-report assessment test (Korean version of social avoidance and distress, K-SAD) to measure the level of social phobia. Moreover, the emotional perception and useful field of view (UFOV) tasks were employed for measuring emotional perception biases and visuospatial attention allocation ability, respectively. A total of 118 participants participated in this experiment, and only 107 (males: 94, females: 13) data were analyzed due to the exclusion of response errors and other statistical problems. The average age of the participants used in the analysis was 21 years (SD: 3.64), and those participants were divided into three groups according to the K-SAD scores. Consequently, all experimental groups showed negative emotional perception biases in the emotional perception task, but the magnitudes of the biases of each group were not significantly different. Furthermore, the positive emotional perception biases were higher at higher levels of social phobia, which could be related to the tendency of interpreting positive stimuli negatively. In the UFOV task, the higher the level of social phobia, the lower the visuospatial attention allocation ability. These results suggest that the deterioration of visuospatial attention allocation ability potentially contributes to the increase of positive emotional perception biases by being difficult to perceive external stimuli. Thus, this paper discusses the potential contribution of visuospatial attention allocation ability to the increased perceptual biases of positive emotions as the level of social phobia increases.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of paranoid tendency and social isolation in relationship between covert narcissism and Tajin Kyofusho(TKS). We administered self-report questionnaires to 334(163 male, 171 female) undergraduate students. Path analysis conducted using structural equation modeling. Path analysis indicated that the overall model fitted the data well. Analysis showed that paranoid tendency and social isolation sequentially mediated relationship between covert narcissism and TKS. The finding suggest that we could focus on covert narcissistic personality, paranoid cognitive process, and behavioral social isolation to understand and intervene TKS.

  • We have studied 16 patients diagnosed of social phobia among the hospitalized patients for 1 year, from September 1994 to August 1995, to evaluate whether serial phobic symptoms are the prodromal symptoms of the other psychiatric disorder or concomitant disorder. The results were as follows; 1) In the subject of this study, the mean age of onset of social phobic symptoms was 17.3, and the mean age of inital hospital visit was 27.4. 2) The proportion of offensive type was higher than the simple type : 7 cases of the subjects classified as simple type, 9 cases as offensive type. 3) According to the type of social phobia, they developed different type of psychiatric disorder. Majority of patients with simple type had final diagnosis of mood disorder. Patients with offensive type had schizophrenia spectrum disorder, such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder, and schizophrenia, personality disorder. 4) Social phobic symptoms have taken various courses according to the final diagnosis. In the patients who developed major depression and delusional disorder, social phobic symptoms have not been changed during the course. Patients with the final diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder have showed various social phobic symptoms. • Virtual reality technology is one of the important technologies that will affect our life in many ways. This novel technology will draw new paradigm into the medical field due to its advantages in physical safety and environment that are fully controlled. Phobia treatment using VR technology has been implemented and its feasibility has been proved through a number of researches in many institutions. This study has observed the current progress of its technology environment and the trend of research. Also, This study has analyzed the results from domestic and international data. Analysis shows that other countries are ahead of korea in all aspects of the phobia treatment using virtual reality method. Although the authors limited the kinds of journals, the amount of quantity in international researches are two times more than domestics. Also, The researchers in other countries concentrate on the multi-modal studies. To use virtual reality in the phobia treatment, we need to understand the needs of the society members and the government has responsibility to support what the researchers need.

The total subjects were 392 high school students in Seoul. The scales wwereadministered to the subjects and we examined the reliability and validity. The results were as follows. According to the factor analysis, six factors abstracted from the father's rearing attitudes:rejection, high expectation, anxious, control, emotional care and overconcern of other's opinion. By the method of reliability analysis and factor analysis, finally selected items were 60. The reliability of the factors ranged from .76 to .90 by Cronbach ${\alpha}$. Five factors abstracted from the mother's rearing attitudes:anxious, high expectation, rejection, emotional care and overconcern of other's opinion. And total selected items of mother's rearing attitudes were 61. The reliability of the factors ranged from .72 to .91 by Cronbach ${\alpha}$. The construct validity and reliability of this inventory were supported.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate empirically the relationship among self-image, depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity in adolescents. 1602 normal adolescents(697 males and 905 females) responded to self report scales-Offer Self-Image Questionnaire-Revised, 3 subscales of Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and LISREL to examine the effect of self-image on depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity, and to test the relationship among the above 4 variables. Adolescents with low self-image showed significantly higher scores in the scales of depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity than did adolescents with high self-image. The result of LISREL showed that the low self-image leads to the emotional state of depression and anxiety, and those of depression and anxiety lead to the increase of social sensitivity, suggesting that self-image has a direct effect on depression and anxiety, and has a direct effect on social sensitivity in adolescent. These results were discussed in terms of implications for the prevention and treatment of adolescent social phobia.
