A Study on the Performance and the Prospect of School Library Rehabilitation Project (학교도서관 활성화 사업의 성과와 전망에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzes the performance of school library rehabilitation project for the past four years. The project was launched in 2002 as a 5-year project from 2003 to 2007. Based on the analysis, the author suggests some considerations for the second phase of the project. First, librarians are the focal point to manage the library newly built and remodeled at a massive budget of 300 billion Korean won. Second, when developing curriculum employing school libraries, the curriculum should be differentiated by grade. class, textbook and even chapter. Third. the project should demonstrate the positive influence of school libraries on students' academic achievement so that the parents and community leaders voluntarily promote school libraries. Forth, the project should examine diverse users to successfully meet their demand. Fifth, the project should incorporate capacity building in librarian training course. It is also crucial that librarians themselves make visible effort to achieve an expert status before students and fellow teachers.

Ethical Dilemmas in Teacher-librarians' Professional Practice (사서교사의 윤리적 딜레마에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigates ethical dilemmas of teacher-librarians in their professional practice. Within the framework of "Librarians' Statement of Ethics" by Korean Library Association, the study used the survey and semi-structured interview with teacher-librarians. 259 teacher-librarians responded the survey and 5 teacher-librarians participated the interview. The survey was analyzed using descriptive statistics to find how often teacher-librarians experience ethical dilemmas. The semi-structured interview was transcribed and analyzed to draw the individual cases of teacher-librarians' ethical dilemmas. The results indicate that teacher-librarians experience ethical dilemmas in relation to information access and intellectual freedom most often. It was difficult for teacher-librarians to relate their professional duties with their expertise and that they were not clear on how to avoid copyright issues and how to deal with the balance between users and copyright holders. This study had implications that individual dilemma cases are so context-dependent that teacher-librarians had to make decisions individually. They tried hard to find the balance between protecting students from harmful resources and library ethics. Researchers and practitioners need focus more on finding where the balance is and how teacher-librarians deal with their ethical dilemmas.

  • 필자는 지금부터 5개월 전인 2011년 2월 1일자로 15년간 근무한 대학도서관을 떠나 대학 기획팀으로 자리를 옮겼다. 15년이란 시간이 결코 짧지 않기에 막상 도서관을 떠나 대학행정부서로 이동한다는 사실을 받아들이는데 힘이 들었다. 평소 '사람만큼 환경에 잘 적응하는 동물도 없다'라는 말에 상당히 공감하는 편이지만, 학부기간을 포함하면 거의 20년을 넘게 함께 한 도서관 현장을 떠난다는 아쉬움과 섭섭함, 그리고 새로운 환경에 잘 적응할 수 있을까?'라는 두려움이 복잡하게 교차했었다. 특히, 사서e마을의 운영, 관리는 큰 걱정이자 숙제이다. 왜냐하면 대학행정부서에서 근무하다보면 아무래도 도서관계 동향이나 정보에 대해 무뎌질 수밖에 없고 본의 아니게 사이트 운영에 소홀해질 개연성이 높다고 하겠다. 다행스러운 점은 2010 년 5~6월경 사서e 마을의 운영시스템을 제로보드 4.0에서 제로보드 XE로 개편한 점인데, 이는 제로보드 XE가 사이트 관리에 있어 편의성, 시스템적 안정성이 이전 버전에 비해 한층 낫기 때문이다. 이미 언급한 바와 같이 대학 기획팀에서 근무한 지 겨우 5개월 지났다. 15년의 도서관 경력에 비할 바는 아니지만 최근 대학도서관 사서직원의 대학행정부서 이동이 이전에 비해 훨씬 많아진 점에 착안하여 이의 동향과 원인, 득실에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.

미국의 사서직 윤리강령

  • 전문직의 특징을 우리는 두가지로 말할 수 있다. 첫째 전문직이 수행하는 일의 성격이 관례적이며 일상적인 것이 아니고 지적인 판단력을 요하는 것이라는 점이다. 둘째 전문지그이 일은 그 목적이 개인의 금전적 이익에 있지 아니 하고 대사회봉사에 있다는 점이다. 바로 이 점이 전문직단체에서 윤리강령을 표방하게 되는 소이이다. 그래서 어떤 이들은 전문직의 특징을 말할 때 첫째 일의 성격이 지적이란 것과 둘째 직업윤리강령을 갖고 있다는 것을 들기도 한다. 지금 우리나라에서는 사서직이 전문직으로서 그 기반을 굳히려고 안간힘을 쓰는 중에 있다. 여러 가지 방면의 노력이 요구되겠지만, 외국의 선예에 따라 한국사서직의 윤리강령을 제정하는 일이 우리 앞에 놓인 한가지 중대한 과제가 아닐 수 없다. 우리가 이 작업을 시작할 때 참고가 될까싶어 미국의 사서직윤리강령을 번역ㆍ소개하는 바이다. 여기에 싣는 전문을 포함하여 28조목에 걸친 내용은 1938년 ALA에 의하여 채택된 이래 지금까지 통용되고 있는 것으로서 현재 미국에서는 본강령에 대한 개정안이 제시되어 관계인들에 의하여 검사중에 있음을 부기하여 둔다.

  • 정보통신 기술의 발달은 도서관에 많은 영향을 끼치고 있으며 도서관의 많은 업무중에서 정보조직 또는 정보처리로 지칭되는 분류 및 목록 업무는 계속해서 변화하고 있다. 그러므로 목록 업무를 담당하는 목록 사서의 역할이 달라지고 목록사서로서 적합한 자격요건도 변하는 것이 마땅하며 그러한 자격을 갖출 수 있도록 목록 교육도 변해야만다. 본 연구는 1996년부터 11999년도 5월까지 American Libraries의 사서직 구인광고에서 목록사서직의 지원자격을 필수적인 요건과 바람직한 요건으로 나누어 내용 분석을 하였다. 또한 가장 중요하게 비중을 두고 있는 요건과 새롭게 강조되고 있는 요건을 목록 교육의 내용 및 방향과 연관하여 제시하였다.

Changing Roles of the Librarians under the New Information Environment (정보환경의 변화와 사서의 역할변용)

  • This article investigates the roles the librarians can take under the rapidly changing information environment of 21st century, in order to maintain and develop the values as professionals continuously. It suggests six role models: 1) Information educator planning and implementing the user instructions in the libraries; 2) Information counselor providing humane services through counseling on reading and cooperations in research of the library users; 3) Information searcher searching and providing thc information rapidly and accurately to the users; 4) Information mediator evaluating the usefulness of the acquired information and even providing the consulting on information management; 5) Subject speaalist specialized in specific information services; 6) Cultural program planner planning and implementing the various cultural programs.

The Effects of Emotional Labor Level on the Level of Job Satisfaction and Library Information Service Provision in Public Library Librarians (공공도서관 사서의 감정노동수준이 직무만족 및 도서관정보서비스 제공수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of emotional labor level on the level of job satisfaction and library information service provision in public libraries. The research model used emotional labor levels as an independent variable; job satisfaction and level of library information service provision as a dependent variable; and organizational culture as a control factor. The data were collected randomly from 220 librarians of public libraries in Seoul by distributing and collecting internet surveys. Reliability analysis, correlation coefficient analysis, multiple regression analysis, and regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 18.0 program. The statistic hypothesis test results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, public library librarians did not like to express their emotions to users, trying to express their emotions more positively than what they were actually feeling. Second, although librarians experience emotional labors, they feel a sense of achievement when undertaking their tasks and develop pride and happiness in their work. As librarians perceive their work professional, they overcome emotional labors, and have pride in their work. Third, although librarians experience emotional labors, a reasonable job evaluation with goals, and their relationships with colleagues would lead to accomplishment in their work. In addition, although the evaluation of employees is focused on performance, librarians improve their service if library users are satisfied with their service and the services are provided adequately.

Transforming School Library Materials into Images and Digital Forms (학교도서관의 매체변환에 관한 이론과 실제)

  • The major role of school librarians in Korea has been providing reading guidance and library user education with paper resources. However, digital users have become more ubiquitous and demand more information with the images and digital materials. Therefore, school libraries need to collect more images and digital materials. At the same time, school librarians have to equip themselves with the ability to cope with this transformation. The qualified school librarians not only should have a teaching certificate but also know about techniques to transform various library materials into digital formats. Teachers and students could use these materials for their Web site homepages and Powerpoint presentations.

Collaborative Network for Children's Reading Program: Making of Bookmagic (전문가 협력을 통한 어린이 독서교육 프로그램 개발 및 운영 - "책수리마수리" 프로젝트의 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Bookmagic is a new reading program that encourages children of 5-15 ages to enjoy reading. Bookmagic provides free downloadable resources such as pre-reading and after-reading activities, booklists, posters and awards. Since a number of reading programs have already been developed, published and used, Bookmagic is not a toally new project. However, it is distinguished by the process of creating the program. While most of the reading programs available in Korea were developed by individual occupations(academic experts, private enterprises, civic organisations, associations of librarians or teachers), Bookmagic was designed by a team of various professionals including a picture book author, an academic researcher, a primary school teacher, a school librarian and two public librarians. Working in a partnership with other professionals, participant librarians had a unique opportunity to develop expertises on reading education as a creator of a program rather than as a deliverer.

Analysis on Ego State Types of Public Librarians by Ego-gram in Korea (이고그램을 이용한 공공도서관 사서의 자아 상태 유형 분석)

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the functional ego state of public librarians who should take a role of an information intermediary for children and young adults through the ego-gram which is suggested in transactional analysis theory and review their limit and feasibility as instructors. As a result of analysis, the whole ego state type of public librarians is founded to be N-type(Nightingale type) like NP-AC-A-CP-FC. The characteristics of this type can be interpreted as 'to show the tendency of self-denial in spite of their dedication.' So, the public librarians have to do their best to develop A(Adult), CP(Critical Parent) and FC(Free Child) ego state to take the requirements and behaviors of children and young adults in nurturing attitudes and enhance their autonomy and creativity through active mutual interaction. Improving A and FC is also very helpful to decrease their stress and raise their job satisfaction.
