  • This study was carried out to develop a short term hardening method of tree seedlings of Rhus chinensis Mill., Evodia daniellii Hemsley and Parthenocissus tricuspidata(Sieb. et Zucc.) Planck for afforestation on a concave and a crack of cut-rock slope. The seedlings were grown in a cylinder shaped pot made of polyvinyl net with the soil media of peatmoss, vermiculite, clay, compost, fertilizer, and absorbant(40:25:19:15:1:0.1, v:v). They were cultivated in a greenhouse for four months and in field condition for two months. During the last three months of the growing period the seedlings were hardened by periodic desiccation and irrigation in 4 to 10 days interval. The hardened seedlings showed lower leaf water potential, higher leaf osmotic pressure, and lower T/R ratio than those before the hardening. The hardened seedlings survived well on the soil medium in the concave of cut-rock slope.

  • The behavior of earth retention wall installed in cut slope is different from the behavior of retention wall applied in urban excavation. In order to establish the design method of anchored retention walls in cut slope, the behavior of anchored retention wall can be investigated and checked in detail. In this study, the behavior of anchored retention wall was investigated by instrumentation installed in cut slope for an apartment construction stabilized by a row of piles. The horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall was larger than the displacement of slope soil behind the wall at the early stage of excavation. As the excavation depth became deeper, the horizontal displacement of slope soil was larger than the displacement of anchored retention wall. It means that the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall due to excavation is restrained by soldier pile stiffness and jacking force of anchor. Jacking force of anchor was mainly influenced in the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall. The displacements of anchored retention wall and slope soil were affected mainly by an rainfall infiltrated from the ground surface. Meanwhile, the horizontal displacement of anchored retention wall with slope backside was about 2-6 times larger than the displacement of anchored retention wall with horizontal backside of excavation.

  • There are many slopes generally developed by excavation and cut slope with small steps on massive slopes of roads. Especially these cut slopes which excavating around fault fracture zone need a reinforcement technology in order to ensure safety. In the case of slope excavation, it is difficult to use the existing slope support at fracture zone because of geological characteristics. Especially the factor of safety decreases significantly due to the movement of blocks in bed rocks and the expansion of interspace of discontinuous planes in fractured zones caused by excavation. Thus an efficient reinforcement technique in accordance with geological properties of fracture zones needs to be developed because the existing slope support has a restricted application. Therefore it is necessary to develop the specialized rock bolt technique in order to ensure an efficient factor of safety for anomalous fracture zones in slopes and tunnels. The purpose of this study is to develop newly improved rock bolt to increase a supporting effect of the swellex bolt method used recently as a friction type in fracture zones.

  • Hundreds of rock slopes are constructed along the road, highway and railroad in mountainous Kangwon province and managed by each authorities concerned. It is practically not possible to carry out detailed rock slope investigation owing to the tremendous number of slopes and budgetary limit. Therefore, it is reasonable to perform a step-by-step investigation consisted of basic and detailed survey program and practical rock slope hazard assesment method for person in charge is strongly required. Through the development and application of KSMR (Korean Slope Mass Rating), it was found that KSMR could be practically used as an alternative of SMR though the number of inputs were reduced. In addition, the difference of hazard assessment between KSMR and experts decreased in case of considering the height of slope.

  • As Korea is a mountaneous country, many cut slopes are formed along the highways and in housing projects, by cutting through the layers which are composed of shallow soil depth and the underlying hard layers with different degrees of weathering. Such slopes are often foiled by heavy rainfall, and thus its effects on the slope instability are described in detail in. this paper. The importance of discontinuties on the slope stability as well as the effects of rainfall is emphasized for high quality design of cut slopes.

  • A quarry with 105 m height large cut slope was analyzed. Beside RMR and SMR methods, FLAC2D were adopted to analyze slope stability. As a result, slope of andesite had a possibility of failure. Wet slope showed low safety factor. Soil nailing was recommended to solve it. Since safety factor of slope largely depend on underground level, investigation for it seemed necessary.

  • The cracks induced by hydraulic rock splitting technique are formed in the direction parallel to the free plane, which is perpendicular to the minimum principal stress of the ground, or is affected by the pre-existing microcracks. In this study, the hydraulic rock splitting experiments were conducted in which the guide slot was engraved in the direction parallel to the borehole axis on the biotite granite slope, and the hydraulic pressure was injected through the double packer pressure and interval section. The test results show that the cracks along with the guide slots were induced either by the double packer pressurization or the injection of hydraulic pressure into interval section, some cracks extended across the boreholes. Therefore, the hydraulic rock splitting test is expected to control efficiently the induced cracks if the guide slots are engraved in the direction of splitting and a big flow rate is applied.

  • We applied a slope-stability analysis method, considering infiltration by rainfall, to the construction site where an express highway is being extended. Slope stability analysis that considers infiltration by rainfall can be classified into three methods: a method that considers the downward velocity of the wetting front, a method that considers the upward velocity of the groundwater level, and a method that considers both of these factors. The results of slope stability analysis using $Bishop^{\circ}{\Phi}s$ simplified method indicate that the safety factor due to the downward velocity of the wetting front decreases more rapidly than that due to the upward velocity of the groundwater level. For the third of the above methods, the safety factor decreases more rapidly than for the other two methods. Therefore, slope stability during rainfall should be analyzed with consideration of both the downward velocity of the wetting front and the upward velocity of the groundwater level.

  • This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the physical and mechanical properties of soil-slope failure of Okcheon metamorphic zone. Soil samples were collected from 35 collapsed and uncollapsed artificial slopes along national roads. A series of laboratory experiments was carried out to examine physical and mechanical properties of soils and rocks. The results show that failure slopes have weakness of failure at 0.75 of AMI or higher, 32% of liquid limit or higher, and 31% of saturated moisture content or higher. The plastic index of failure slopes is correlated to wet density and saturated density. It turned out that failure could easily happen according to a high plastic index even if the void ratio was low. The greater the contents of bigger-sized soil, i.e. contents of sands and gravels rather than of clays, is the greater the chance to fail at the slope.
