  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of science writing activities on high school students' scientific thinking ability in Life Science I class. In order to do this, 6 teaching-learning materials dealing with science writing and an evaluation tool for scientific thinking ability were developed. And the subjects were 224 high school students of 6 classes. As a result of applying science writing activities in Life Science I class, the students' scientific thinking ability was improved. And students' inductive/deductive/critical/creative thinking ability was improved. In addition, in the most of the evaluation criteria of scientific thinking ability, the scores of posttest were higher than those of pretest. The number of students to show higher performance levels was increased. Therefore, science writing activities have positive effect on high school students' scientific thinking ability. This study provides some implications for teaching science writing activities to develop students' scientific thinking ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the evaluation criteria for students' research reports on online science inquiry problems that promote thinking abilities. The steps of developing the evaluation criteria are as follows; First, based on previous study results and literature review, the evaluation categories of the science inquiry contents were determined: 1) knowledge, 2) logical and analytical thinking, 3) critical thinking, 4) science process skills, 5) problem-solving, and 6) creative thinking. Second, evaluation criteria are developed according to the following steps: 1) define each category, 2) identify sub-category, 3) develop evaluation criteria for all categories that could serve as guidelines in the development of scoring rubrics, and 4) expert validation processes were performed. Finally, the usability test for these evaluation categories and criteria were done by being applied to the development of real scoring rubrics for 24 problems included in e-learning contents. Then the users' feedbacks were filed and the implications of this study were discussed.

  • The 2015 revised national curriculum includes SW courses to improve computational thinking, and a variety of physical computing tools for learning are on sale for use in education. The purpose of this study is to provide a basis for selecting physical computing tool for learning suitable for learning situations and learning purposes, and to provide a reasonable basis for judging the choice of tools in the field. Delphi survey method was used as a reference method for developing evaluation criteria through 25 expert panels. As a result, the criterion of evaluation of the learning tool composed of 40 essential and 11 selection criteria for 7 domains was presented. In addition, the evaluation results of five kinds of learning tools commercialized through the evaluation criteria of the learning tool were analyzed. The evaluation criteria for the learning tools developed through this study are expected to help teachers select rational learning tools and help learning tool developers develop learning tools.

  • The demands of computer science education for non-majors in higher education is increasing but relevant evaluation tools for the students' computational artifacts are lack. This research aims to develop a scoring rubric to assess student's computational artifacts in non-major programming course at Computational Thinking point of view. The rubric was developed based on 'CT Practice Design Pattern' as a framework. The rubric consists of 'domain, skills, evaluation, evaluating resources, and scales'. Domains are 'Design of abstract model', 'Design and application of creative artifacts', and 'Analysis of the artifacts'. Experts reviewed the rubric to ensure contents validity. The rubric is resulted in reliable for consistency. This rubric can be revised and applied to application environment accordingly.

  • The Goal of SW education is to cultivate creative and convergent human resources with computational thinking ability. The content and methods of SW education are diverse, and it is difficult for the students to properly evaluate what they have learned. In order to appropriately evaluate the learning contents, SW education evaluations should be able to easily evaluate the core content of the SW education. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic framework that can be used to develop evaluation factors to evaluate the effectiveness of SW education in elementary and secondary schools. We conducted a literature review, a field suitability review through FGI, an expert consultation, and a Delphi survey. As a result, the metrics of the cognitive domain were developed with 17 keywords in three categories: Computational Materials & Outputs (CMO), Computational Concepts (CC), and Computational Practices (CP). Also, metrics of the affective domain were developed with 13 sub-areas in four categories: value, attitude, computational thinking efficacy, and interest. The SW education evaluation factors developed in this study can be used as a framework to develop the evaluation contents in accordance with the contents of education.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data that can be used in a reasonable assessment of the learning outcomes of STEAM. It presented a learning outcome evaluation method, relative weights of key competencies standard that a learner should cultivate. For this study, a pairwise comparison questionnaire about the key competencies was conducted on the STEAM professionals, and AHP was applied to analyze the priority of main factors of key competencies. The results of this study are as follows. First, the importance of capabilities of convergence accomplishment and capabilities of convergent cognition, in the first layer of key competencies, were 39.4% and 36.8%, respectively. In the education evaluation of the STEAM, capabilities of convergence accomplishment and capabilities of convergent cognition showed similar level of importance, and were considered more important factor than capabilities of convergence attitude (23.8%). Second, the relative importance of capabilities of problem solving (20.0%) was highest in the second layer of key competencies, and followed by capabilities of creative thinking (18.3%), responsibility (15.3%), and understanding convergence knowledge (11.0%). Third, it will be a foundation of a competency evaluation, which reasonably evaluates, based on the relative weights, whether to accomplish educational objectives of the STEAM program In addition, this results is expected to become a guide to develop an education program that can improve the teaching and learning process and raise the learning outcome, as well as an education evaluation of the STEAM.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop picture testing instrument for measuring children's causal reasoning ability on events that can occur in daily life. The measurement instrument contains three domain of human development; haman behavior domain, human psychology domain, and natural/physical domain. Through this study, researchers designed a concept model based on theoretical framework and prior studies and investigated the reliability and validity of the measurement instrument which was developed in accordance with the concept model. For the empirical validation research, a pretest was conducted to 336 elementary school students in grade 2 to 4 in Seoul. Considering reliability and validity of the developed measurement instrument and factor loadings, researchers sorted out 18 questions. And then 18 question test and KICE Critical Thinking Ability Test was conducted to 509 elementary school students in grade 1 to 4 in Seoul. According to the result of the tests, the researchers sorted out final 12 questions. The Cronbach's alpha, reliability of the children's causal reasoning ability test consisted of the final 12 question, was significant as .72. Also, the result of exploratory factor analysis showed that factors of this test were haman behavior domain, human psychology domain, and natural/physical domain. Moreover, the correlation between the KEDI Reasoning Ability Test(2003) scores and the scores of the test developed in the current study was significant as .55. Finally, the result of the analysis about children's grade differences, the development by discrepancy of age was significant in total points and that of each domain. The children's causal reasoning ability test developed by this study can be useful not only for the evaluation of children's thinking ability but also for screening of the handicapped children in thinking ability development.
