  • Sap flow in mulberry (Morus species) trees was observed for one month from mid-March in 1981, 1982 and 1990. The results were : 1. Sap flow at 20cm soil depth occurred on April 8, 1981 at 10.1$^{\circ}C$, on April 2, 1982 at 8.3$^{\circ}C$ and March 25, 1990 at 8.7$^{\circ}C$. The data showed a range of 1.8$^{\circ}C$ and 15 days. 2. Water content of the wood decreased with decreasing soil temperature under 8$^{\circ}C$, whereas water content of the cortex remained constant or increased. Water may move form wood to cortex when it was insufficient in cortex. 3. Sap flow at 20cm soil depth occurred when accumulated soil temperature after March 1 about 180$^{\circ}C$.

  • Isolation and pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. from mulberry shoot rot and severity of diseases which were known as bacterial blight were examined on four mulberry varieties in Suwon, Kongju and Chuncheon, A symptom of mulberry shoot rot was initiated long brown spot on young leaves and shoots. It was developed into dark brown spot and produced white mycelia and spores on the diseased symptoms. A symptom of bacterial blight showed leaf rolling and water soaking spot and produced bacterial ooze on leaf and shoot However later stage of upper two types of symptom was hardly distinguished. Severities of shoot rot and bacterial blight were 7.5% and 4.4% in Suwon, respectively. Isolation of Fusarium spp. on shoot rot symptoms was highter than that on bacterial blight symptoms, but isolation of Pseudomonas spp. was higher on bacterial blight symptoms. Trends of pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were similar to inoculation works, and isolations of pathogenic Fusarium spp. from center of symptom was higher than that from 30cm of symptom of all samples in three cultivation areas. Disease severities of shoot rot on variety of Kaeryangppong were 13.9%, 15.9% and 17.2% in Suwon, Kongju and Chuncheon, respectively. However variety of Cheongolppong was highly resistant to shoot rot disease in three cultivation areas.

  • Mulberry cuttings from shoots of Shinkwangppong(Morus bombycis koidz.) had been callused in vermiculite separately at 15, 20, 25 and 30$^{\circ}C$ for 15 days before transplanting them in greenhouse to make clear the effect of temperature on root formation and growth is as follow. The buds of cuttings started sprouting in 4 and 6 days of callusing at 30 and 25$^{\circ}C$, respectively, reaching 100% budding in 10 and 15 days of callusing. Budding was delayed, however, at low temperature, showing 86% and 92% at 15 and 20$^{\circ}C$, respectively, in 15 days. Rooting from the cuttings was also accelerated at high temperature, showing 97-100% rooting at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$, in 15 days of callusing but no more than 93% at low temperature even in 35 days. Although high temperature increased root number and length after 15 days in callusing, no differences showed in the number and the weight at more than 20$^{\circ}C$ in 35 days of cuttings.

  • Various concentrations of ${\alpha}$-naphthalence acetic acid(NAA) as a root-promoting substance were tested in hardwood cutting of the mulberry(Morus bombycis Koidz., cultivar : Shinkwangppong) to make clear the callusing effect on the budding and root growth. Budding and shoot growth of cuttings were delayed at high concentrations of NAA within 10 days of callusing. Especially more severe is it at higher than 50ppm. More than 93% of them, however, budded in two weeks when callused at less than 100ppm NAA. Although rooting was accelerated at high concentration of NAA from the bigining of cutting, after that, rooting percentage increased to reach 100% in 35 days of cutting in any concentration except 150ppm with relatively low rooting. Root growth was utmostly accelerated at 50ppm NAA to show the highest amount in number, length and weight of roots per cutting although high concentration of it decreased mean root length.

  • Studies on the harvest methods for the branch-rearing in autumn are as follows. (1) It turned out to be the best method in the early autumn to thin one to two of the normal branches or the dwarf ones, or pick off some of leaves for the yields, according to the rearing scale. (2) For the rearing of the silkworm larvae at 4th instar, it is recommendable to apply one of the following harvest methods, such as the thinning of dwarf branches, the thinning of some branches, intermediate cutting, and the pick-of of the leaves at low part of mulberry in the regards io the quality of leaves and the labour conditions, and no effects on the harvest. (3) For the rearing of the larvae at 5th instar, it is most practical to adapt one of the yield methods which can produce good harvest with less labours. That is, the pruning. of the middle branches should be gradually made from a part of the mulberry fold. (4) When it is carried out to pick of the leaves on the branches which was left after the middle-pruning harvest in autumn or late, easy and less labours' harvest method of rough picking may be applied in the both of the mulberry pruned in summer or autumn.

  • Mulberry dwarf, paulownia witches' broom, jujube witches' broom, and sumach witches' broom are known to be associated with mycoplamalike organisms(MLO) in Korea. Simple microscopic detection of MLO infection in these plants was attempted. Periwinkle plant was also tested. Application of $0.2\%\;and\;0.4\%$ solution of Dienes' stain gave diagnoatic value for MLO-induced diseases of periwinkle and mulberry. Among the various plant parts examined, young herbaceous stem just below the apical part gave the best result. Density of staining reaction was proportional to disease severity. Longitudial sections were superior to transverse sections in confirming MLO infection by staining. Light source without blue filter was useful for increasing the color contrast between sieve tube and xylem vessel and for eliminating misinterpretation. Paulownia, jujube, and sumach samples gave no clear difference in staining reaction between healthy and diseased sections even when various modifications of Dienes' staining procedure were tried.

  • This study was carried out to understand the seasonal changes in mineral contents of mulberry trees. The shoot barks and the leaves of three mulberry varieties(Kaeryangppong, Shinilppon, Yongcheonppong) were analyzed every 10 days during the year from January to December of 1993, Phosphorus content of the shoot barks and leaves gradually decreased until October in three varieties and increased thereafter. Especially, that of Yongcheonppong decreased 0.18% from 1.33% in January to 1.15% in October. Potassium content of the shoot barks increased 0.7~1.1% from April to August but decreased 0.7~0.9% during winter. That of leaves increased from May to October. Magnesium content of the shoot barks increased until August but decreased after then. And it increased again after October. That of the leaves decreased from May to October. Calcium content of the shoot barks decreased 0.4~0.6% from January to September but increased 0.1~0.4% from October. That of the leaves increased from May to October.

  • Flower buds of the mulberry(Morus alba L., Morus bombycis Koidz.) were cultured under different conditions such as basal media, and various concentrations of plant growth substances. Effects of the culture conditions on growth of the buds and organ regeneration were investigated and the result obtained are as follows: Murashige and Skoog(M.S.) medium was more effective on budding and growth of female(Keomseolppong) and male(Kaeryangppong) flower buds isolated directly from branches, compared to Greshoff & Doy(G.D.) and Wolter & Skog(W.S.) media. The growth of the female buds was promoted at higher concetration of benzyl amino purine(BAP) i.e., 2.0ppm. The female and male buds cultured after cuuting for seven days showed better growth than those without cutting treatment. The females and the males bloomed to form healthy stigmas and anthers, respectively, when cultured on M.S. media containing high Kinetin with low concentration of indole acetic acid(IAA).
