  • In this paper, 3-D frame design using refined plastic-hinge analysis accounting for local buckling is developed. This analysis accounts for material and geometric nonlinearities of the structural system and its component members. Moreover, the problem associated with conventional refined plastic-hinge analyses, which do not consider the degradation of the flexural strength caused by local buckling, is overcome. Efficient ways of assessing steel frame behavior including gradual yielding associated with residual stresses and flexure, second-order effect, and geometric imperfections are presented. In this study, a model consisting of the width-thickness ratio is used to account for local buckling. The proposed analysis is verified by the comparison of the LRFD results.

  • In order to present the geometrically nonlinear F.E. formulation of space frames, two beam/column elements including the effects of transverse shear deformation and bending stretching coupling are developed. In the case of the first element (Finite segment method), the tangent stiffness matrices are derived by directly integrating the equilibrium equations, whereas in the case of the second element (Finite element method) elastic and geometric stiffness matrices are calculated by using the hermitian polynomials including shear deformation effect as the shape function. Both elements possess the usual twelve degrees of freedom. Also, the bowing function including shear deformation effects is obtained in order to account for the effect of shortening of member chord length due to the bending and torsional behavior. Numerical results are presented for the selected test problems which demonstrate that both elements represent reliable and highly accurate tools.

  • A solution strategy for geometric non-linear analysis for the plane frame structures subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this strategy can find postbuckling configuration such as snap-through and turning-back phenomena which cannot be easily found by the conventional load and displacement incrementation scheme. In the case of the analysis of the framed structure subjected to circulatory non-conservative forces, the total tangent stiffness matrix becomes unsymmetric and when calculating the incremental load and unbalanced load vector components, the direction change of the non-conservative forces is considered. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present strategy, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likly to occur in practical framed structures, are given and discussed.

  • The effect of end restraints for adjoining members is the different variables influencing the column ultimate strength and the behavior. The propose of this study is to analyze eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns with the end restraind effect having rectangular cross-section and general boundary conditions. Accordingly, this investigation are to construct a typical analytical model of the reinforced concrete columns with general end boundary conditions. The mechanical components of the analytical model are to be rationally defined the actual behavior as possible, and the different variables influencing the behavior and the ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete columns are investigated by using a parametric study.

  • In order to design rigid zone area of frame structures, it is important to predict the direction change of internal stresses according to the bending moment acting on the joint region. In this study, it was examined whether current highway bridge design standards are useful to design different types of rigid joints having a various haunch shapes. In addition, stress distributions of inside of various rigid joints were inspected using the linear elastic finite element analysis. Based on the results of finite element analysis, the strut-tie models to design rigid joints are proposed. Suggested by this study, the strut-tie models have a same level of accuracy to a linear elastic finite element analysis. The proposed strut-tie models will be useful to design reinforcement details of rigid joints having a various haunch types.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the computer software for the nonlinear analysis of R/C frame structure under static loads. For this purpose, strain-rate dependant material model and physical element model considering both flexural and shear deformation are adopted and they are connected with 'TWO-D'which is commerical software for elastic structural analysis. The analytical results using the developed software are compared to the experiment results and they are generally satisfactory.

  • A reliability analysis model for the frame structure which grafts the discretized ideal plastic method to the stochastic finite element method is introduced. The proposed method simmulates realistically the sequencial occurrence of plastic hinges and yields the probability of failure directly from the geometrical and material properties of a frame structure. The presented method can also take into account the uncertainties inherent in loads and resisten- ces through the stochastic finite element technique. The analysis results are compared with those of the Monte Carlo Simmulation, the Bound Theory, and the fs-unzipping method, and show good agreement.

  • An improved method for evaluating effective buckling lengths of beam-column members in plane frames is newly proposed based on system inelastic buckling analysis. To this end, the tangent stiffness matrix of be am-column elements is first calculated using stability functions and then the inelastic buckling analysis method is presented. The scheme for determining effective length of individual members is also addressed. Design examples and numerical results ?uc presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, the stress and strain characteristics of a helmet shell structure have been analyzed by using the finite element method and Taguchi's design method as functions of the material properties, the thickness of a helmet, the thickness and the number of a bead frame. The optimized design of the helmets for a firefighter and a gas worker is very important for increasing the strength safety and an impact energy absorption capacity of a helmet shell due to an impulsive external force. Thus, the optimized design data of the helmet indicated that the uniform thickness of a helmet shell may be reduced for reducing the total weight of a helmet and increasing the strain energy absorption rate, but the thickness and the number of a bead frame would be increased for increasing the impact strength of the helmet.
