  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

  • The advanced development in many fields of engineering and science has caused much interests and demands for crashworthiness and non-linear dynamic transient analysis of structure response. Crash and impact problems have a dominant characteristic of large deformation with material plasticity for short time scales. The structural material shows strain rate-dependent behaviors in those cases. Conventional rate-independent constitutive equations used in the general purposed finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate-dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material is developed. The plastic stretch rate is modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and its density so that there is neither yielding condition, nor loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule is also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation are determined by experimental data of mild steel, and the constitutive equation is applied to uniaxile tension loading.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the change in the statical behavior and the ultimate capacity of steel cable-stayed bridges after cable failure. Cable failure can occur due to fire, direct vehicle clash accidents, cable or anchorage fatigue, and so on. Moreover, the cable may be temporarily disconnected during cable replacement work. When cable failure occurs, the load, that was supported by the broken cable is first transferred to another cable. Then the structural state changes due to the interaction between the girder, mast, and cables. Moreover, it can be predicted that the ultimate capacity will decrease after cable failure, because of the loss of the support system. In this study, the analysis method is suggested to find the new equilibrium state after cable failure based on the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the ultimate analysis method is also suggested to analyze the ultimate behavior of live loads after cable failure. For a more rational analysis, a three-step analysis procedure is suggested and used, which consisted of initial shape analysis, cable failure analysis, and live load analysis. Using this analysis method, an analytical study was performed to investigate the changes in the structural state and ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges.

  • Using the Schwarzschild's linear programming technique, we obtained the general solutions of the collisionless Bolzmann equation describing the spherical galaxy in dynamical equilibrium. From this calculation we have confirmed the existence of isotropic spherical galaxies obeying a de Vaucouleurs'law which includes a dark halo. The flattening profile of the velocity dispersion curve seen in the elliptical galaxies can be explained as the increase of mass to light ratio in this dark matter. The space density distribution of this dark matter shows that the core radius of the dark matter is smaller than the effective radius of the galaxy.

  • Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

  • In this study, to analyze the impulsive response of a helmet, a simple vibration model is presented. Based upon the experimental data and the simulation results, an equivalent one degree of freedom vibrational system is adapted, and transient impulsive responses are analysed to investigate the influence of engineering parameters such as damping, natural frequency, and impact velocity on the impulsive response of the helmet. Maximum gravitational acceleration reduces as the damping factor value increases. When the damping factor value is around 0.6 or larger, the maximum acceleration does not change. With respect to the natural frequency and the impact velocity, it increases linearly. The relationship between head injury criterion(HIC) and maximum gravitational acceleration is also presented. The scheme of this study is expected to be utilized to economize the design process of high quality helmets.

  • Presently, the general seismic fragility evaluation method for a bridge system composed of member elements with different nonlinear behaviors against strong earthquakes has been to evaluate at the element-level. This study aims to develop a system-level seismic fragility evaluation method that represents a structural system. Because the seismic behavior of bridges is generally divided into transverse and longitudinal directions, this study evaluated the system-level seismic fragility in both directions separately. The element-level seismic fragility evaluation in the longitudinal direction was performed for piers, bridge bearings, pounding, abutments, and unseating. Because pounding, abutment, and unseating do not affect the transverse directional damages, the element-level seismic fragility evaluation was limited to piers and bridge bearings. Seismic analysis using nonlinear models of various structural members was performed using the OpenSEES program. System-level seismic fragility was evaluated assuming that damage between element-levels was serially connected. Pier damage was identified to have a dominant effect on system-level seismic fragility than other element-level damages. In other words, the most vulnerable element-level seismic fragility has the most dominant effect on the system-level seismic fragility.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the formal characteristics of , which has been screened on Netflix since 2018. This film can be considered an interactive narrative because it gives viewers the opportunity to select their own narrative forks which lead to various endings. However, it also limits viewers' freedom of interactions in many ways, resulting in the pessimistic narrative world of series. In this contradictory situation, the conflict between the user's selectability and the narrator's authoriality emerges. And this collision gives rise to a complex form in which nonlinear interactive and linear narrative forms blend together. It can be understood as a form of self-reflection, such as forms of the metalepsis and breaking the fourth wall. In this paper, this particular form will be regarded as a sort of reflexive intermediality, i. e. the form for media reflexion.

  • There are differences in seismic behavior between non-skewed bridges and skewed bridges due to in-plane rotations caused by pounding between the skewed deck and its abutments during strong earthquake. Many advances have been made in developing design codes and guidelines for dynamic analyses of non-skewed bridges. However, there remain significant uncertainties with regard to the structural response of skewed bridges caused by unusual seismic response characteristics. The purpose of this study is performing non-linear time history analysis of the bridges using abutment-soil interaction model considering pounding between the skewed deck and its abutments, and analyzing global seismic behavior characteristics of the skewed bridges to assess the possibility of unseating. Refined bridge model with abutment back fill, shear key and elastomeric bearing was developed using non-linear spring element. In order to evaluate the amplification of longitudinal and transverse displacement response, non-linear time history analysis was performed for single span bridges. Far-fault and near-fault ground motions were used as input ground motions. According to each parameter, seismic behavior of skewed bridges was evaluated.
