  • It is necessary to predict the deformation and stresses on soils to establish the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of geomaterials at various strain levels. Especially, a need exists to establish the pre-failure nonlinear characteristic of cemented granular geomaterials used in road constructions. In this paper, therefore, conventional granular soils were mixed with various cementing materials, such as cement and fly ash from coal combustion by-products. Then, the normalized nonlinear behavior of cemented geomaterials was assessed using unconfined compression test. In addition, various constitutive models of soils were evaluated for estimating pre-failure non-linear behavior of cemented geomaterials from the test results.

  • Line source method of borehole system assumes the entire surrounding medium is uniform. However, thermal properties of grouting region are considerably different from those of surrounding soil. In this study we investigate the effect of grouting materials on the solution of line source method with the aid of numerical analysis. This numerical model generates the temperature of borehole fluid with which line source solution can be obtained. Then this solution can be compared with input condition of numerical model. The results of this comparison show that thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance of line source solution are approximately 86% and 91% of the input condition of numerical model. Chart method is developed in this study to find the numerical input conditions (thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance) from the line source solution. Thermal response test of test borehole is conducted, the results of which are approximately consistent with the Chart method. Thermal property changes of grouting materials on the line source solution are also examined.

  • In this study, we applied the wave generation method by relaxation method to the SWASH model, which is a non - hydrostatic numerical model, for stable and accurate wave generation of linear and nonlinear waves. To validate the relaxation wave generation method, we were simulated various wave, including the linear wave and nonliner wave and compared with analytical solution. As a result, the incident wave was successfully generated and propagated in all cases from Stokes waves to cnoidal wave. Also, we were confirmed that the wave height and the waveform were in good agreement with the analytical solution.

  • In this paper, a study of damage detection for 2-Dimensional Truss Structures using the parametric projection filter theorr is presented. Many researchers are interested in inverse problem and one of solution procedures for inverse problems that are very effective is the approach using the filtering algorithm in conjunction with numerical solution methods. In filtering algorithm, the Kalman filtering algorithm is well known and have been applied to many kind of inverse problems. In this paper, the Parametric projection filtering in conjunction with structural analysis is applied to the identification of damages in 2-D truss structures. The natural frequency and modes of damaged truss model are adopted as the measurement data. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified through the numerical examples.

  • A nonlinear mathematical model of longitudinal combustion instability appropriate for ramjets and augmenters was developed based on modal analysis. The model was limited to a two-mode formulation. The associated differential equations were solved both analytically and numerically. The two-mode nonlinear model is capable of predicting the bootstrapping effect which characterizes nonlinear velocity-sensitive combustion response. Also, parametric studies were performed.

  • In this study, a nonlinear 2 degree of freedom mathematical model has been developed for impact analysis of the nose landing gear of a light aircraft which is composed of an wheel & tire, an Oleo-pneumatic shock strut and the castering wheel fork for the differential braking steering, and then the response of impact is computed using a numerical method. The mathematical model of a nose landing gear contains nonlinear characteristics which are an impact load - deflection property of a tire and internally frictional forces between an inner surface of an upper cylinder and a bearing of a lower rod due to side forces like the declined angle of strut, the moment due to an wheel fork, the side drag due to a steering and it is computed using the 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. The comparison process between analytical results and experimental results of the other proven nose landing gear is carried out to verify the mathematical model.

  • This paper presents a beam element capable of conducting material and geometric nonlinear analysis for applications requiring the ultimate behavioral analysis of structures with composite cross-sections. The element formulation is based on co-rotational kinematics to simulate geometrically nonlinear behaviors, and it uses the fiber section method to calculate the stiffness and internal forces of the element. The proposed element was implemented using an in-house numerical program in which an arc-length method was adopted to trace severe nonlinear responses(such as snap-through or snapback), as well as ductile behavior after the peak load. To verify the proposed method of element formulation and the accuracy of the program that was used to employ the element, several numerical studies were conducted and the results from these numerical models were compared with those of three-dimensional continuum models and previous studies, to demonstrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the element. Additionally, by evaluating an example case of a frame structure with a composite member, the effects of differences between composite material properties such as the elastic modulus ratio and strength ratio were analyzed. It was found that increasing the elastic modulus of the external layer of a composite cross-section caused quasi-brittle behavior, while similar responses of the composite structure to those of homogeneous and linear materials were shown to increase the yield strength of the external layer.

  • A numerical method for simulations of inviscid incompressible flow fields around a ship advancing on the free surface is developed. A body fitted coordinate system, generated by numerically solving elliptic type partial differential equations is used to conform the ship and free surface configurations. Three dimensional Euler equations transformed to the non-staggered body fitted coordinate system are discretised by finite difference method. Time and spatial derivatives are discretised by forward and centered differencings, respectively, and artificial dissipations are added to discretised convection terms for improvements of numerical stability. At each time steps, free surface elevations are recomputed to satisfy nonlinear free surface conditions. Poisson equations for pressure field are solved iteratively and the velocity field for next time step is extrapolated. To verify the developed numerical method, flow fields around a Wigley model are simulated(Fn=0.250-0.408) and compared with experimental data to show good agreements.

  • This paper presents modelling approaches for the global and distortional buckling of cold-formed built-up steel sections using the finite element software packages, ANSYS and ABAQUS. Thin thickness of the cold-formed steel causes nonlinear behaviour due to local and distortional buckling, thus careful consideration is required in modelling for numerical analysis. Implicit static modelling using ANSYS provides unstable numerical results as the load approaches the limit point but explicit dyamic modelling with ABAQUS is able to display the behaviour even in post-buckling range. Meanwhile, axial load capacities obtained from the numerical analysis show higher values than the experimental axial capacities, due to eccentricity during the test. Axial capacities of the cold-formed steel obtained through numerical analysis requires reduction factor, and this paper suggests 0.88 for the factor.

  • A second-order upwind scheme is used to investigate the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea and the predicted results are compared with the field data and results of a first-order upwind scheme. In the numerical model, the governing equations solved by the finite difference scheme are the linear shallow-water equations in deep water and nonlinear shallow-water equations in shallow water. The target events are 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami and 1993 Hokkaido Nansei Oki Tsunami. The predicted results represent reasonably well the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea. And, the results of simulation are used for the design of inundation map.
