  • A tubular member with through-gusset plate is often used to transmit axial compression in an electric transmission towers. In current code, the strength of tubular member is evaluated with an effective length factor k=0.9 without considering the deformation of boundary element. A buckling strength of member with end gusset plate is affected by stiffness ratio($\beta$) and the length ratio(G) between main tubular member and end gusset plate. In this study theoretical mechanism based on the elastic buckling behavior was investigated, and finite element analysis was performed to propose a formula for the buckling strength and effective length factor of tubular member in elsatic and inelastic ranges.

  • In this study, authors attempted to determine the bond behavior characteristics to utilize Grid typed CFRP reinforcement as an alternative to steel rebar used as concrete reinforcement. Since it is difficult to understand the influence of the transverse grid length of the Grid typed CFRP reinforcement in the existing numerical analysis proposal for bond behavior, a nonlinear 3D model was created and finite element analysis was performed. To perform the analysis, the analysis was conducted by inputting a nonlinear material model and modeling the bond interface characteristics between the Grid typed CFRP reinforcement and concrete and comparing them with the actual direct pull-out test results. The bond behavior characteristics of the Grid typed CFRP reinforcement were found to be very dominated by the factors of the transverse grid, and showed a tendency to continuously increase load.

  • Design provisions for the development length of headed bars in ACI 318-08 include concrete compressive strength and yield strength of headed bars as design parameters but do not consider the effects of transvers reinforcement. In addition, they have very strict limitation for clear spacing and material strengths because these provisions were developed based on limited tests. In this study, splice tests using SD600 headed bars with $2d_b$ clear spacing and transverse reinforcement were conducted. Test results show that unconfined specimens failed due to prying action and bottom cover concrete prematurely spalled. The contribution of head bearing on the anchorage strength is only 15% on average implying that unconfined specimens failed before the head bearing was not sufficiently developed. Confined specimens with stirrups placed along whole splice length have enhanced strengths in bearing as well as bond because the stirrups prevented prying action and improved bond capacity. Bond failure occurred in locally confined specimens where stirrups were placed only at the ends of splice length. The stirrups at ends of splice lengths can prevent prying action but the bond capacity did not increase. From regression analysis of test results, an equation to predict anchorage strength of headed bars was developed. The proposed equation consists of bond and bearing contributions and includes transverse reinforcement index. The average ratio of tests to predictions is 1.0 with coefficient of variation of 6%.

  • Perpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the measuring method in radius of eyeglasses lens curvature by using keratometer in noncontact method. Methods: A trial lens for vision test in diopter range from -9.00 D to -11.50 D were attached in front part of keratometer, after that we set eyeglasses lens at the place where eyeglasses lens is apart about 25 cm from front position of keratometer. We measured the radius of curvature from observation of clear mire image while the position of eyeglasses lens is changed in a small quantity. After that, we made some formulas for compensation of radius of curvature by using spherometer. Results: The radius of curvature was successfully measured by keratometer with trial lens in front part of it. The measured radius of curvature was changed to compensation value using spherometer data, and the 5 kind of linear equation to make compensation value was made. Any kind of lenses measured by using keratometer that trial lens was attached in front part of it, after that it was confirmed that the result of calculation from line equation is exact in error ratio below 3.5%. Conclusions: It was confirmed that radius of eyeglasses lens curvature can be measured by using keratometer by noncontact method, and the accuracy is higher than "lens measure".

  • A model for the effective moment of inertia $I_{\epsilon}$ as expressed in Branson's equation, in which reduction of the flexural rigidity of RC beams due to cracking are aptly taken into accoun,t is presented. However, KCI Code isn`t considered tension stiffening as it is in debonding of reinforcing bar. Therefore, this equation need to set up suitable to our design Code. The experimental work consisted of casting and testing a total of 6 simply supported reinforced concrete beams and a total of 4 continuos reinforced concrete beams under two point concentrated loads. Main parameters are concrete strength, coverage, bond between concrete and reinforcing bars, are known as have an effect on deflection and tension stiffening. Every test beams had the same $250{\times}350$mm rectangular section, with a simply supported clear span of 4,400 mm and a continuos clear span of 6,500 mm. Comparison of the test results with values obtained using the KCI Code equation of the effective moment of inertia showed a noticeable difference.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse and compare experimentally flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with CFRP plates by different methods, and finally suggest the evaluation equations of flexural capacity of RC beams with the aim of application of prestressed CFRP strengthening. The experimental parameters are compressive strength, reinforcement ratio, prestressing level and strengthening methods. The non-prestressed specimens failed on account of separation of the plates from the beams due to premature de-bonding, while most of the prestressed specimens failed due to CFRP plate fracture. The evaluation equations of flexural capacity of RC beams is suggested and these equations have a good reliability in predicting flexural strength of RC beams.

  • An experimental investigations on the bond-slip properties of the steel and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer(GFRP) bars in engineered cementitious composite (ECC) with Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) fibers are presented. Total of 8 beam specimens prepared according to the Rilem procedures with 2% of PVA and PE fiber volume percentage and steel and GFRP reinforcements significantly changed the failure mechanism and slightly improved bond strength. The main objective of the tests was to evaluate the load versus displacement and load versus slip behaviors and the bond strength for the following parameters: concrete type (normal and fiber concrete) and bar diameter (10 and 13 mm). The study results showed that ordinary concrete and ECC specimens showed similar behavior for steel reinforced specimen. However, GFRP reinforced specimen showed different behavior that the steel specimen. The code analytical results showed more accuracy compared to the experimental results as expected in conservative code provisions. Based on the obtained results, it is safe to conclude that the new parameters need to be adopted to ensure safe usage of ECC for construction applications.

  • This paper presents out-of-plane shear strength models for composite wall with steel plates based on limit theorem in the framework of the plasticity theory. The formulas proposed by JEAG 4618 need to be reconsidered with a couple of limitations; ignoring the effect of bond stress generated by studs in the process of calculating arch action, illogically discriminating between concrete shear cracking strength and arch strength by algebraic relation in short shear span ratio(0-2.0). In most cases, reinforcement ratio is not sufficient to yield, as a result, arch strength is determined by accounting equilibrium including both bond strength and concrete compressive strength. We conducted experimental research assuming that SC wall is a continuous beam under the simplified loading patterns, changing main valuables involving the number of studs, stirrups. The results show good agreements with the formula and we quoted the test results of JEAG.

  • A general earthquake resistant design philosophy of ductile frame buildings allows beams to form plastic hinges adjacent to beam-column connections. In order to carry out this design philosophy, the ultimate bond or shear strength of the beam should be greater than the flexural yielding force and should not degrade before reaching its required ductility. The behavior of RC members dominated by bond or shear action reveals a dramatic reduction of energy dissipation in the hysteretic response due to the severe pinching effects. In this study, a method was proposed to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete members with short-span-to-depth-ratios, which would result in bond failure after flexural yielding. Repeated or cyclic loading produces a progressive deterioration of bond that may lead to failure at lower cyclic bond stress levels. Accumulation of bond damage is caused by the propagation of micro-cracks and progressive crushing of concrete in front of the lugs. The proposed method takes into account bond deterioration due to the degradation of concrete in the post yield range. In order to verify bond deformability of the proposed method, the predicted results were compared with the experimental results of RC members reported in the technical literature. Comparisons between the observed and calculated bond deformability of the tested RC members showed reasonably good agreement.
