  • A 10-year-old, intact female Beagle dog was presented for examination of acute onset of right-sided head tilt and moderate ataxia. Clinical signs were acutely presented 12 days ago and had been progressively alleviated until the admission day. The dog was bright, alert, and responsive. On neurological examinations, mild head tilt to the right and mild ataxia were noted, thus vestibular disorders were suspected. Central vestibular disease was ruled out based on the clinical signs, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) analysis. Otoscopic examination showed that the tympanic membranes were intact and normal in appearance. On radiographic and MR examinations, abnormalities were not found in the tympanic bulla and the petrous portion of the temporal bone. Hypothyroidism was ruled out by thyroid-stimulation hormone(TSH) stimulation test. Clinical signs were completely disappeared at 2 weeks after discharge without any therapy. Thus, the dog was definitively diagnosed as idiopathic vestibular disease based on the clinical signs, excluding other causes of vestibular dysfunction, and the alleviation of clinical signs with time.

  • The present study evaluated the effects of different anesthesia techniques on oxidative stress in beagle dogs. Ten dogs were randomly assigned to either total intramuscular anesthesia with medetomidine-tiletamine/zolazepam (MTZ) combination (group T, 40 ${\mu}g/kg$ medetomidine and 2 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam) or volatile anesthesia with isoflurane (group I, 2% isoflurane and 100% oxygen). Heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature for vital signs and the concentration of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) for oxidative stress were measured. SOD activity decreased significantly from baseline anesthesia in both groups ($p$ < 0.05). CAT and GPx activities were also decreased significantly after anesthesia between both groups ($p$ < 0.05). CAT activity decreased significantly from baseline after anesthesia in both groups, but activities of group I were significantly higher compared with group T after anesthesia ($p$ < 0.05). GPx activity in group T decreased significantly from baseline after anesthesia, but activities of group I were significantly higher compare with that of group T 1 hour after the conclusion of anesthesia ($p$ < 0.05). In conclusion, general anesthesia seems to induce oxidative stress, and volatile anesthesia with isoflurane attenuates oxidative injuries in beagle dogs.

  • This study was performed to determine a comprehensive anatomic variation and deviation of the nasal septum in clinically normal dogs by use of computed tomography (CT). The nasal septum was evaluated in 36 shihtzu dogs and 16 beagle dogs. A degree of a septal deviation was evaluated by measuring a maximum angle and a distance of the septal deviation. The angle and distance of the septal deviation were significantly higher in shih-tzu dogs than in beagle dogs. There was no significant relationship between body weight and age and all measurements (angle and distance) in both breed dogs. Results of this study suggest that nasal septum deviation and its defect are observed on CT images of clinically normal dogs, especially in shih-tzu dogs.

  • The objective of this study was to measure densities in various areas of the normal canine lung with computed tomography (CT) depending on influences of gravity and the degree of lung inflation and to determine optimal positions and positive end expiratory pressure of canine lung for CT scanning. In each eight normal Beagle and Shihtzu dogs, a respiratory breathhold maneuver without spontaenous breathing at different positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) of 0 mmHg, 10 mmHg and 20 mmHg was applied with the position of right and left lateral recumbency, sternal recumbency, and dorsal recumbency and spiral-CT scans of the total lung were acquired. Slices were selected at three levels through the apex, middle and basal lung at the aortic arch, carina and just above the diaphragm and lung density was measured in the dorsal, ventral, and lateral portions of the peripheral lung field. Lung density in dependent areas was higher than in nondependent areas (p < 0.05) regardless of species, positions, anatomic locations at the PEEP of 0 mmHg and 10 mmHg. However, no significant difference of lung density was found at PEEP of 20 mmHg in both species except the dorsal recumbency in Shihtzu dogs. This density gradient in the dependent areas is strongly influenced by PEEP (p < 0.05). In the four positions on the CT gantry, the lung density at the dependent and nondependent location of the lung was greater at the aortic arch than at the base (p < 0.05). Lung density decreased on identical location according to increase of PEEP (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between right and left lung density at sternal and dorsal recumbency and no significant difference of the dorsal, ventral, and lateral portions of lung density at the right and left recumbency under identical pressure. It is implied that during chest CT scan with 20 mmHg of positive end expiratory pressure with right or left lateral recumbency, canine lung density do not influenced by gravity or anatomic location.

  • The acute toxicity of Paecilomyces sinclairii was tested in beagle dogs. We daily examined clinical signs, body weights, and hematological/biochemical examinations for 14 days after administration of Paecilomyces sinclairii with different dose levels (0, 0.4, 2 and 10 g/kg). There were no clinical signs and no significant changes in hematological and biochemical analysis. These results showed that Paecilomyces sinclairii did not induce any remarkable acute toxic response and the $LD_{50}$ was greater than 10 g/kg in beagle dogs.

  • Acute toxicity of EPO(Erythropoietin) was investigated using rats and beagle dogs according to Established Regulation of Korean National Institute of Safety Research (1994. 4. 14). Rats and beagle dogs were injected intravenously with dosages of 20000 IU/kg, 2000 IU/kg, 200 IU/kg, 20 IU/kg and 2 IU/kg. In animals injected with EPO, there were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs and autopsy findings. Therefore $LD_50$ of EPO was considered to be higher than 20000 IU/ kg B. W. in rats and beagle dogs.

  • SDK (skin decontamination kit) is new skin decontaminant which is developed by ADD (Agency for defence development). In this study, four-week toxicity of SDK was investigated using beagle dogs and Sprague-Dawley rats. The beagle dogs and Sprague-Dawley rats were dressed topically seven days per week for 28 days, with dosage of 0, 0.25, 0.8 and 1 g/kg/day. respectively. Animals treated with SDK did not cause any death and show any clinical signs. They did not show any significant changes of body weight, feed uptake and water consumption. They were not significantly different from the control group in urinalysis, ocular examination and histopathological examination. In hematological and serum biochemical assay, there were no-dose-defendent changes. Therefore, SDK was not indicated to have any toxic effect in the beagle dogs and Sprague-Dawley rats when it was dressed topically below the dosage 1 g/kg/day for four weeks.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the safety test for propolis in Beagle based on blood count, serum biochemistry, and electrolyte. Total six beagle dogs were assigned to this experiment. To investigate the safety of propolis in beagle dogs, we performed oral administration of propolis (5%) for 8 weeks. Among six beagles, three beagle dogs were randomly allocated to the control group which were fed only regular fodder, and the other three dogs were assigned as the treatment group which were fed regular fodder and propolis (5%). No clinical signs were observed in neither group throughout the experimental period. During the experimental period, there were no significant change in feed intake, water consumption, and body condition. Also, there were no statistically significant differences in hematological and biochemical analyses between the control group and the treated group. Our safety study showed that oral consumption of propolis did not cause any toxicological effects in beagle dogs.
