  • The purpose of this paper is to 1)examine the current state of cultural studies in Korea with a focus on recent discourses about its 'crisis' and 2)attempt to find some ways out of these dilemmas in drama/theatre/performance studies. As Raymond Williams redefined 'culture' as 'a whole way of life,' performance studies has expanded the boundary of 'performance' from traditional performing arts onto almost everything that can be studied and analyzed 'as' performance. Performance is not only the final product on display but a whole process that includes training, workshop, and rehearsal of culture. According to Richard Schechner, workshop and rehearsal are the most critical and creative 'liminal' phases that allow traditional knowledge and alternative challenges to coexist in conflict and intentionally delay the final decision by putting itself in a perpetual process. From this view, this essay attempts to find an-no matter how limited and temporary-answer to or a possible exit from political and theoretical aporias of cultural studies.

  • Attitudes toward target language culture and motivation have been known as important factors in second or foreign language learning. In this study, cadets' attitudes toward the target language community and culture were investigated to find out any relationships with English achievement. Integrative or instrumental motivation in foreign military context was investigated to determine which motivation was more positively related to English proficiency. Cadets' responses were shown highly positive and internally consistent in most cases. Military cadets' attitudes toward American culture were statistically significant and could predict their English achievement. Even though integrative motivation was statistically significant, correlation with English achievement was low. However, instrumental motivation was not significant. This result implies that attitudes toward culture is an important factor in foreign language learning and integrative-instrumental motivation dichotomy might not be enough to explain specific context like cadets' English learning situation at Korea Army Academy at Youngcheon.

  • This paper explores the extent of the Christian influence of Liang Fa's Quanshiliangyan and Isaachar J. Roberts on Hong Xiuquan and the Taiping Movement. Hong's religious background was in Confucianism, but when he encountered Liang Fa's Quanshiliangyan, he identified with Christianity. Subsequently, he studied with Roberts for two or three months. The religious experiences of Hong served as motives for the establishment of the Society of God Worshippers and the Taiping Movement. Therefore, this paper develops Liang's key ideas and Roberts' main teachings, describes Hong's beliefs and the actual practices of the Taiping Movement, as found in official documents of the Taipings, and compares their similarities and differences. Hong and his leaders received the new ideas of Christianity at the expense of their traditional culture. Furthermore, they attempted to combine Chinese culture with Christianity, as well as believe in Christianity to the limits of their understanding. Finally, this study finds that even though the Quanshiliangyan and Isaachar J. Roberts may have given the Taiping Movement its religious form and driving force, the theological vision of both Liang and Hong that also emerged from their Chinese culture energized the Taipings. The Taiping Movement resulted from a deliberate synthesis of Christian ideas and native Chinese practices in China.

  • The purpose of his study was to explore the effect of crossover musical activities applying the traditional Korean Jang-dan on the multicultural perception of young children. The subjects of this study were one class of 21 5-year-old children(experimental group) in J kindergarten and two classes of 5-year-old children (20 children in comparative group and 20 children in control group) in S kindergarten located in Y city, totaling 61 children (31 male children and 30 female children). Twenty sessions of Crossover musical activities applying the traditional Korean Jang-dan (rhythmic patterns) developed by the author were applied to the experimental group, musical activities focusing on traditional Korean music to the comparative group and musical classes from Nuri curriculum for 5-year-olds to the control group, respectively. The result of this study showed the following, among the sub-factors of multi-cultural perception, the scores of post-cultural openness and post-cultural acceptability showed a significantly higher level in statistical terms in the experimental group, for which crossover musical activities applying the traditional Korean Jang-dan were conducted, than those in the comparative group and the control group. The comparative group which participated in musical activities of traditional Korean music exhibited a significantly higher level of post-cultural respectfulness statistically (than other groups). The result of this study implies that crossover musical activities applying the traditional Korean Jang-dan have the effect of enhancing the perception of cultural openness and cultural acceptability which are the sub-factors of young children's multi-cultural perception.

  • As the digital environment expended, concern about importance of narrative and its value has been increased. But detailed study regarding narrative analysis leaves much to be desired. Most studies on animation narrative structure are focused on Japanese and Disney animation of America, shot films in particular. Plus these have not been done by the comparative method but separately by product. This study aims at clarifying the peculiar narrative characteristics between Chinese and American animation through the comparative analysis about s, which are produced in the respective countries, China on behalf of High-context culture and America as the Low-context culture.

  • In general, food depicted in animated films symbolically conveys cultural emotions. And yet, as diverse studies have shown, even from the perspective of cultural semiotics, there are different ways to interpret food symbolism. This study focuses on food depicted in American and Japanese animation, through a comparative analysis of scenes from "The Simpsons" (1989-present), the longest-running American animated program, and "Atashin'chi" (2002-2009), a much-beloved animated sitcom that follows the daily experiences of a Japanese family. It is hoped that the research presented here may be applied as a criterion in the production stage for understanding the cognitive function of cultural underpinnings and symbolic expression in animated works.
