  • Most fractal image codings using fractal concept require long encoding time because a large amount of computation is needed to find an optimal affine transformation point. Such a problem can be solved by designing a block classifier fitted to characteristics of image blocks. In general, it is possible to predict more precise and various types of blocks in frequency domain than in spatial domain. In this paper, we propose a block classifier to predict the block type using characteristics of DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform). This classifier has merits to enhance the quality of decoded images as well as to reduce the encoding time meeting fractal features. AC coefficient values in frequency domain make it possible to predict various types of blocks. As the results, the number of comparisons between a range block and the correspoding domain blocks to reach an optimal affine transformation point can be reduced. Specially, signs of DCT coefficients help to find the optimal affine transformation point with only two isometric transformations by eliminating unnecessary isometric transformations among eight isometric transformations used in traditional fractal codings.

  • Incidence matrix is a useful tool for presenting incomplete block designs; however, it is inadequate to use only an incidence matrix in examining whether a certain incomplete block design becomes a balanced incomplete block design or not. We can use a structural matrix as a useful tool to show whether a certain incomplete block design becomes a balanced incomplete block design or not. We propose an augmented incidence matrix and ${\lambda}$ matrix as another tools for evaluating incomplete block designs. Through the augmented incidenc matrix and ${\lambda}$ matrix, we can ascertain whether a certain incomplete block design becomes a balance incomplete block design or not.

  • An effective placement of macro blocks having arbitrary width and height is very important in reducing the chip area and the signal delay. In this paper, we proposed a method of macro block placement to obtain the globally optimal placement using simulated annealing, and an efficient algorithm for eliminating the overlaps between the rectangular macro blocks which may remain even after the simulated annealing process is terminated. Each macro block was enlarged to take into account minimal routing area, and these macro blocks were compacted as much as possible during the placement. This procedure was implemented in C language running on MV10000/UNIX computer system, and good placements were obtained by applying this procedure to two circuits which were consisted of 50 and 160 macro blocks respectively. Several parameters giving great effects to final placements were investigated.

  • In this paper, we designed one-dimensional VLSI array with high speed processing in Fractal image compression. fractal image compression algorithm partitions the original image into domain blocks and range blocks then compresses data using the self similarity of blocks. The image is partitioned into domain block with 50% overlapping. Domain block is reduced by averaging the original image to size of range block. VLSI array is trying to search the best matching between a range block and a large amount of domain blocks. Adjacent domain blocks are overlapped, so we can improve of each block's processing speed using the reuse of the overlapped data. In our experiment, proposed VLSI array has about 25% speed up by adding the least register, MUX, and DEMUX to the PE.

  • This paper deals with a method for intrablock anlaysis of balanced incomplete block designs on the basis of projections under the assumption of mixed effects model. It shows how to construct a model at each step by the stepwise procedure and discusses how to use projection for the analysis of intrablock. Projections are obtained in vector subspaces orthogonal to each other. So the estimates of the treatment effects are not affected by the block effects. The estimability of a parameter or a function of parameters is discussed and eigenvectors are dealt for the construction of estimable functions.

III.

  • Despite the frequent use of the soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall (SRW) system, the roles of the different components comprising the system, such as facing blocks, reinforcements, backfill, and block/backfill interface, are still not fully understood, and much still need to be investigated for more safe and economical design/analysis method. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the aim of understanding the effect of the shear strength of backfill material and the reinforcement stiffness on the behavior of SRW by using the finite element analysis. In the analysis the details of construction sequence and the SRW components were carefully modeled, and a parametric study was performed in order to investigate the effects of shear strength of backfill soil and reinforcement stiffness on the wall displacement and earth pressure, the vertical stress under the reinforced block, the reinforcement and block/reinforcement connection forces. Implications of the findings from this study to current design practices were discussed in detail.

  • If only fixed effects exist in a 4 $\times$ 4 balanced incomplete block design, powers of FR statistic for testing a main effect show the highest level with a few replications. Under the exponential and double exponential distributions, FR statistic shows relatively high powers with big differences as compared with the F statistic. Further in a traditional balanced incomplete block design, powers of FR statistic having a fixed main effect and a random block effect show superior preference for all situations without regard to the effect size of a main effect, the parameter size and the type of population distributions of a block effect. Powers of FR statistic increase in a high speed as replications increase. Overall power preference of FR statistic for testing a main effect is caused by unique characteristic of a balanced incomplete block design having one main and block effect with missing observations, which sensitively responds to small increase of main effect and sample size.
