  • Recently, the evaluating method of the bone mineral density (BMD) in X-ray absorptiometry image has been studied for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis which is known as a metabolic disease. The BMD, in general, is evaluated by calculating pixel intensity in the bone segmented regions. Accurate bone region extraction is extremely crucial for the BMD evaluation. So, a X-Ray image enhancement is needed to get precise bone segmentation. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement method of X-ray image having multiple noise based sparse representation. To evaluate the performance of proposed method, we employ the contrast to noise ratio (CNR) metric and cut-view graphs visualizing image enhancement performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the BayesShrink noise reduction methods and the previous noise reduction method in sparse representation with general noise model.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the analytical model for the hysteretic behavior of Reinforced Concrete bearn-column joints under various loading history. Discrete line elernents , YVith inelastic rotational spring was adopted to consider the movement of plastic hinging zone influenced by the details of longitudinal reinforcements. Also hysteretic model was constructed by excluding such variables which can not be utilized in dynamic analysis of Reinforced Concrete. structure that it will be adoptable in two-dimensional inelastic frame ardysis with 6-DOF. From the analysis of previous test results, it was found that stiffness deterioration caused by inelastic hysteretic loadings can be predicted by the functron of basic pinching coefficients, ductility ratio.and yield strength ratio of members. Strength degradation coefficients were newly proposed to explain the difference of inelastic behavior of members caused by spacing ratio of transverse steel and sectlon aspect ratio. The energy dissipation capacities calculated using the analytical model proposed in thls paper show a good agreements w~lh test results by an error of 10~20%.

  • Numerical simulation of dynamic soil-pile-structure interaction embedded in a dry sand was carried out. 3D model of the dynamic centrifuge model tests was formulated in a time domain to consider nonlinear behavior of soil using the finite difference method program, FLAC3D. As a modeling methodology, Mohr-Coulomb criteria was adopted as soil constitutive model. Soil nonlinearity was considered by adopting the hysteretic damping model, and an interface model which can simulate separation and slip between soil and pile was adopted. Simplified continuum modeling (Kim et al., 2012) was used as boundary condition to reduce analysis time. Calibration process for numerical modeling results and test results was performed through the parametric study. Verification process was then performed by comparing numerical modeling results with another test results. Based on the calibration and validation procedure, it is identified that proposed modeling method can properly simulate dynamic behavior of soil-pile system in dry condition.

  • Nowadays, there are many attempts to develop domestic medical-equipments. In this study, it is performed to developed a new vertebral fusion device. The basic models are a rectangular-frame type and a screw type which are generally used for the patients. The main purpose of the development of a new device is to reduce the amount of bone taken out for the insertion of a device to vertebral disc and this paper is focused on th concept of a new device shape. In the results, two types are devised. One is a folding type and the other is a separate-push-in type device both are in primitive stage. However, in a folding type there are mechanical pins and the analysis of pins and the lock system is still in study and needs some time. Therefore a separate-push-in type is introduced in this study mainly and a prototype and 3-D finite element model are made and experimented and stress analyzed. From the results it is considered that it is stable for the basic loading condition of vertebra, however, it is required to develop a supporting operational equipment for the convenience of the operation in practice.

  • This paper presents a new global optimization algorithm based on the branch-and-bound principle using Bspline approximation techniques. It describes the algorithmic components and details on their implementation. The key components include the subdivision of a design space into mutually disjoint subspaces and the bound calculation of the subspaces, which are all established by a real-valued B-spline volume model. The proposed approach was demonstrated with various test problems to reveal computational performances such as the solution accuracy, number of function evaluations, running time, memory usage, and algorithm convergence. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is complete without using heuristics and has a good possibility for application in large-scale NP-hard optimization.

  • An artificial light source has a character that a light emits from a point to all directions with many radial and straight ray shapes. It is very difficult and complex to render those emitting lights. Also, users have difficulty in expressing exactly 3D objects because of colors varying with changing of a light and having many parameters. In this paper, to solve those problems we design an artificial light source using X3D to create a model that represents easily many radial and straight ray shapes and propose the online system that each factors of colors to be reflected by a light is separated and then users can control them to detect object's colors by a mouse. Various light sources with reality can be easily created using proposed system.

  • Recently, the composite materials have been researched actively by many researchers because of its useful properties. Especially, an interface crack on the dissimilar material exposes the behavior of the mixed mode crack even though under only the tension stress. In the previous papers, crack energy density(CED) was shown as the crack behavior evaluation parameter which can be expressed consistently from the onset until a final fracture. In a present paper, the basic properties of CED on the interface crack are examined because the results by CED at the homogeneous material above are also expected to be held at the dissimilar material. And we proposed that the contribution of each mode of CED can be separated and be evaluated. Furthermore, the total CED and contribution of each mode are evaluated by domain integral through a finite element analysis at the elastic crack model and the basic examination are carried out.

  • In this study, beat control method using an equivalent ring model is proposed to control beat period of a slightly asymmetric ring. Slight asymmetry in a ring generates mode pair and the interaction of the mode pair makes beat in vibration and sound. In a ring, as a simplified bell type structure, mode data are measured and an equivalent ring is determined so that the measured mode condition is satisfied. By the finite element analysis on the equivalent ring, changes of mode pair condition are predicted when local mass is attached or the local thickness is decreased. The predicted results are compared with the experimental result and the validity of the proposed method is verified.

  • In this study, an analysis technique of hybrid girder considering nonlinearity of steel-concrete contact surface is presented. Steel-concrete hybrid girder shows partial-interaction behavior due to the deformation of shear connectors, slip and detachment at the interface, and cracks under the applied loads. Therefore, the partial-interaction approach becomes more reasonable. Contact surface is modeled by interface element and analyzed nonlinearly because of cost of time and effort to detailed model and analysis. Steel and Concrete are modeled considering non-linearity of materials. Material property of contact surface is obtained from push-out test and input to interface element. For the constitutive models, Drucker-Prager and smeared cracking model are used for concrete in compression and tension, respectively, and a von-Mises model is used for steel. This analysis technique is verified by comparing it with test results. Using verified analysis technique, various analyses are performed with different parameters such as nonlinear material property of interface element and prestress. The results are compared with linear analysis result and analysis result with the assumption of full-interaction.

  • There is a greater importance for underground work designed and built in the urban areas when it comes to considering the cost-effectiveness and the period of construction commensurate with an increasing trend of skyscrapers. At this stage of underground work, it's extremely necessary to choose a proper earth retaining method. Therefore, the study has suggested the rational retaining wall method by developing the support vector machine(SVM) model as a tool to choose a proper retaining wall method applied at the stage of selecting the earth retaining method. In order to develop the SVM model, the binary SVM classifier is expanded into a multi-class classifier. and to present the feasibility of our SVM model, we considered 129 projects. Applying the 'SVM Model' developed in the study to the designing and developing stages of the earth retaining work will contribute to the successful outcomes by decreasing any changes of design from implementing the earth retaining.
