  • To confirm the taxonomic identity of taxa described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, H. H. A, a French plant taxonomist, in the serial papers of Decades plantarum novarum based on the collections of Fathers Faurie and Taquet from the Korean peninsula, we examined the numerous references that contained taxonomic opinions about $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ taxa. Among them, 146 taxa were confirmed as conspecific with other existing taxa. Of them, 79 taxa, including Ajuga devestita, were listed as a synonym of only one species. Sixty-seven taxa, including Bidens robertianifolia, were listed as synonyms of two or more species according to taxonomists. Eight taxa, including Aconitum coreanum, were considered illegitimate names because of later homonym, or other problems. Five taxa, including Rhododendron hallaisanense, were treated either as distinct or conspecific taxa depending on taxonomists.

  • The genus Actinidia has been recorded as having total six taxa, composed of four species and two varieties, in Korea. However, its taxonomy remains complex because of disagreement on taxonomic characters used for species boundaries. Based upon morphological, anatomical, and palynological characters, we re-evaluated species delimitations in the genus Actinidia. Critical observation of wild populations and extensive herbarium materials including types were also carried out. It is generally considered that leaf thickness and shape, hair type and color were important diagnostic characters to identify species, but these characters were insufficient to be diagnostic characters because of their wide variation ranges. On the other hands, pith pattern, winter bud protrusion rate, scale leaf number, anther color, fruit shape, and maturity season were taxonomic significance. A. arguta var. platyphylla and A. arguta var. rufinervis have been identified by hair type and color, but these characters showed continuous variation in A. arguta. Therefore, two varieties are treated as synonyms of A. arguta. Consequently four species are recognized in Korea: A. polygama, A. kolomikta, A. rufa, and A. arguta. A key is provided, as well as complete descriptions of the species examined, including information on nomenclatural types, and synonymies.

  • Taxonomic revision of the family Engraulidae was conducted based on the specimens collected from the coasts of Korean Peninsula from 1990 to 1995. Seven species representing four genera are reviewed, and provisional keys to the species and genera are provided with synonyms and their distributions. Thryssa adelae (Rutter, 1897) newly reported from Korea is redescribed in this paper. Thryssa kammalensis (Bleeker, 1849) is a synonym of Thryssa koreana or Thryssa chefuensis. Setipinna tenuifilis (Valenciennes, 1848) is proposed as a replacement name for Setipinna taty, Thryssa adelae (Rutter, 1897) for Thryssa mystax and Thryssa purava, Coilia nasus Schlegel 1846 for Coilia ectenes. Most species of clupeoid fishes in Korea are shared with Chinese and Japanese faunas including tropical and temperature species without endemics.

  • Five species of the genus Leontopodium are recognized in Korea, but their taxonomic positions have been controversial. To clarify the taxonomic entity of these Korean species, we examined their morphological characters based on herbarium specimens and field observations. Valuable distinguishing characters for identification included the plant height, the basal shape of cauline leaves, the type and position of inflorescence, the types of hairs, the presence of leaves at the anthesis, and hairs on the phyllaries. Based on our observations, we were able to determine the taxonomic relationships between L. japonicum and its relatives, L. coreanum and L. hallaisanense. We also included the morphological characters of L. seorakensis in continuous variations of L. leiolepis, which we treated as synonyms. Consequently, we classified these Korean Leontopodium species into four taxa - L. coreanum var. coreanum, L. coreanum var. hallaisanense, L. leiolepis, and L. leontopodioides - with appropriate descriptions and illustrations.

  • Korean species within the genus Astragalus have been taxonomically revised based on herbarium specimens and field examinations. In this study, we recognized the following eight species and one variety: A. laxmannii subsp. laxmannii, A. dahuricus, A. sikokianus, A. uliginosus, A. schelichowii, A. setsureianus, A. mongholicus var. dahuricus, A. mongholicus var. nakaianus, and A. sinicus. Based on recent taxonomic progress with this genus, their scientific names are being reconsidered. A Korean plant, previously recorded as A. adsurgens, is included in the polymorphic taxa A. laxmannii subsp. laxmannii. Astragalus koraiensis was initially described from Gangwon Province as an endemic species, and it is now regarded as conspecific with A. sikokianus. Furthermore, the taxonomic entities and their morphological characteristics have been clarified for A. schelichowii and A. setsureianus, both of which are not well known in Korea. We provide a key to these species and enumerate their synonymies and taxonomic notes.

  • Twenty-five nominal species of Korea stag beetles have been reported from Korea since Heyden (1887). As a result of the present study, seven species are synonymized and the following six species are excluded from Korean fauna because they have been misidentified: Aegus laevicollis, Platycerus delicatulus, P. acuticollis, Gnaphaloryx velutinus, Prismognathus angularis and Nipponodorcus montivagus. The two species, Dorcus taiwanicus and A. laevicollis are discovered newly. Therfore, Korean Lucanidae consists of 14 species of 10 genera.

  • The taxonomic revision of the genus Periophthalmus from Korea was made based on the fish specimens collected in the southern and western coasts of Korea from September 1983 to October 1994. The genus Periophthalmus in Korea was classified into two species : P. modestus and P. magnuspinnatus n. sp. P. magnuspinnatus differs from all other species of the genus by ventral fin united about two - third the fin and first dorsal fin relatively large, convex, distinct black submarginal band.
