Among several factors controlling soil compaction, temperature is the factor that varies with region and season. Although earthwork is performed in many projects in the cold regions of the earth, studies on quantifying soil compaction associated with temperature are limited. This experimental study investigates the temperature effect on the soil compaction of cohesionless soil. Jumunjin sand was selected for the tests to represent cohesionless clean sand, which is widely used as an engineering fill at petrochemical projects such as northern Alberta of Canada and Russia. The laboratory test program consists of performing a series of standard proctor tests varying temperature of soil samples ranging from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $17^{\circ}C$. Test results indicate that soil specimen volume expansion occurred from bulking and its range was 0% to 6% with zero above temperature. For increasing temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $17^{\circ}C$, water content corresponding to maximum volume (minimum dry unit weight) was decreased and water content corresponding to minimum volume (maximum dry unit weight observed after reaching minimum dry unit weight) was slightly increased with increasing temperature. In zero below temperature, dry unit weight gradually decreased with increasing water content. In this case, no bulking effect was found and soil specimen volume increased due to the higher unit volume of ice.
This study was conducted on four 11th grade students at a high school in a small town to determine the effectiveness of responsive teaching. The three phases of the responsive teaching method proposed in the previous study were subdivided into six stages; Step 1 is elicitation of students' thoughts related to macroscopic world, Step 2 is drawing of students' early thoughts related to microscopic world, Step 3 is disciplinary connections with ideas of the particle, Step 4 is to clarify the learner's thoughts on the particle by the teacher's involvement, Step 5 is deepening students' thoughts, and Step 6 is expanding ideas. In Step 4, students came to the recognition that the cause of mass was atoms and that the cause of volume was molecules. In Step 5, students led to a shift in thinking that could ignore the volume of the molecules themselves through the properties of protons and neutrons that affect mass from a particle perspective. In the Step 6 of expanding ideas, students explained molecular motion by the concept of material point which ignores the volume of particles. This steps gave students perspectives on the relationship between the mass and volume of particles required by Avogadro's law. The students recognized that some systems could be studied only indirectly because they were too small, too large, too fast, or too slow to observe directly.
The study on the adsorption, the surface properties and the antibacterial effects of the Ni-treated PAN based activated carbon fibers was carried out. In the adsorption study on the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs, Type I isotherms for N1-N3 and Type II-Type III isotherms for N4-N6 were obtained, respectively. Futhermore, their adsorbed volumes slowly were decreased with the increase in the mole concentration of Ni on the treated PAN based ACFs. From the BET equation, the specific surface areas of the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs were in the range of $692.58-895.24m^2/g$. The micropore volumes obtained from ${\alpha}_s$-method using common-t value were $0.19-0.56cm^3/g$. The surfaces of PAN based ACFs partially blocked by metal after the treatment were observed from the SEM micrographs. Finally, from the antibacterial effects using Shake flask method against E. coli, the percentage of the effects was 92.5-100% and the antibacterial effect was increased with the increase in mole concentration of Ni treated.

The purpose of this study was to utilize hydroculture by the vital means of the improvement of indoor relative humidity. This experiment employed a search of the effect of Scindapsus aureus and Syngonium podophyllum that are generalized for hydroculture foliage plant by a difference of volume ratio, pot media and plants species. In the case of Scindapsus aureus, relative humidity was high for growth chamber in which plants presented as opposed to control growth chambers in which there were no plants. Although relative humidity was 25% in control chamber, there was an increase of 40% at a 2% volume ratio, 45% at a 3% volume ratio and 50% at a 5% volume ratio. The relative humidity of Syngonium podophyllum was 40% at a 2% volume ratio, 44% at a 3% volume ratio and 46% at a 5% volume ratio, while the control treatment was 25% relative humidity in hydroculture. Both the control treatment and hydroball pot in a hydroball container were high at first. As time progressed, artificial soil pots in water containers was similar when housed within the control chamber by about 45% relative humidity. Hydroball pots in water container had about 30% relative humidity. Ardisia pusilla of hydroball poIt in hydroball container had about 38% relative humidity.

This research investigates the effects of sonication mode, reaction temperature and volume on sonolysis of 1,4-dioxane in order to increase the degradation efficiency and kinetics. The degradation efficiency in case with pulse mode was about 10 % higher than that in case with continuous mode. The degradation profiles in both cases, which were performed without the control of reaction temperature and in 1000 mL, were composed of three steps. However, 1,4-D was mainly degraded in the initiation step as the first portion and the acceleration step as the second portion. The initial step agreed with zero-order expression well, while the acceleration step could be fitted with pseudo 1st-order expression. The kinetic model in case with $5^{\circ}C$ and 300 mL conformed to pseudo 1st-order, while that in cases with $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ agreed with zero-order expression. The degradation efficiency and profile of 1,4-D in the experiment with $20^{\circ}C$ and 300 mL was higher and simpler than that in case with $20^{\circ}C$ and 1000 mL. The reaction temperature and volume influence bubble intensity, which was produced in sonication. The increase of bubble intensity induced to augment the production of OH radical in sonication.
Behaviors of cemented engineered soils, composed of rigid sand particle and soft rubber particle, are investigated under $K_o$ condition. The uncemented and cemented specimens are prepared with various sand volume fractions to estimate the effect of the cementation in mixtures. The vertical deformation and elastic wave velocities with vertical stress are measured. The bender elements and PZT sensors are used to measure elastic wave velocities. After cementation, the slope of vertical strain shows bilinear and is similar to that of uncemented specimen after decementation. Normalized vertical strains can be divided into capillary force, cementation, and decementation region. The first deflection of the shear wave in near field matches the first arrival of the primary wave. The elastic wave velocities dramatically increase due to cementation hardening under the fixed vertical stress, and are almost identical with additional stress. After decementation, the elastic wave velocities increase with increase in the vertical stress. The effect of cementation hinders the typical rubber-like, sand-like, and transition behaviors observed in uncemented specimens. Different mechanism can be expected in decementation of the rigid-soft particle mixtures due to the sand fraction. a shape change of individual particles in low sand fraction specimens; a fabric change between particles in high sand fraction specimens. This study suggests that behaviors of cemented engineered soils, composed of rigid-soft particles, are distinguished due to the cementation and decementation from those of uncemented specimens.

The foam separation of bovine serum proteins was investigated and the protein fractionation by foam separation was analyzed by PAG electrophoresis. The protein concentration for the surface excess formation of bovine serum was in the range of $20-800\;{\mu}g/ml$. At pH 5, the foamate volume was maximum, but the enrichment ratio minimum. As the temperature was elevated, the foamate volume decreased and the enrichment ratio increase. As the gas flow rate increased from 25 to 100 ml/min, the foamate volume decreased and the enrichment ratio increased. The enrichment ration became maximum when the added ionic strength of serum solution was in the range of 1-3 by the addition of different types of salts, and this was related to the reduction of surface tension of the solution. In general, BSA, ${\alpha}_1$, and ${\alpha}_2-globulins$, which have relatively small molecular weight and high hydrophobicity, moved easily to the foam, and the separation of protein fractions in the serum varied with the changes in pH, temperature, gas flow rate and ionic strength of the solution.
Structural volume change occurring on the Si-based anode battery materials during alloying/dealloying with lithium is noticed to be a major drawback responsible for a limited cycle life. Silicon monoxide has been reported to show relatively improved cycling performance compared to Si-containing materials for rechargeable lithium batteries, due to the structural buffering role of in-situ formed $Li_2O$ and lithium silicate during the reaction of silicon monoxide and lithium. Here we report improved cycling ability of interfacially stabilized Si-$SiO_2$-graphite composite anode using silane-based electrolyte additive for rechargeable lithium batteries, which includes low cost silicon dioxide for structural stabilization and graphite for enhanced conductivity.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of flour's protein contents on the quality of Danish pastries made with frozen doughs. Danish pastries for frozen dough were made by straight dough method. Frozen doughs were stored for 12 weeks at -20$^{\circ}C$ and baked after thawing and fermentation a month. The volume, the moisture content, the texture and the quality evaluation of Danish pastries were investigated. The volume of Danish pastry decreased with the increase of frozen storage time. Danish pastry made by flour of 13.2% protein content showed larger volume than that made by flour of 9.2% protein content. The moisture content of Danish pastry revealed that there were no significant decrease with the increase of frozen storage time. In terms of hardness, Danish pastry made by flour of 9.2% protein content accomplished the best texture in the resulting pastry. On the quality evaluation, Danish pastry made by flour of 13.2% protein content had the highest score.
