  • Purpose: Wogonin is an active component isolated from scutellariae radix. This study was conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effect of wogonin mixed with hydrogel on osteoclast differentiation. Methods: It was performed to estimate cytotoxicity of Wogonin alginate hydrogel disk(WHD) in BMMs stimulated with RANKL, M-CSF. ROS synthesis and actin ring formation were analysed to observe the effect of WHD. Results: WHD has no cytotoxicity at the concentration of 0.1 ${\mu}g/ml$ or lower. 0.1 ${\mu}g/ml$, 1 ${\mu}g/ml$ WHD restrained the synthesis of ROS and 0.1 ${\mu}g/ml$, 1 ${\mu}g/ml$ WHD restrained the formation of actin ring. Conclusions: WHD has the inhibitory effect of osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. Further studies are needed to treat osteoporosis by herbal medicine.

PCOS is now recognised to be a metabolic syndrome which may include hyperinsulinemia, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus and possibly cardiac disease. Cyperi Rhizoma(CR) can soothe the liver to regulate gi and regulate menstruation to relieve pain. For these reasons, this study was designed to investigate the effects of CR on metabolic syndrome in PCO rats. Methods: Female rats injected with a single dose of 2 mg/kg estradiol valerate (EV) develop PCO, CR was given for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks administration of drugs, body weights, food uptake, Fasting Blood Glucose, Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, Total Cholesterol, HDL-Cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol and Triglyceride were measured once a week. Results: In this experiment, single injection of EV induced hyperlipidemia, but it did not affect serum glucose levels. Oral administration of CR prevent weight loss shown in control group. In addition, treatment with CR can lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum compared to PCO induced control group. Conclusions: These results suggest that CR can regulate hyperlipidemia in PCOS.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical effects of korean medicine treatment of dysmenorrhea patients. Methods: We studied twenty-six patients who visited Oriental Hospital of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ University from September 2011 to December 2011. Women with organic disease such as endometriosis, uterine myoma and pelvic inflammatory disease were excluded from this study. We treated them with herb, acupuncture and moxibustion for one menstrual cycle. The severity of dysmenorrhea was measured by VAS(Visual analog scale) and MVRS(Multidimensional Verbal Rating scale). Results: The mean${\pm}$Standard Error of mean(S.E) of VAS on after treatment was decreased significantly compared with that of before(p=0.00). The mean${\pm}$S.E of MVRS on after treatment was decreased significantly compared with that of before(p=0.00). Conclusions: This study shows that korean medicine treatment such as herb, acupuncture and moxibustion has remarkable effects on dysmenorrhea patients. Further study will be needed.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and biosafety of Adenophorae Radix(AR) extract in obesity or overweight patient. Methods: This study is double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled intervention Study. 30 patients with BMI $25{\leq}$ and 30> were allotted into two groups at random. In 0, $6^{th}$, $12^{th}$ week, we had checked body weight, waist line, hip line, body fat and abdominal CT scan. In 0, $12^{th}$ week, we also had checked lipid metabolism and biosafety with blood test. Results: AR treatment had a significant effect on suppressing body wight gain (p<0.01) and BMI index(p<0.01). AR treatment reduced plasma TG level but we couldn't find statistical significance. AR treatment had produced no adverse reactions. Conclusions: This study shows that Adenophorae Radix(AR) extract can reduce the weight, BMI. Adenophorae Radix(AR) extract can be used in obesity or overweight patient.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous extract from Picrasmae Lignum(PL). Methods: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of PL extract, the productions of NO, PGE2 and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine(IL-1b, IL-6 and TNF-a) were measured in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore Western blot analysis has been done to look into the inhibitory mechanisms such as MAPKs and NF-kB. Results: PL extract down-regulated LPS-induced NO, PGE2, IL-1b, IL-6 and TNF-a productions mainly through JNK and p38 MAPK pathway and NF-kB pathway. Conclusions: These results suggest that PL extract may be effective for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
