The Effects of Socioeconomic Status of Parents, Parents-Adolescent Communication, Self-Esteem on Emotional-Behavioral Autonomy (부모의 사회경제적 지위, 부모-자녀 간 의사소통 방식과 자아존중감이 청소년의 정서적·행동적 자율성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of parents' socioeconomic status, communication between parents and adolescents, and adolescents self-esteem on adolescents emotional autonomy and behavioral autonomy. The data were collected from 367 middle and high school students. The significant results were as follows. First, emotional autonomy was influenced by dysfunctional communication between the father and adolescent and open communication between the mother and adolescent after controlling for the socioeconomic status of the parents in step 2. Second, behavioral autonomy was affected by the socioeconomic status of the parents in step 1, and dysfunctional communication between the mother and adolescent and self-esteem were the meaningful predictors of behavioral autonomy after controlling for the socioeconomic status of the parents in step 2. Finally, the meanings and limitations of this research and implications for counseling strategies were discussed.

Effects of Communication Style with Parents Perceived by Female College Students on Smartphone Addiction and Depression (여대생이 지각한 부모와의 의사소통 유형이 스마트폰 중독과 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of parent-child communication style on smartphone addiction and depression among female college students. The subjects were 151 female students in three different universities located in S city. Data collection for Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory (PACI), Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) were conducted from November 1 to December 8, 2017. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Smartphone addiction in college students was 35.08 (SD = 6.83), and when communication with the mother was absent and the problem recognized, smartphone addiction was higher (${\beta}=.27$, p = .028). Open communication with the father lowered smartphone addiction (${\beta}=-.27$, p = .030). Depression in female college students was 15.86 (SD = 10.45), and 45% experienced depression. Depression was higher when communication with the mother was higher (${\beta}=.29$, p = .022). Therefore, a customized communication program that focuses on parent-child communication as a strategy to reduce or prevent degree of addiction and depression of female college students will be helpful.

Study of the relationship between filial piety and communication with parents in accordance with the general characteristics of teenagers (청소년의 일반적 특성에 따른 부모와 의사소통 및 효의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • This study analyzed the gap in perception between communication with parents and filial piety according to the general characteristics of teenagers. The test subjects were high school students from academic and vocational school from different districts of Seoul. A survey was conducted from March to July of 2014 to 290 high school students. Data analysis was conducted on the SPSSWIN 18.0 program using a t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and other tests. The empirical analysis of the experiments were verified at the significance level of 5%. First, communication with fathers differed significantly depending on the school division, economic class, religion; and communication with mothers differed significantly depending on school division, grade-level, academic performance, domestic discipline, and economic class. Second, the perception of filial piety showed a significant positive correlation with the communication with the mother; and with the communication with the father. The implication of this study is that better communication between the parents and teenagers correlate with the higher filial piety according to the general characteristics of teenagers, and should become a central material for policy.

A Path Analysis of Variables Influencing convergence-based Safer Sexual Behavior of Early Adults (초기 성인기 대학생의 융복합 기반 안전한 성행동 경로모형)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand self-esteem, sexual communication for parents, sexual assertiveness, and safer sexual behavior and. to examine the mediating effects of the sexual assertiveness on the safer sexual behavior of early adults. A structured questionnaire was completed by 291 university students from March 1 to April 31, 2016. Data were analyzed to calculate the direct and indirect effects of factors affecting safer sexual behavior using SPSS WIN 21.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. Final model fit indices were RMSEA .05, GFI .98, AGFI .94, NFI .96, and self-esteem, sexual communication for parents showed a direct effect on sexual assertiveness and safer sexual behavior of university students. Sexual assertiveness mediated the relationships among self-esteem, sexual communication for parents, and safer sexual behavior. Furthermore, it is shown that the sexual assertiveness significantly mediates the relation between the positive self-esteem, sexual open communication for parents and safer sexual behavior of early adults.

The Effect of Child-rearing Attitude and Parent-child Communication on Self-Esteem of Children (부모의 양육태도, 아동과의 의사소통이 아동의 자아존중감에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was designed to identify the factor contributing to self-esteem of children. Based on the survey results, it was found that the major factors influencing Self-esteem include school record(${\beta}=-.15$, p<.001), communication with mother(${\beta}=.31$, p<.001), child-rearing attitude(${\beta}=.16$, p=.002). These factors explained 32.6% of the self-esteem of children. Therefore these factors should be considered in the educational programs for development of children's self-esteem.

  • This study investigated effects of parent-related variables on children's coping with stress. Subjects were 409 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children(213 boys and 196 girls) selected from three elementary schools in Seoul and Incheon. Data were analyzed by frequency, mean, and hierachical multiple regression. Major findings were that among the inter-parental conflicts perceived by the children, self-blame and triangulation affects children's coping behavior resulting in children's aggressive and passive/avoidant behaviors. The more children experience parent-related stress, the more children show aggressive and passive/avoidant coping behaviors. With more open-communication in parent-child relations, children's coping shows more active and social support seeking coping behaviors during stress situations.

Analysis of Relationship between Parent Attachment and Career Maturity of Middle School Students (중학생들의 부모애착과 진로성숙도의 관계분석)

  • This study analyzed whether differences in individual characteristics and parental attachment affect the career maturity of middle school students in grades 1-3 in Asan, South Korea. Individual characteristics included gender, grade, grades, parental education, and economic level, while parental attachment included mutual trust, alienation, and communication. Career maturity included determinism, objectivity, readiness, independence, and assurance. Results showed there were significant differences in gender, grades, and economic level. Only gender differences affected attachment to mothers, with female students exhibiting stronger effects than male students. Grades that both the father and the mother showed differences. The economic level differed only in father's attachment. The effects of parental attachment on career maturity were found to be higher in career maturity with lower father's alienation and higher mother's mutual trust. Career maturity did not affect the assurance variable. Mother's communication affected determinism and mutual trust affected objectivity. Father's mutual trust and mother's communication affected readiness, and father's alienation showed a negative relationship. Mother's mutual trust positively affected independence. These results may be a valuable reference for understanding the behavioral psychology of adolescents and their parents. However, there is a limit to the generalizability of this study.

PSYCHOSOCIAL VULNERABILITIES OF CHILD-ADOLESCENT INTERNET ADDICTS (인터넷 중독 소아-청소년의 심리사회적 취약성)

  • This study investigated the psychosocial characteristics of children and adolescents who were addicted to internet. 1107 children and adolescents were administered several self-report inventories assessing internet addiction, internet expectancy, self-control, parent-adolescent communication, parent control of internet, peer relation, and loneliness. Results indicated that internet addicted adolescents had more expectancy for internet, less self-control, more dysfunctional communication with parents, and more withdrawn from peers than non-addicted. To determine relative contributions of these variables, multiple regression was conducted. It was demonstrated that internet expectancy, self-control, dysfunctional parentadolescent communication, and parent control of internet explained adolescent internet addiction.

Factors that Influencing Sexual Behavior in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 성행동에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • In modern society, the college students are experiencing more sexual behaviors, threatening their sexual health. The purpose of this study was to determine nursing college student's experiences with sexual behaviors and reveal its associated factors. Methods: As a descriptive correlation study, data was collected from 218 students in a nursing college. Data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Sexual behaviors, sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, sexual communication with parents and friends averaged 1.53 (range of score 0-3), .84 (0-1), 3.86 (1-5), 2.75 and 2.97 (1-5), respectively. Sexual behaviors had a positive correlation with sexual attitude. Sexual communication with parents had a positive correlation with sexual communication with friends and negative correlation with sexual attitude. Sexual knowledge, source of sex related information, past date experience, and sex communication with family were affecting factors on sexual behaviors. Conclusion: Sexual problems may have a negative impact on various aspects of life. Nurses should be aware of the wider considerations that need to be made in relation to the quality of life when caring clients with sexual problems. Therefore, professionals and sex educators must continue to be diligent and creative in their efforts to educate nursing students.
