  • Objective:There is increasing interest in the developmental relationship of parental psychopathology and parenting behavior and conduct disorder in adolescence. The object of this study is to investigate the role of parental rearing behaviors in influencing conduct disorder in adolescence comparing with normal adolescents. Methods:The author assessed 52 conduct disorder who met the DSM-Ⅳ criteria, and 144 normal control subjects using self-report questionnaires, 'The Parental Rearing Behavior Scale'. Results:The results of study were as follows:1) There is significant correlation between the conduct disorder group and the control group in the father’s anxious emotion subscale, not mother’s. 2) There is no significant correlation between the conduct Disorder group and the control group in other subscales such as affection, hostility, rational guideline and consistent limitation subscales. Conclusion:The results suggest that father’s psychopathology including overanxious parenting style will predispose a risk factor for conduct disorder than mother’s psychopathology.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting behaviors and parental insights by examining the effects of parental insights in addition to the main variables found to explain parenting behaviors through previous studies. In addition to the parental insight, this study examined the influence of past childhood experiences(perceived parenting behavior, family of origin' health) and parenting experience (marital satisfaction, parental role satisfaction) in current life. As a result of hierarchical regression analysis of 202 mothers of middle school students, all of the input variables were found to explain the parenting behavior significantly. In particular, parental insight was proved to have significant explanatory power on affection, rejection, regulation, and independence-oriented behavior among the sub-factors of parenting behavior except overprotective. Finally, the implications of this study and future research directions were discussed.

  • This study addressed ways in which poverty factors are associated with child physical aggression and how these relationships are moderated by parenting behavior. Using a longitudinal approach, parental poverty status was measured when children were 5 months; the Parenting Behaviour Questionnaire (Boivin et al., 2000) was administered when children were 17 months; and mothers reported child physical aggression behaviors when the children were 60 months. Using structure equation modeling analyses, the results of this study confirmed that parenting behavior is a mediator of the linkage between poverty and child physical aggression, showing the urgent need for early intervention for impoverished children.

  • In order to explore the impact of gender in the effects of age, temperament, and parenting on preschoolers' psychosocial problems, 339 preschoolers, 3-5 year old, were assessed using parent report measures of externalizing and internalizing behavior problems, temperament, and parenting. The results of ANOVA and hierarchical regression analyses are as follows. First, the main effects of age and gender for externalizing problems and the interaction effect of age and gender for internalizing problems were significant. Second, the important predictors of preschoolers' internalizing and externalizing problems were different by gender. In boys, Novelty Seeking(NS), Harm Avoidance(HA), and hostile parenting significantly predicted both problems. In girls, NS, HA, and warm parenting significantly predicted both problems. In addition, girls were more strongly influenced by parenting whereas boys were more influenced by their temperaments. The results of this study highlight some important suggestions for prevention strategies for preschoolers' behavioral problems. The implications and limitations of this study were further discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine psychological and behavioral characteristics of parents from low income families and to figure out the influence of these parents' characteristics upon children's problematic behaviors by comparing two-parent families and single-parent families. The subjects in this study were 193 parents who participated in a dream- start program geared toward low-income families. Their psychological and behavioral characteristics were tested, and their children's problem behaviors were investigated. As a result, the children from intact families in the low-income classes showed more problem behaviors when their parents faced heavier parental stress, and they showed less problem behaviors when their parents were more satisfied with their relationship with them. In contrast, the children from single-parent families in the low-income brackets showed less problem behaviors when their parents had better dietary habits and were more satisfied with their daily routine life, and they showed more problem behaviors when their parents were under heavier parental stress. The findings of the study seem to suggest that the development of parental and parent education programs is required to relieve the problem behaviors of children from the low-income classes and improve the parental behavior of their parents, and that a wide variety of assistance should be provided in consideration of the current marital status of parents as well.

  • The purpose of the present study was to estimate the effect of adolescents' depression on cell phone dependency and to identify mediating effects of parenting style and peer isolation. The study used data from the $6^{th}$ waves of 2015 KCYPS(Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey). Structural Equation Model(SEM) was conducted to examine the mediating effects of parenting style and peer isolation. The results showed that adolescents' depression had positive effects on cell phone dependency. In addition, the relationship between adolescents' depression and cell phone dependency was partially mediated by parenting style, not mediated by peer relationships. Based on these findings, further suggestions are provided to reduce adolescents' cell phone dependency by decreasing parent's over-involvement and improve adolescents' self control opportunities.
