  • In Korea, multi-functional senior residential complexes have become very popular since the end of 1990 by integrating the functions of nursing homes and health care facilities, so that the elderly can maintain their regular healthy life and receive health care when needed depending on their aging stage. Accordingly, it is increasingly important to conduct research on such multi-functional residential facilities. In this study, 6 cases of Korean senior residential complexes and 6 cases of comparable Japanese facilities, which were built earlier than Korea, are compared, and the following results are derived from the comparison. 1. In terms of the shared space, the parallel type and the unified type are found to share more space among complex types. Especially, the low-story concentration type and the eccentric type are found to share space the most. 2. In Korea, an average shared rate is found to be 46.8%; and the rates of a supplied-space, a common-shared-space, and a maintenance-space are found to be 29.73%, 36.33%, and 32.93%, respectively. In Japan's case, an average shared space is found to be 22.31%; and the corresponding rates for the above 3 spaces.

  • Due to the shortage of elderly care services in urban areas, multi-functional welfare facilities are proven to be very effective for delivering various service needs of elderly in Japan. Introduction of new longterm care policy for elderly in Korea would change many aspects of elderly care service facilities. Especially elderly home care services like adult daycare centers will expand drastically after beginning of elderly longterm care insurance. The purpose of this research is to study and analyze multi-functional welfare facilities in Japan focusing on the types of day service in those facilities. Planning of daycare centers in multi-functional welfare facilities for the elderly can be classified to 8 types. Those types are daycare centers with senior housing, longterm care insurance facilities, senior centers, small multi-function facility, medical facilities, educational facilities, community facilities and general housing projects. Each type has different benefits for the networking of services for the elderly. Design of daycare centers in multi-functional welfare facilities have distinctive features in entrance and user approach, space allocation and circulation planning. The study of daycare centers and multi-function planning should be followed to make better home care environments for the elderly in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a cognitive rehabilitation program based on the cognitive activities of the elderly with mild dementia using the weekly care facilities in Daegu city memory and to provide useful welfare services for the elderly with mild dementia. In Korea, there is not much development of community-based integrated intervention program for demented patients who are still in the present situation. The results of this study suggest that the cognitive rehabilitation program for the elderly with mild dementia is suitable to be applied as a group in the case of community based protective editorials and may be a basis for management of mild dementia patients. It seems that there may be differences in the appropriate intervention methods and effects. Therefore, it is expected that the individualized customized strategy will maximize the effect. Therefore, more specific and individualized nursing intervention program should be concurrently developed.

  • As studies on welfare systems for military families were only focused and limited on improvements of welfare facilities and military apartments, or psycho-therapies for families living apart, the supporting policies and efforts on creating jobs for military families(spouses) were insufficient till now. The best welfare for military spouses is the active well-being through the provision of employment opportunities, rather than providing certain rewards. Especially, South Korea should boost national competitiveness through increasing the engagement rate of women's economic activities. To expand these kinds of employment chances, actual plans to overcome the factors that restrict job opportunities for the families living apart, moving frequently, or living in rural areas should be urged. Accordingly, there should be a change of recognition toward military welfare service, enactment of applying discharged soldier's expanded employment programs for military spouses, cooperation with municipal governments and relevant institutions for creating jobs, and provision of promising job openings in association with a military reform. To achieve these, the cooperation of the government agencies, municipal governments, and military units are being emphasized.

  • With a rapid expansion of the elderly population, there is a greater demand for the construction of senior complexes. However, due to a land price increase and insufficient financial resources, accommodating such a demand is challenging. Also, as aging progresses, many elderlies tend to be isolated from local community, because of deteriorating health. As a result, constructing senior complexes is becoming an important community project. The construction of senior complexes in Korea has been started since early 2000, so it is still in the beginning stage in Korea. However, in the case of Japan, they have more experience in building such buildings. Therefore, in this study, 49 senior complexes in Japan were analysed, and the following spatial characteristics were derived. 1. By classifying senior complexes largely into a complex type with similar facilities and a complex type with different facilities, 12 types were derived. Depending on the types of facilities, basic sharing rooms and selectively sharing rooms by need are suggested. 2. Depending on 4 characteristics, such as spatial composition, entrance type, circulation form, and complex facility type, 17 types of senior complexes were derived, and the characteristics of each type are presented.

  • Purpose: While Japan undergoes super aged society, Japanese Elderly Facilities are trying to keep elderly residents from social isolation and expand regional interaction. Methods: This study analyzes regional linkage characteristics through 8 cases of Aichi-Elderly Facilities which realize regional interaction and symbiosis(life together) between various generations by visiting. Result: 1) Most researched facilities except SO provide and share opportunity for interaction with community and residents through space for regional interaction including cafe and various programs and interactive settings. 2) The facility which seeks regional linkage through Mixed-use of facilities can devide into (1) Mixed-use of facilities easy to found, (2) Addition of housing function (NM, SM, DM) and (3) Mixed-use with different facilities(HY, GM) 3) The characteristics of interaction and symbiosis between generations are (1) to adopt concept of life together to have interaction possibility with young generation and children: most studied facilities except SO (2) to establish elderly residence into facility to have interaction(FE, SM, GM) or place family room or single room into elderly residence (NM, DM, BN) (3) to disperse small facilities into community (FE) or facility or community realizing symbiosis through various facility arrangement (SM, GM). 4) Therefore, this study can categorize (1) Program network, (2) Temporary interaction, (3) Symbiosis residence, (4) Symbiosis community according to characteristics which regional linkage has. Implication: Regional Linkage is an important concept to improve social interaction in community-based facilities. It is a thought-provoking concept to Korean elderly facilities because Korean facilities are still far from a city and in isolated environment.

  • This study attempts to deduce the necessity and validity of complexation, and suggests complexation through complexation suitability evaluations as follows. First, the concept and current state of leisure facilities for the elderly and elementary facilities and architectural complexation were investigated through theoretical considerations. Second, the target schools for complexation of 'elementary school-leisure facility for the elderly' were selected. The aspects of facility introduction of an elementary school, teacher support facility, convenience facility for the disabled, safety and security facilities as well as school facility accessibility were investigated on the basis of the data attained from theoretical considerations. Third, the feasibility of complexation of leisure facilities for the elderly was reviewed, based on the investigated data on complexation-targeted elementary school. Regarding school building and support facilities, with a focus on leisure programs for the elderly, the availability and number of rooms, extra numbers of regular classrooms and the room condition were assessed on the basis of the analysis of operational perspective of each facility. The convenience facilities for the disabled were examined by classifying them into interventional facility in consideration of facilities for the elderly, pursuant to the provisions in the convenience promotion assurance act for the disabled, elderly and pregnant women. Safety and security facilities were evaluated in an effort to assess the safety issue of the elderly and children. The result of the evaluation of the 6 elementary schools in Seong-buk county based on the above-mentioned four measurement standards shows that they scored 107~124 points out of the total 155 points, with the average of 118.5 points. This is more than the medium score and shows the possible complexation of the elementary school facilities as the leisure facilities for the elderly, and at the same time it may lead each school to find out the elements conducive to enhancing the complexation as a result of the evaluation. Through the evaluation data, I expect that we contribute to promoting the process of the evaluation of the appropriateness of complexation and the efficient complexation.
