  • This study was performed to make it possible to adjust milk production records which are changing with days in milk more accurately as developing new 305-day adjustment factors considering current circumstance and to offer easier application by converting adjustment factors to formulas. Total 4,264,347 records were used in this analysis after eliminating unusual value and data was classified by first parity and over second parity. Herd-year effects were classified with 2,878 and 19,783 classes in first parity and over second parity, respectively and number of subclass of age-calving season-lactation stage effects were 136 (age 2, calving season 4, lactation stage 17). For calculation of least square mean, SAS GLM was used and multiplicative adjustment factors were developed. The result of error analysis, deviations between means of adjusted yields and cumulated yields were the lowest in new adjustment factor which was developed in this study comparing with other adjustment factors which were developed in the past (94', 02') in first parity and in over second parity, results of adjustment factors which were developed in 2002 and this study were similar. For easier application, formulas of 305-day adjustment factors were developed using SAS NLIN.

  • The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine the mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, the source of measurement error must be identified and eliminated. During the experiment, specimens were placed between the incident and the transmit bar. Contact friction between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this study, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on the test results. In the SHPB test, the stress measured by the transmitted bar is assumed to be the flow stress of the test specimen. However, performing numerical experiments, it was shown that the stress measured by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress of the specimen are approximately equal. On the other hand, when the contact surface is not frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress are no longer equal. The effect of friction on the difference between the flow stress and axial stress was investigated.

  • Water content of subgrade soil in water supply systems has a large effect on performance. Many researchers lately make use of time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes to measure the soil water content of subgrade soil from monitoring. The laboratory calibration test of TDR probe should be performed with soil field, because TDR probe can cause an error by type, gradation, density, and temperature of soil. This study shows the laboratory calibration test using TDR CS616, TDR-P3, TDR-T3. The calibration equations of TDR were then proposed. It was confirmed from the study that the data of TDR probe monitored in field could be used to estimate the freezing, unfrozen water content, and matric suction of soil.

  • The flame speed correlation considering thermal-hydraulic phenomena under severe accidents is proposed and correction coefficients are defined. This correlation modifies the pressure dependency in Iijima-Takeno correlation and adds the steam suppression effects to it in the anticipated hydrogen and steam concentration ranges under severe accidents. The existing models of flame speed due to hydrogen combustion under severe accidents are based on the experiments which were performed merely at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. They have difficulty in predicting a accurate flame speed in a case of high temperature and pressure during severe accidents. Thus the flame structure is assumed as a prerequisite to the reliable determination of flame speed and theoretical model is developed. To examine the validity, flame speeds in various conditions calculated by this model are compared with those obtained by the calculation of the existing correlations of the codes such as improved HECTR and MAAP. Also the steam suppression ratio is quantified and the steam suppression coefficient is defined as a composition of mixture. Initial temperature and pressure dependencies are investigated and correction coefficents are determined. More experimental studies can be recommended to improve this correlation to its further works.

  • To design the crown wall of rubble-mound breakwaters, the horizontal wave load should be available, but determining this load remains difficult. Lee et al. proposed modification factors for Goda's formula for the horizontal wave pressures on acrown wall. The empirical formula by Lee et al. was based on a two-dimensional model test with a relatively narrow armour crest width in front of the crown wall. In this study, a series of experiments at the same facility were conducted on the horizontal wave pressures on the crown wall of a rubble-mound breakwater with a wide armour crest width. As a result, the pressures of the unprotected part of the crown wall were nearly identical to the narrow crest width. However, the pressures of the protected part tended to decrease with a change in the armour crest width. From the experimental results, the horizontal pressure modification factors of Goda's formula including the armour crest width effect are suggested here and are likely applicable to practical designs of the crown walls of rubble-mound breakwaters covered with tetrapods.

  • It is required to estimate reliable design floods for hydraulic structures in order to respond more effectively to recent climate change. In this study, differences of design floods that were estimated the flood frequency analysis (FFA) and the design rainfall-runoff analysis (DRRA) were analyzed. In Korea, due to lack of measured flood data, the DRRA method is used in practice to determine the design floods. However, assuming the design floods estimated by the FFA as true values, the DRRA method over estimated the design floods by 79%. Thus, this study proposed a practical method to estimated design flood in ungauaged watersheds through regressive adjustment of flood quantiles estimated from the DRRA method. To this end, after investigating the differences between design floods acquired from the FFA and the DRRA method, nonlinear regression analyses were performed to develop the adjustment formulas for 8 large-dam watersheds. Applying the adjustment formula, the accuracy was improved by 65.0% on average over the DRRA method. In addition, when considering the watershed size, the adjustment formula increases the accuracy by 2.1%p on average over when not considering the watershed size.

  • Quantitative estimate of manganese nodules based on the operation of a free fall grab (FFG) needs to be corrected because of its less retrieval ability. Previously, the correction parameter of the nodule abundance collected by FFG was calculated based on the image analysis of the photos of bottom sediment in the northern sector of the nodule exploration area of Korea in the NE equatorial Pacific. However, nodules in the southern sector are commonly covered by sediment, which may prevent the use of the correction parameter estimated by photographic techniques. In this study, we attempted dual nodule sampling at the same location by different equipments (i.e. box corer (BC) and FFG) to examine the previous correction parameter of nodule abundance for FFG operation. During the exploration cruises in 2007 to 2009, Mn-nodules were collected from 40 stations both by BC and FFG in the southern sector. The correlation analysis between BC and FFG operations revealed that the BC collected nodules 1.43 times larger than FFG. Our result suggests that the correction parameter of 1.43 can be applied for collection of FFG data to estimate Mn-nodule distribution in the southern sector. The obtained parameter is similar to the previous parameter (1.42~1.45) calculated by the image analysis method, indicating an usefulness of new correction parameter suggested by this study.
