  • This study critically reviewed whether the South Korean press reported the issue of conflict between South Korea and Japan in a way consistent with their journalistic values. To this end, this study conducted frame analysis and textual analysis for the articles of three press(Chosun Ilbo, Hankyoreh and KBS) from the three major branches of conflict (Korea's Supreme Court's ruling on forced labor compensation in October 2018, the Japanese government's decision to regulate exports in July 2019 and the Korean government's decision to end GSOMIA in August 2019) to one week. There were many superficial reports of simply relaying conflicts around the occurrence and outcome of events, and there were few reports that analyzed the context in depth or suggested alternatives. And partisan reporting, which is cited as a key issue in the Korean journalism, has been strongly revealed in the midst of a conflict between Korea and Japan, a national emergency situation.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how South Korean TV news programs represent the image of North Korean defector through analyzing South Korean TV news contents portraying North Korean defector. In order to conduct this research, the study analyzes the main subjects of the South Korean TV news contents, the image of characters on the TV news contents, and frames which the TV news contents mainly used. According to the results of this study, the TV news programs represent the positive image of South Korean government whereas they criticize North Korean government while representing North Korean defector issues. However, the TV news programs showed no interest in real problems which the North Korean defectors are experiencing. Further, the findings of this study are very similar to the results of previous studies that were analyzing the representation of news media about minority groups including North Korean defectors. Most studies analyzing how news media represent minority groups show that the groups have been identified not by their own opinions and relations but predominant culture and lifestyles in the society, and they are also represented not by their own voice but predominant perspectives of the society.

  • This study conducted a frame analysis of the news reports of Chonbuk bus strike broadcasted via local broadcasting companies of the Jeollabuk-do. The results showed that all Chonbuk local televisions gave more emphasis on 'episodic' frame by emphasizing demonstrations and struggles between capital and labor. In the case of content frames, news reports did not present the solution or an alternative of the strike, and the democratic process frame or the institutional improvement frame was not embossed. Therefore, local television news of Chonbuk bus strike was insufficient in reporting causes and backgrounds of the strike. Also, it displayed existing press routine in reporting the issue of social conflict such as a bus strike.

This study was to designed to relate changes of pedestrians' crossing characteristics as a functions of flashing green signal timings. A field survey was conducted to collect pedestrian preference and safety and it was examined by signal operation experiment. Two versions of new pedestrian signal timings were compared to the existing pedestrian signal timings. The results indicated that the number of pedestrians who starts to cross during flashing green signals was significantly decreased when flashing green signals started at 1/2 or 2/3 point of crossing. However, the number of pedestrians who remain in the crossing during red signals was significantly increased when flashing green signals started at 2/3 point of crossing. This study concludes that starting flashing green signals at 1/2 point of crossing is the safest. Also, implication and directions for its practical relevance were discussed.

  • This paper regards former Samsung lawyer Kim Yong-Chul's action of claiming Samsung Group's slush fund as typical Whistle-Blowing from inside. News frames in KBS, SBS TV were examined through comparative analysis. In formal feature, 'episodic news frame' hold an absolute majority in both stations. From news sources, the group of whistle-blower such as lawyer Kim Yong-Chul and civic groups was confronted with Samsung and state authorities including the Prosecutor, financial agencies. Analysis on the theme of news coverages demonstrated 5 frames: 'public announcing frame', 'news of conflict frame' 'demanding a close inquiry frame', 'declaration of conscience frame', 'causing social upheaval frame', Analysis result shows that 'public announcing frame' was most frequently used in reporting and there was distinction between KBS and SBS in 'declaration of conscience frame' and 'causing social upheaval frame'. Relatively KBS preferred 'declaration of conscience frame' and SBS would use 'causing social upheaval frame', from which reciprocal relation as media ownership could be analogized. Both media tend to make light of in-depth news coverages on structural issues or essential settlement and it is shown that both stations treated this situation with intriguing audiences as stressing sensitive parts in this event. Follow-up of changing process of 'declaration of conscience frame' through diachronic analysis on framing informs that additional exposure of 'Lee Yong Chul', former secretary in Nov 19, 2007 influenced increasing of frequency of using 'declaration of conscience frame'. However, news reporting on whistle-blower in KBS and SBS generally adheres to passive attitude of following changes in the surroundings rather than playing an active role in improving social recognition on whistle-blowing, which can induce to the spread of negative feature on it. Thus it is assumed that terrestial television broadcasting should regard whistle-blowing as contradiction in social structures and active depth reporting seems to be neded for improving social recognition on whistle-blowing.

Consequently, the three countries showed clearly different perspectives on the same historical event. These distinctions were caused from national interest rather than political ideology of the newspaper.

  • This study explores the ways that newspapers report the administrations' policies of 'university reform' from February 2008 to December 2015 through critical discourse analysis. As results, Donga-ilbo and Chosun-ilbo produce the discourse that the crisis of universities is so real and dangerous that it brings about the crisis of our nation, and that the current university systems should be changed into neoliberal systems because it is the critical reason of the crisis. Using various discursive strategies, they construct their reports as objective, real and embodying general goods and then successfully build the neoliberal discourse on university reform as commonsensical and natural. They finally acquire the discursive hegemony for university reform. Kyunghyang-shinmun and Hankyoreh-shinmun produce the anti-discourse against that of Donga-ilbo and Chosun-ilbo. However, they can not develop substantial hegemony struggles for the discourse of university reform because of the limitations of their discourse in terms of quantity and quality and the social and press structures overwhelmingly inclined for neo-liberalism.

  • In some cases, despite the pedestrian jaywalking pedestrian traffic lights to red, or even wait for the walk signal to stand down in the driveway. If this is the case may be liable to lead to a traffic accident. Thus, using an infrared sensor wateuna adopted the approach that the warning announcement when a pedestrian enters the driveway, curved pedestrian crossing the intersection in this case, it is difficult to install. In this paper, we propose a Fitness referral system utilizes a built-in sensor of the Android mobile devices. For this purpose, the sensor is a proximity sensor using an acceleration sensor. The proximity sensor has a number of disadvantages compared to the high precision battery power, the acceleration sensor accuracy, fast response time, on the other hand, the disadvantage is the lower. Close to reduce battery consumption of the sensor, BMI of the user sensor control mechanism and increase the accuracy of the acceleration sensor (Body Mass Index) obtained after the index was applied to the recommendation algorithm, which like the movement mechanism.

  • In this study, we analyzed the television news frames related to private school irregularities. Television broadcasting stations have not dealt with underlying problems of private school irregularities, but their reporting have been focused more on stating the situations. While Public announcing frame, Interference and solutions frame, Moral hazard frame and Protests and strikes frame have been applied in reporting, Autonomy highlighted frame and Publicity highlighted frame which are fundamental to the existence of private schools hardly appeared. In particular, the adhesion between private schools and political power has been continuously pointed out to be a cause of raising problems, whereas articles with such perspectives were hard to find. As a result, television broadcasting stations are required to change the way in reporting of private school irregularities in order for a lively discussion about them as the social agenda.
