  • This paper describes a domain decomposition method of parallel finite element analysis for elasto-plastic structural problems. As a parallel numeral algorithm for the finite element analysis, the authors have utilized the domain decomposition method combined with an iterative solver such as the conjugate gradient method. Here the domain decomposition method algorithm was applied directly to elasto-plastic problem. The present system was successfully applied to three-dimensional elasto-plastic structural problems.

  • The computing environment has changed rapidly to enable large-scale finite element models to be analyzed at the PC or workstation level, such as multi-core CPU, optimal math kernel library implementing BLAS and LAPACK, and popularization of direct sparse solvers. In this paper, the design considerations on a parallel finite element code for shared memory based multi-core CPU system are proposed; (1) the use of optimized numerical libraries, (2) the use of latest direct sparse solvers, (3) parallelism using OpenMP for computing element stiffness matrices, and (4) assembly techniques using triplets, which is a type of sparse matrix storage. In addition, the parallelization effect is examined on the time-consuming works through a large scale finite element model.

  • Power and signal transmission using electromagnetic waves are essential in modern times, and a guided structure is needed to transmit electromagnetic waves efficiently through the desired path. This paper performed an electromagnetic simulation using the in-house code for the 2-D/3-D waveguide using the finite element method. The accuracy of the analysis was verified by comparing it with the results of HFSS, a representative electromagnetic wave simulation software. In addition, the performance of the Absorbing Boundary Condition (ABC), which is essential to truncate the infinite computational domain for computational electromagnetics, was analyzed. Finally, the parallelization technique was applied to accelerate the simulation speed, demonstrating performance improvement.

  • A hybrid finite element method is presented for a characterization of scattering an radiation properties of microstrip patch and arrays residing in a cavity recessed in a ground plane. The technique combines the finite element and boundary integral methods to formulate a system for the solution of fields at the aperture and the scattering field and radar cross sections at free space. By virture of the finite element method, the proposed technique is applicable to patch antennas and arrays residing on or embeded in a layered dielectric loss/lossless substrate and is also capable of treating various feed configuration. Several numerical results are presented demonstrating the validity, efficiency and capability of the technique.

  • Effective computational strategies have been proposed in the evaluation of stiffness matrices of rigid-plastic finite element method widely used in simulation of metal forming processes. The stiffness matrices are expressed as the sum of stiffness matrices evaluated by reduced integration and Liu's stabilization matrices which control the occurrence os zero-energy mode due to excessive reduced integration. The proposed method has been applied to the solution of fundamental 3-dimensional problems. The results clarified that the deformed mesh configuration was remarkably stabilized and computation speed attained about 3 times as fast as that of conventional 3-dimensional analyses. Furthermore, computation speed increases by a factor 60 when parallel computation is introduced. This speed has a tendency to increase as the total degree of freedom increases. As a result, this rigid-plastic finite element method enables us to analyze real 3-dimensional forming processes with practically acceptable computation time.

  • In this paper, damage induced acoustic emission in the composite plate in numerically simulated by using the three dimensional finite element method and explicit time integration. Acoustic source is modeled by equivalent volume source. To verify the proposed method, dynamic displacements due to the elastic wave are compared with the experiment when the fiber is broken in the single fiber embedded isotropic plate. For the laminated composite plates, the results are compared between homogenized model and DNS approach which models fibers and matrix separately. To capture high frequencies in the elastic wave, small time step size and a large number of meshes are required. The parallel computing technology is introduced to solve a large scale problem efficiently.

  • A static/implicit finite element code for sheet forming (ITAS3D) is parallelized on IBM SP 6000 multi-processor computer. Computing-load-balanced domain decomposition method and the direct solution method at each subdomain (and interface) equation are developed. The system of equations for each subdomain are constructed by condensation and calculated on each processor. Approximated operation counts are calculated to set up the nonlinear equation system for balancing the compute load on each subdomain. Th esquare cup tests with several numbers of elements are used in demonstrating the performance of this parallel implementation. This procedure are proved to be efficient for moderate number of processors, especially for large number of elements.

  • In this paper, a new parallel computation method, which fully utilize the parallel processors both in mesh generation and FEM calculation for 2D/3D process simulation, is presented. High performance parallel FEM and parallel linear algebra solving technique was showed that excessive computational requirement of memory size and CPU time for the three-dimensional simulation could be treated successively. Our parallelized numerical solver successfully interpreted the transient enhanced diffusion (TED) phenomena of dopant diffusion and irregular shape of R-LOCOS within 15 minutes. Monte Carlo technique requires excessive computational requirement of CPU time. Therefore high performance parallel solving technique were employed to our cascade sputter simulation. The simulation results of Our sputter simulator allowed the calculation time of 520 sec and speedup of 25 using 30 processors. We found the optimized number of ion injection of our MC sputter simulation is 30,000.

  • This study presents the formulation of beam transition elements and transition zone elements for the effective finite element analysis of the transition regions of coupled wall structures. Beam transition element can be described as the quasi beam element which is replaced by an equivalent plane stress element, keeping equally, the basic behavior of beam element, based on the kinematic and force constraints between beam and wall element. These beam transition elements solve the incompatibility related to different degrees of freedom between beam and wall element in transition regions. Also, the stiffness matrices of transition zone elements which are directly connected with beam transition elements in transition regions can be derived from the equivalent constraint conditions. These elements provide the reasonable mesh grading schemes for transition regions and can be usefully applied to the transition regions of all structures that the interactions of wall and beam element are considered.
