  • One of the most important design concept for reinforced concrete structures is to achieve a ductile failure mode, and also moment redistribution for economic design is possible in case that adequate ductility is provided. Flexural ductility index is, therefore, used as a reference for possibility of moment redistribution as well as for prediction of flexural behavior of designed R.C. structures. Ductility index equations, however, provide approximate values due to the linear concrete compressive stress assumption at the tension steel yielding state. Theoretically more exact ductility index is calculated by a numerical analysis with the realistic stress-strain curves for concrete and steel to be compared with the result from tire ductility index equations. Variation of ductility index for the selected variables and the reasonable maximum tension steel ratio for doubly reinforced section are investigated. A moment-curvature curve model is also proposed for future research on moment redistribution.

  • The Janggunbong area(this study area) at the central-south part in the North Sobaegsan Massif, Korea, consists mainly of Precambrian(Wonnam and Yulri Formations)-Paleozoic [Joseon Supergroup(Jangsan Quarzite, Dueumri Formation and Janggum Limestone) and Pyeongan Group(Jaesan and Dongsugok Formations)] metasedimentary rocks and Mesozoic granitoid(Chunyang granite.) This study is to interpret geological structure of the North Sobaegsan Massif in the Jang-gunbong area by analysing rock-structure and microstructure of the constituent rocks. It indicates that its geological structure was formed at least by four phases of deformation after the formation of gneissosity(S0) in the Wonnam Formation and bedding plane(S0) in the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks. The first phase deformation(D1) formed tight isoclinal fold(F1). Its axial plane(S1) strikes east-west and steeply dips north. Its axis (L1) subhorizontally plunges east-west. The second phase deformation(D2), which was related to ductile shear deformation, formed stretching lineation(L2) and shear foliation(S2). The sense of the shear movement indicates dextral strike-slip shearing(top-to-the east shearing). The third phase deformation(D3) formed open inclined fold(F3). Its axial plane(S3) strikes east-west and moderately or gently dips north. Its axis(L3) subhorizontally plunges east-west. The F3 fold reoriented the original north-dipping S1 foliation and D2 shear sense into south-dipping S1 foliation(top-to-the west shear sense on this foliation) at its a limb. The four phase of deformation(D4) formed asymmetric-type open inclined fold(F4) of NE-vergence with NW striking axial plane(S4) and NW-NNW plunging axis(L4). The F4 fold partly reoriented pre-D4 structural elements with east-west trend into those with north-south trend. Such reorientation is recognized mainly in the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks.

  • Recently, various reinforced concrete joints have been used in reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, it is important to grasp the tensile properties of the spliced rebar. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on Grade 60 D22(#7), D29(#9), and two kinds of couplers manufactured according to ASTM A615 standard for evaluating ductility of coupler joints. The strain was measured using an image processing method more accurate and capable of measuring at various points freely. As the result of uniaxial tensile test, it was possible to calculate the stress-strain relationship and the longitudinal strain distribution according to the stress stages and it was founded that the average strain becomes lower as more occupying the coupler joint portions in the same gauge length. In addition, the empirical equations are proposed to account for the effect of the length of the coupler on the ultimate strain and the rupture strain.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the tensile behaviors of PE(Polyethylene) fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composites with different combinations of micro silica sand and normal sand(river sand) with maximum particle size of 4.75 mm. Flow test result indicated the increase of flowability with higher replacement ratio of river sand. There was no noticeable difference in the mean compressive strength with different replacement ratio of river sand, but the variation in the compressive strength increased as higher amount of river sand was adopted for the replacement. The difference in the uniaxial tensile strength was negligible, but the tensile strain capacity was significantly influenced by the replacement ratio of river sand. It is thought that increased density of multiple cracks induced improved tensile strain capacity when higher percentage of river sand was adopted for fine aggregate. The deviation in the strain capacity increased as the replacement ratio of river sand was higher, as in the compressive strength. This study presented the feasibility of using normal sand instead of micro silica sand for highly ductile cementitious composites with equivalent or better uniaxial tensile performance, even though it might increase the deviation in the performance.

  • Experiments were performed to study the cyclic behavior of framed steel walls with thin web plates. Five specimens of single-bay and three-story steel plate walls were tested for cyclic lateral load. The parameters for the test specimens included the plate thickness and the column strength. Based on the test results, the strength, deformability, and energy dissipation capacity of the framed steel walls were studied. The test results showed that the behavioral characteristics of the framed steel walls with thin web plates were different in many aspects from those of the conventional braced frame, and the steel wall with a stiffened web plate exhibited cantilever action, high strength, and low ductility. With the framed steel plate walls, local plate buckling and tension-field action developed in the thin web plates, and plastic deformation was uniformly distributed along the wall's height. As a result, the framed steel plate walls exhibited combined flexural and shear deformation, but they also showed high strength and energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, such walls have high deformability, which was equivalent to that of the conventional moment frame. Frame members such as columns and beams, however, must be designed to resist the tension-field action of the thin web plates. If the column does not have sufficient strength, and if its sections are not compact enough, the overall strength of the framed steel wall might be significantly decreased by the development of the soft-story mechanism. The framed steel walls with thin web plates have advantages, such as high deformability and high strength. Therefore, they can be used as ductile elements in earthquake-resistant systems.

  • For the purpose of developing a PE fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composite having high tensile strain capacity more than 2% under the condition of containing aggregates with large particle size, this study investigated the tensile behavior of composites according to the particle size and distribution of aggregates in the composite. Compared with the mixture containing silica sand of which particle size is less than 0.6 mm, mixtures containing river sand and/or gravel with the maximum particle size of 2.36 mm, 4.75 mm, 5.6 mm, 6.7 mm were considered in the experimental design. The particle size distributions of aggregates were adjusted for the optimized distribution curves obtained from modified A&A model by blending different sizes of aggregates. All the mixtures presented clear strain-hardening behavior in the direct tensile tests. The mixtures with the blended aggregates to meet the optimum curves of aggregate size distributions showed higher tensile strain capacity than the mixture with silica sand. It was also found that the tensile strain capacity was improved as the maximum size of aggregate increased which resulted in wider particle size distribution. The mixtures with the maximum size of 5.6 mm and 6.7 mm presented very high tensile strain capacities of 4.83% and 5.89%, respectively. This study demonstrated that it was possible to use coarse aggregates in manufacturing highly ductile fiber-reinforced cementitous composite by adjusting the particle size distribution.

  • The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.

  • In this study a model for the constitutive relation of a plane concrete is proposed using a micromechariical model. In this model a precursor crack is assumed to exist in the aggregate-cement paste interface, and the LEFM is used to predict the nucleation of the bond cracks and the grow th of mortar cracks. For computational convenience the bond crack-mortar crack configuration is transformed into a straight crack with a point force in the middle. 'The overall compliance and the cons, titutive relation are predicted from the damage due to microcracks, and the predicted stress-strain curves are compared with some experimental data. According to the results, the model predictions are better for under tensile loading than under compression, for high, strength concrete than for normal strength concrete.
