Brittle materials such as rocks and concretes exhibit large strain-rate dependency under dynamic loading conditions. This means that the mechanical properties of such materials can significantly be varied according to load velocity. Thus, the strain-rate dependency is recognized as one of the most important considerations in solving problems of blast engineering or rock dynamics. Unfortunately, however, studies for characterizing the dynamic properties of domestic rocks and other brittle materials are still insufficient in the country. In this study, dynamic tensile tests were conducted using the Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus to characterize the dynamic properties of Geochang granite and high-strength concrete specimens. The dynamic Brazilian disc test, which is suggested by ISRM, and the spalling method were applied. In general, the latter is believed to have some advantages in experiments under high-strain rate deformation. It was found from the tests that there were no significant difference between the dynamic tensile strengths obtained from the two different test methods for the two materials given. However, this was not the expected result before the tests. Actually, authors expected that there be some differences between them. Hence, it is thought that further investigations are needed to clarify this results.
In the conventional load transfer analysis for a steel pipe drilled shaft, it was assumed that the concrete's strain is the same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by the formular as prescribed by specification is used in the calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculation by conventional method differed to some extent from the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a steel pipe drilled shaft could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile component was proposed. In this study, a new approach for load transfer measurement of large diameter drilled shafts was suggested ; the strain of each pile component(i. e., steel and concrete) was measured by DRS(Deformable Rod Sensor), the elastic modulus was determined by the uniaxial compression test for concrete specimens made at test site and a value of elastic modulus was evaluated as average tangential modulus corresponding to the stress level of the (0.2-0.6)$f_{ck}$. Field application was confirmed by the results of load transfer measurement tests for 3 drilled shafts. The errors for calculated pile head load were -11 ∼16% and 3.4% separately.
Since the development of Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) by Shi (1984), there has been much improvement in the theory and programs. These, however, are all based on the assumption of a two-dimensional plane strain or plane stress state; and because a rock block system is a three-dimensional problem, a two-dimensional analysis has limited application. So a three-dimensional analysis is required in the design of rock slopes and underground spaces where three-dimensional discontinuities dominate stability. In this study three-dimensional DDA program is developed using the Shi's two-dimensional theory and program, and the two cases of three-dimensional block are analysed. The program is applied to one sliding-face blocks and wedge sliding and it gives the good results comparing to the exact solution. Multi-block cases will be analysed for many other application soon.
In the conventional axial load transfer analysis for composite piles (i.e., steel pipe pile filled with concrete), it was assumed that the concrete's strain is same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by formular as prescribed by specification is used in calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculated by conventional method had some difference with the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a composite pile could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile components was proposed. In this study, the verification test for DRS (Deformable Rod Sensor) developed to measure the strain of each pile component (i.e., the steel and the concrete) was performed. In the calculation of pile axial load using the DRS, elastic modulus of concrete could be determined by the uniaxial compression test for the concrete cylinder samples made in the test site and an average tangential modulus in the stress range of (0.2∼0.6)f$_ck$ was taken.

A finite element dynamic simulation is performed to gain an insight about the stiffened blast wall structures subjected to blast loading. The simulation was verified using qualitative and quantitative comparisons for different materials. Based on in-depth examination of blast simulation recordings, dynamic behaviors occurred in the blast wall against the explosion are determined. Subsequent simulation results present that the blast wall made of the high performance steel performs much better in the shock absorption. In this paper, the existing finite element shock analysis using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study the dynamic response of the stiffened blast wall made of the high-performance steel considering high strain-rate effects. The numerical results for various parameters were verified by comparing different material models with dynamic effects occurred in the stiffened blast wall from the explosive simulation.
The high temperature deformation behavior of microalloyed hot forging steels has been examined as a function of the temperature, the strain rate, and the alloying element by using high temperature compression test. The high temperature deformation mechanism, which was obtained by analyzing the flow stress-strain curve and microstructure, could be considered to dynamic recrystallization. The peak stress of Nb-V-Mo steel was more increased and the dynamic recrystallization of Nb-V-Mo steel was faster than those of Nb-V steel. The peak stress of 1.2Mn-0.09Nb steel was more increased and the dynamic recrystallization of 1.2Mn-0.09Nb was delayed a little bit than those of 1.0Mn-0.05Nb. The peak stress of C-Nb-V steel was more increased and the dynamic recrystallization of C-Nb-V steel was delayed than those of C-steel. The constitutive equation of high temperature deformation had a power law type. The grain size of dynamic recrystallization was refined as the Zener-Hollomon parameter was increased. The relation of the dynamic recrystallization grain size and Zener-Hollomon parameter could be quantified to power law.

The three truss models(equilibrium truss model, Mohr compatibility truss model, and the soften truss model) based on a rotating angle is called the rotating-angle model. The three rotating-angle models have a common weakness: they are incapable of predicting the so-called "contribution of concrete". To take into account this "contribution of concrete", the modern truss model(MCFT, STM) treats a cracked reinforced concrete element as a continuous material. By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, MTM is capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete structures composed of membrane element. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the solution of proposed model incorporated with failure criteria. This algorithm is used to analyze the behavior of reinforced membrane element using the results of Hsu test.
Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) is a general test equipment for measuring the mechanical properties of high modulus metal and composite materials at high strain rate. However, for the soft plastic material, it is difficult to hold the specimen and achieve dynamic stress equilibrium due to the weak transmitted signals. In this study, SHPB test apparatus were designed to measure accurately the high strain rate stress-strain curve of the soft plastic materials by changing the incident bar materials and the shape of the specimen holder parts. In addition, to verify the high strain-rate tensile strain data obtained from SHPB, the strain distribution of the specimen was measured and analyzed with a high-speed camera and the digital image correlation (DIC), which was compared with the strain history measured from SHPB.
Laboratory creep experiments show that compaction of unconsolidated shale is an irrecoverable process caused by viscous time-dependent deformation. Using Perzyna's viscoplasticity framework combined with the modified Cam-clay theory, we found the constitutive equation expressed in the form of strain rate as a power law function of the ratio between the sizes of dynamic and static yield surfaces. We derived the volumetric creep strain at a constant hydrostatic pressure level as a logarithmic function of time, which is in good agreement with experimental results. The determined material constants indicate that the yield stress of the shale increases by 6% as strain rate rises by an order of magnitude. This demonstrates that the laboratory-based prediction of yield stress (and porosity) may result in a significant error in estimating the properties in situ.

In this study, flexural tests of prestressed high strength spun concrete (PHC) piles reinforced with infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars were conducted, where the longitudinal rebar ratio and the presence of sludge formed on the inner surface of PHC pile were set as key test variables. A total of six PHC pile specimens were manufactured, and their flexural behaviors including failure mode, crack pattern, longitudinal strain distribution in a section and end slip between external PHC pile and infilled concrete were measured and discussed in detail. The test results revealed that the flexural stiffness and strength increased as the longitudinal rebar ratio became larger, and that the sludge formed on the inner surface of PHC pile did not show any detrimental effect on the flexural performance. In addition to the experimental approach, this study presents a nonlinear flexural analysis model considering compatibility conditions and strain and stress distributions of the PHC piles and infilled concrete. The rationality of the nonlinear flexural analysis model was verified by comparing it with test results, and it appeared that the proposed model well evaluated the flexural behavior of PHC piles reinforced with infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars with a good accuracy.
