  • Numerical predictions of a fully developed turbulent flow through a square duct ($30mm{\times}30mm$) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape plus interrupted ribs are respectively conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and flow patterns. A rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/$D_h$) of 0.067 and a lengthto-hydraulic diameter(L/$D_h$) of 30 are considered at Reynolds number ranging 8,900 to 29,000. The interrupted ribs are axially arranged on the bottom wall. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 28 mm, length of 900 mm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite walls of the square channel. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and significant improvements can be achieved with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs.

  • Optical coherence tomography(OCT) is an emerging medical diagnostic tool that draws great attention in medical and biological fields. It has a 10-100 times higher spatial resolution than that of the clinical ultrasound but lower imaging depth such as 1-2 mm. In order to image internal organs, OCT needs an endoscopic probe. In this paper, the principle of Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography with high-speed imaging capability was introduced. An OCT endoscope based on MEMS technology was developed. It was attached to the Fourier-domain OCT system to acquire three-dimensional tomographic images of gastrointestinal tract of New Zealand white rabbit. The endoscope had a two-axis scanning mirror that was driven by electrostatic force. The mirror stirred an incident light to sweep two-dimensional plane by scanning. The outer diameter of the endoscope was 6 mm and the mirror diameter was 1.2 mm. A three-dimensional image rendered by 200 two-dimensional tomographs with $200{\times}500$ pixels was displayed within 3.5 seconds. The spatial resolution of the OCT system was 8 ${\mu}m$ in air.

  • Barley malts were prepared at 15, 18 and $21^{\circ}C$ for $3{\sim}6$ days, and assayed for ${\beta}-glucanase$, ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\beta}-amylase$ activities. ${\beta}-Glucanase$ activity increased markedly during earley germination and reached maximum at the 6th day of germination. ${\beta}-Glucanase$ activity in six-rowed barley malt was much higher than that in two-rowed malt. ${\beta}-Glucanase$ activity was associated with reduction in ${\beta}-glucan$ content during germination. ${\beta}-amylase$ activity was also considerably higher in two-rowed barley, and increased continuously during 6-day germination. ${\beta}-Amylase$ activity was the lowest at $15^{\circ}C$, the highest at $18^{\circ}C$, and intermediate at $21^{\circ}C$ of germination temperature. Considerable amount of ${\beta}-amylase$ was detected in ungerminated raw barley, and this enzymatic activity tended to increase during 6-day germination. Diastatic power, measure of starch-saccharifying enzyme, in six-rowed malt was $1.4{\sim}1.6$ fold higher than in two-rowed malt. Germination at $18^{\circ}C$ for $5{\sim}6$ days was suggested to be the optimum condition for manufacturing good quality malts, in terms of enhanced starch-degrading enzymatic activity.

  • The injection of ozone, produced by dielectric barrier discharge, into the exhaust gas gives rise to a rapid oxidation of NO that is the main component of nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) in most practical exhaust gases. Once NO is converted into $NO_2$, it on readily be reduced to $N_2$ in the next step by a reducing agent such as sodium sulfide and sodium sulfite. The reducing agents used ca also remove $SO_2$ effectively, which makes it possible to treat $NO_x\;and\;SO_2$ simultaneously. The present two-step process made up of an ozonizing chamber and an absorber containing a reducing agent solution was able to remove about 95% of the $NO_x$ and 100% of the $SO_2$, initially contained in the simulated exhaust gas. The formation of $H_2S$ from sodium sulfide was prevented by using a strong basic reagent(NaOH) together with the reducing agent. The removal of $NO_x$\;and\;SO_2$ was more effective for $Na_2S$ than $Na_2SO_3$.

  • Strain A28-5, which can degrade xylan and agar in solid medium, was isolated from a coastal seawater sample collected from Jeju Island, South Korea. This strain was found to be a gram-negative, $Na^+$-requiring bacterial strain with a polar flagellum for motility. Additionally, the strain was tolerant to antibiotics such as ampicillin and thiostrepton. The G+C content of the genome was 43.96% and menaquinone-7 was found to be the predominant quinone. Major fatty acids constituting the cell wall of the strain were $C_{16:1}$ ${\omega}7c/iso-C_{15:0}$ 2-OH (23.32%), $C_{16:0}$ (21.83%), and $C_{18:1}$ ${\omega}7c$ (17.98%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain showed the highest similarity (98.94%) to that of Catenovulum agarivorans YM01, which was demonstrated by constructing a neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree. A28-5 was identified as a novel species of the genus Catenovulum via DNA-DNA hybridization with Catenovulum agarivorans YM01, and thus was named as Catenovulum jejuensis A28-5. The formation of tetramers and hexamers of xylooligosaccharides and (neo)agarooligosaccharides, respectively, were confirmed by thin-layer chromatography analysis using an enzyme reaction solution containing xylan or agarose with two crude enzymes prepared from the liquid culture of the strain.

  • Waste activated sludge from sewage treatment plants mainly consisted of flocs of bacterial cell, and thus hard to be stabilized anaerobically due to rigid cell walls. One of the pretreatment methods to overcome this barrier is the venturi cavitation system (VCS) adopting hydrodynamic cavitation. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of the pretreatment of waste activated sludge by VCS on the anaerobic digestibility. Depending on the pretreatment period with the VCS, methane production, COD removal and VS removal efficiency increased 41%~45%, 36.5%~43.1% and 18.4~24.1%, respectively, compared to the control case. The increase in methane production from digester was 3.3~4.2 times higher than the theoretical methane potential of the increased SCOD after the VCS pre-treatment. This suggests that the VCS pre-treatment not only increases SCOD but also improves the digestibility of solid fractions. The energy mass balance indicated that the energy consumed for sludge pre-treatment could be recovered by the increased methane production after pre-treatment, suggesting the high potential for field application.

  • Based on fundamental properties and machining characteristics of Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), it has well performance on machinability or workability, drying, and fine surface. Additionally, yellow poplar is light weight and has bright color with high performance of bending processing, so it could be used for furniture or artworks materials and wood-based panel materials. Recently, public attention has been focused on indoor air quality, and Ministry of environment drift more tight regulation on indoor air quality for an apartment house and public facility with the times. Construction materials has been assessed emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde according to law (No.10789), so yellow poplar is also needed to assess these emission characteristics. Emission of VOC and aldehyde compounds from dry and green wood condition of yellow poplar were investigated with KS M 1998:2009. Based on results, more than 30 compounds were detected from yellow poplar, and lower NVOC (natural VOC) were emitted than AVOC (Anthropogenic VOC) and OVOC (other VOC). Formaldehyde emission was lower than $5{\mu}g/m^3$ and acetaldehyde, ketone, and propionaldehyde were detected from yellow poplar. From dry yellow poplar, m-Tolualdehyde ($33.6{\mu}g/m^3$) was additionally detected while no detection of propionaldehyde. After drying process, amount of ketone emission increased significantly. The unique smell of yellow poplar may not only come from emission of acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde.

  • According to a research by global IT market research institute IDC, CSIM(Converged Security Information Management) market of Korea was estimated to be 1.7 trillion KRW in 2010, and it has grown approximately 32% every year since. IDC forcasts this size to grow to 12.8 trillion KRW by 2018. Moreover, this case study exemplifies growing importance of CSIM market worldwide. Traditional CSIM solution consists of various security solutions(e.g. firewall, network intrusion detection system, etc.) and devices(e.g. CCTV, Access Control System, etc.). With this traditional solution, the the data collected from these is used to create events, which are then used by the on-site agents to determine and handle the situation. Recent development of IoT industry, however, has come with massive growth of IoT devices, and as these can be used for security command and control, it is expected that the overall amount of event created from these devices will increase as well. While massive amount of events could help determine and handle more situations, this also creates burden of having to process excessive amount of events. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss potential events that can happen in CSIM system and classify them into 3 groups, and present a model that can categorize and process these events effectively to increase overall efficieny of CSIM system.

  • To characterize the polysaccharides which exist as soluble forms in Korean traditional alcoholic beverages, the polysaccharides were isolated from Korean pear wine and their anti-complementary activities were examined. The main polysaccharide, PW-1 was purified to homogeneity from the crude polysaccharide (PW-0) in pear wine by size exclusion chromatography using Sephadex G-75. Molecular mass of PW-1 was estimated to be 150 kDa and it contained significant proportion of mannose (81.8%) and 5 different minor component sugars such as arabinose (1.2%), galactose (2.7%), glucose (8.5%), galacturonic acid (5.3%) and glucuronic acid (0.5%). These analyses indicated that the main polysaccharide in pear wine was mainly present as a mannan which had originated from the cell walls of fermenting yeasts. On the other hand, PW-1 showed potent anti-complementary activity in a dose-dependent fashion. Identification of C3 activation products by the crossed immunoelectrophoresis using anti-human C3 and anti-complementary activity of PW-1 in $Ca^{++}$-free condition suggested complement activations by PW-1 from Korean pear wine occur via both classical and alternative pathways.
