The golden apple snail-Pomacea canaliculata was an alien species and introduced into Korea as table use in 1983. This species is possible pest in direct seeded rice paddy in Korea. We investigated the effects of this exotic snail on the macrophytes and the water quality in water canal. Also, the basic life cycle of this species and the overwintering ecology in Chungnam and Jeonbuk province were elucidated. A survey of natural water canal in Korea showed that high densities of the snail were associated with absences of macrophytes-Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna perpusilla. Experiments in water tank also demonstrated that the golden apple snail can cause the loss of macrophytes, and increase the EC(Electric conductivity), COD(Chemical oxygen demand), T-N(Total nitrogen) and T-P(Total phosphorus) in water.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the conventional pesticide application system on the rice spider community based on the quantitative investigation of arthropod community in the rice fields in Saran area, Hwasung-si, Kyeonggi-do from 1996 to 1998. Spiders were the highest dominant group comprising over 90% of all natural enemies in their density, and showed very stable yearly occurrence. In these fiekds the mean density of spiders was about 10 individuals/$0.25m^2$ during the rice growing season, and three families including Lycosidae, Tetragnathidae and Linyphiidae were very abundant. The colonization of spiders occurred in early season and they showed rapid density increase in mid-season. They maintained the highest density to the late season and their density decreased at harvest season. In the years of the low rice pest occurrence, the disturbance effect on spider community by pesticides were less. Two dominant species, Pirata subpiraticus and Pachygnatha clerki, had different population dynamics; Pirata subpiraticus showed the rapid density increase in the mid-July, and most of them remained immature stages, however, in the case of Pachygnaths clerki population, they rapidly increased in the late August and most of them remained adult stage during the late growing season.
This study was carried out to investigate the biological performance of the brownplanthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, reared on rice plants at different growth stages; maximum tillering, booting, heading with and without panicles, and milking. The results obtained are as follows: The rice plants at the maximum tillering stage gave the best in the longevity, oviposition period, and the total number of oviposited eggs for the macropterous females, and the worst with the booting stage. For the brachypterous females, however, the best results were obtained from the rice of which their panicles had removed after heading. There was no significant difference in the hachability of eggs and the developmental period of the nymphs in the next generation, but the nymphal mortality was the highest with the milking stage and the lowest with the maximum tillering and heading stage without panicles. The longest life span was shown in males derived on the maximum tillering stage, and the shortest for milking(macropterous type) or booting (brachypterous type) stages. Coefficientes of variances in longevity and number of eggs for the adults emerged from heading stage without panicles were lower than those with panicles intact, and such trend was more obvious in brachypterous adults, especially for the females. The biological performances of the BPH have close relationship with the translocated organic material at the feeding site which showed considerable difference with the growth stages of the rice.
Extracts of 43 species of plants were tested for their insecticidal and acaricidal activities against six species of insect pests and one mite species. The methanol extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves selectively was found to have potent insecticidal activity against Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), whereas steam distillate of Thujopsis dolabarata var. hondai sawdust showed potent insecticidal activities with a broad spectrum. The methanol extract of Pinus densiflora leaves and steam distillate of T. dolabrata var. hondai sawdust exhibited potent activities against Tetranychus urticae (Koch).
The small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (Fall$\acute{e}$n) (SBPH) is one of the important rice pests in Korea, which transmits rice stripe virus (RSV) to rice. This pest is an indigenous species in Korea and has also known to migrate from China to the western coastal areas of Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the wing morphs of SBPH and its parasitism rate of Haplogonatopus atratus Esaki et Hashimoto in Korea. In 2014, SBPH were collected in April and July from 16 sites throughout South Korea and their wing morphs and parasitism rates were measured under the microscope. Percentage of brachypterous male in July was significantly declined compared to that in April, while that of brachypterous female did not change. A positive relationship was found between latitude and percentage of brachypterous adults in April. Parasitism rate of both nymphs and adults were higher in April than July. In addition, nymphal parasitism rate was generally higher in western coastal areas.
ALA (5-aminolevulinic acid) has been proposed as a tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicide and insecticide by the action of the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (Protox IX). The present study was conducted to determine growth responses of plant and insects to ALA, biodegradable biopesticidal substance. In the paddy condition experiment, plant height and shoot fresh weight of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was more reduced by ALA than rice plants, even though both plant species show great phytotoxicity. Hairy crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), a monocot weed, was more sensitive to ALA at 5mM under upland condition when ALA applied on the foliage, compared with soybean (Glycine max) as a dicot crop. ALA solutions were tested for their insecticidal and larvicidal activities against Spodaptera exigua (Hubner) and Tetranychus urticae Koch. by foliar application and leaf-dipping method. The result showed higher insecticidal activity of ALA at 10mM and its mixture with insecticide luferon against S. exigua. Strongest insecticidal activity against T. urticae was observed from the ALA solution at 10mM 72 days after application. This results show that ALA solution had potent herbicidal and insecticidal activities against agricultural pests even though their activities were lower than those of synthetic pesticides.
The migratory locust Locusta migratoria, one of the world's most notorious insect pests, has polyphenic (gregarious or solitarious) characteristics. Although this species is known to have several morphological variants, it is genetically divided into two different lineages using mitochondrial genome analysis: Southern (Africa, Southern Europe, Southern Asia, and Australia) and Northern (East Asia and the Eurasian continent). In 2014, a large number of orange black-colored gregarious L. migratoria nymphs suddenly appeared at Haenamgun, Jeollanamdo in the south of Korea. This is the first report of gregarious phase locusts occurring in Korea. In this study, mitochondrial COI sequences of one nymph and 11 adults of L. migratoria were analyzed to examine the genetic lineage of the gregarious nymphs of L. migratoria. Our results showed that all 12 individuals belong to the Northern linage and have low intraspecific genetic divergences (0.0% - 0.9%).

Korean Paldal variety rice, harvested November and hulled into polished and unpolished forms in April, 1969, packed in the straw bags and the kraft paper bags. Being irradiated with 10, 30 and 50 krad ${\gamma}-ray$, the samples were stored at room temperature for testing infestation, uric acid content, fat acidity, riboflavin content and panel test. The results are as follows. 1. The kraft bag lot with polished rice or unpolished rice manifested the apparent disinfestation with $30{\sim}50$ krad irradiation. On the other hand, in the straw bag lot the irradiation effects on disinfestation were weakened through summer on account of the second contamination. 2. The changes of uric acid content in rice were proportional to the state of infestation. 3. Fat acidity, which has a close relation with the rancidity of fat in rice, increased during storage and showed some increasing tendency in the irradiated lot with $30{\sim}50$ krad. 4. In comparison with the control lot, riboflavin content was not affected by 50 krad irradiation. 5. With 10, 30 and 50 krad dose, the irradiated lot should have no significant difference in taste, odour, color and viscosity for the panel test.
The object of this study is to clarify the varietal resistance to green leaf-and planthoppers and to evaluate the nature of the resistance to the insects in connection with the antibiosis. This study investigated the reaction of the 46 rice varieties to insects including recommended varieties of Korea. At seedling stage they were infested with second or third instar nymphs. The results were as follows. 1. The body weight of brown planthopper was increased more than 3 times on susceptible rice variety Mankyung at 15 days after infestation but only 2 times on resistant mudgo. 2. The mortaliy of the brown planthopper was significantly different between resistant and susceptible rice plant, showing 74 percents in resistant Mudgo while 31.2 percents in susceptible Mankyung at 15 days after caging. 3. Most of the rice varieties tested showed highly susceptible reaction to brown planthopper except Mudgo, KR 108-243-1 and HR 529-41-3-2 as resistant varieties, and Akamochi, Satominori, IR 24 and IR 8 as moderately susceptible ones. 4. In the test of varietal resistance to white-backed planthhopper, Mudgo, KR 108-243-1, KR 109-154-2 and HR 529-45-2 and HR 529-45-3-2 were resistant, and Suweon #82, Tongil, IR 8, Palkeum, Iri #309, Hokwang and Chukoku #31 were moderatly susceptible. 5. Most of the varieties tested were observed as highly resistant to green rice leafhopper, but Tongil, Suweon 82, IR 24, Milsung and Chukoku #31 were moderatly susceptible. 6. The new bred lines HR 108-243-1 are multi-resistant to brown planthopper, green rice leafhopper and White-backed planthopper, and some others showed moderate susceptibility.
During a last decade, the introduced traits in commercialized GM crops have been diversified from a simple trait such as herbicide resistance gene or insectresistance gene which are related to the crop production into more complicated traits such as modification of fatty acid or essential amino acid composition, modified coloring pattern of flower. In addition, it was investigated that several other GM crops bearing more refined traits expected to lead next generation are also awaiting for risk assessment (RA) or under field test for the preparation of RA in the near future. These GM crops include abiotic stress resistance including drought or cold, increased biomass, production of bioethanol or diesel, production of pharmaceuticals or functional materials for industrial. In particular, in 2008 and 2009, it was reported that the highest number of GM crops for molecular farming are under developed in laboratory or green house level in all the world. Likewise, in Korea, 171 events from 49 plant species are under developed to introduce several important traits. At present, about 10 events are under field test to select elite lines for RA application. For the first time, herbicide resistance turfgrass developed by Korean research team has been submitted for RA and currently under requested for additional data. Moreover, GM rice resistant to leaf roll (folder) disease is expected as a next event to be submitted for RA application.
