  • "Wonkwang" is a new sprout-soybean cultivar developed from the cross between Danyeobkong and MS91001 at the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI) and National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, in 2007. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials to evaluate the performance of Iksan 56 were carried out from 2003 to 2007. This cultivar has a determinate growth habit, purple flower, grayish brown pubescence, yellow seed coat, Grayish brown hilum, lanceolate leaflet shape and small seed size (10.9 g/100 seeds). The maturity date of "Wonkwang" is three days later than the check variety, "Pungsan". It has a good seed quality for soybean-sprout and resistance to lodging. The soybean-sprouts grown from "Wonkwang" have high isoflavone ($3,481{\mu}g/g$)contents. This cultivar has resistance to soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and necrotic symptom (SMV-N) and other most troublesome soybean diseases which are bacterial pustule and black root rot. The grain yield of "Wonkwang"in the regional yield trials (RYT) for 3 consecutive years was averaged 3.05 ton per hectare, which was 8% higher than that of the check cultivar "Pungsan".

  • The time of panicle initiation change by transplanting date, and this change is affected by heading ecotype and seedling age. So we assessed the variations of panicle initiation, spikelet differentiation and heading date affected by transplanting dates, rice cultivars and seedling ages. And we compared the growth durations and meterological factors between chief growth stages. The differences of growth duration from transplanting date to spikelet differentiation by seedling age were 1~3 days in all transplanting of Unkwang, but it increased to 4 days in Hwayeong transplanting on May 1 and June 30, and Nampyeong transplanting on June 30. The growth durations from panicle initiation to heading of Unkwang and Hwayeong increased until transplanting time by May 31, and decreased thereafter. The growth durations of Nampyeong increased in transplanting on May 16 and May 31. In each transplanting, mean temperature of 30 days after heading was highest in early transplanting, but sunshine hours in the period were highest in transplanting on June 30 in Unkwang, in transplanting on June 15 in Hwayeong, and higher in transplanting on May 31 and June 15 in Nampyeong. The growth duration between spikelet differentiation and heading showed variation according to rice cultivars and transplanting date, Those were 22~26 days in Unkwang, 21~27 days in Hwayeong and 21~28 days in Nampyeong.

  • Five rice cultivars were treated by four dose of butachlor at transplanting seedling stage. Visual injury rate by butachlor was lowest in Zhy-Lian-Ai-dun-Nam and highest in Samseungbyeo, but reduction of yield was higher in Zhy-Lian-Ai-Yun-Nam and Hangangchalbyeo than in Samseungbyeo and Cheungcheungbyeo. Reduction of panicle number by butachlor was most effective factor to yield reduction.

  • The densities of plant-and leaf hoppers were examined by direct counting the rice plant of two varieties; Milyang 23 and Chucheongbyeo, in Chinju. The densities of the small brown planthopper(SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, and Green rice leafhopper(GLH), Nephotettix cincticeps were higher on Chuchungbyeo than on Milyang 23 throughout the season, whereas those of white backed planthopper(WBPH), Sogatella furcifera, and Brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens were high on Milyang 23. Seasonal densities of planthoppers were varied with rice plant growth; on Chucheong field, GLH was the predominant species from June to August and BPH was in September, but in Milyang 23 field, WBPH was more abundent from July to August and BPH was increased from late August and was the highest on September.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of main rice varieties and control efficacy of HPPD inhibitor to major paddy weeds at the time of temperature rise due to climate change. Phytotoxicity of herbicide to rice was increased as temperature was increased, and more severe in root than shoot. The phytotoxicity of japonica rice cultivars for the rice were mild enough to recover. However, glutinous rice, super high yield rice, and Tongil rice varieties were damaged enough to decrease the yield. Shindongjinbyeo transplanted by June 15, showed phytotoxicity enough to recover. However, in the rice field on June 30 and on July 15, the rice showed a remarkable inhibition. The control effect of Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides was more than 90% under the temperature condition controlled artificially. However, Echinochloa oryzicola was controlled 40% at $27.5^{\circ}C$, which is a high temperature condition. In rice fields with different transplanting times, annual weeds except for E. oryzicola were highly controlled by 90% or more regardless of the time of transplanting.

  • Rice plant extracts of brown planthopper (BPH) resistant rice varieties, Jangseongbyeo (JSB) and Hwacheongbyeo (HCB) at different growth stages (seedling, tillering, heading and ripening) were sequentially fractioned using hexane, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, butanol, and distilled water. The extracts were applied to BPH susceptible rice variety, Dongjjnbyeo (DJB), to investigate the insecticidal and repellent effects against BPH. BPH insecticidal effects were not clearly observed with almost all of the extract fractions obtained from both JSB and HCB varieties for 12 h, whereas the ethyl ether and hexane extract fractions showed about 10 to 30% of BPH mortality in 24 to 48 h of application periods. An effective BPH repellent activity was found with the applications of ethyl ether extract fractions obtained from JSB variety. The extract fractions obtained from HCB variety did not show any different repellence among the various fractions. The BPH repellent effects of the extract fractions obtained at different growth stages of either JSB or HCB varieties did not show any correlations. The effect of ethyl ether fraction on BPH repellent was continually increased by 30 h after treatment and thereafter decreased. In addition, the first sub-fraction separated by a flash column chromatography eluted with chloroform:methanol (9:1, v/v) from the BPH effective ethyl ether faction in JSB variety might be meaningful to repel BPH from BPH susceptible target rice plants. The results indicated that the ethyl ether fraction obtained from JSB was higher in repellent activity than in insecticidal activity, and suggesting that there might be specific substance(s) in the first sub-fraction (sF1) of the ethyl ether fraction in JSB that could provide repellent activity against BPH.

  • This study was carried out to determined the optimum seeding rate and number of seedling stands per unit area for high yield with two varieties of rice, Nakdongbyeo (Japonica type) and Samgangbyeo (Indica x Japonica type), in direct water-seeded rice culture at Crop Experiment Station. Seeds coated with $CaO_2$ after germination were sowed at May 4 in 7 levels, such as 1.6, 1.8, 2.1, 2.7, 3.5, 4.0, 4.3kg /10a, and the number of seedling stands per square meter was adjusted to be 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 plants, respectively. The maximum number of tillers increased as the seeding rates increased, but the ratio of effective tillers decreased. The critical dates of effective tillering of tested varieties were delayed by the lower seeding rates, and the date was June 18 at the plot of seeding rate with 3.5kg /10a. The number of panicles per unit area increased in accordance with the increased seeding rates. The number of spikelets per panicle in Nakdongbyeo was not affected by the seeding rates, but in Samgangbyeo it decreased as the seeding rate increased. The optimum number of seedling stand per square meter appeared to be 78 in Nakdongbyeo and 120 in Samgangbyeo, respectively. It meant that the optimum seeding rates for Nakdongbyeo and Samgangbyeo were about 2.7 and 4.0kg /10a, respectively.
