A study on the optimization of manufacturing processes of double wall bellows for dual fuel engine I - Design optimization by buckling and stress analysis - (Dual Fuel 엔진용 이중관 벨로우즈 제작 공정의 최적화에 관한 연구 I - 좌굴해석 및 응력해석을 통한 설계 최적화 -)

  • Dual fuel engines are suitable for stricter regulations as they significantly decrease exhaust gas output. Hence, research and development of double wall bellows for dual fuel engines is important. In this study, optimum forming methods and welding conditions were derived to develop double wall bellows made of austenite stainless steel. The reliability of the prototypes was ensured by various performance evaluations. In this study, the buckling load and bellows stress were obtained by structural design, buckling, and stress analysis to design optimum bellows. As a result, the buckling load in the embossing shape of bellows increased by approximately 1.6 times, and no buckling and squirming occurred at 30.0 bar, which was twice that of the maximum design pressure.

  • Static tests and low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted to analyze the characteristics of the bellows for LNG vessels according to the forming methods. The cycle life of bellows was tested based on the specified cyclic life, 80000 cycles, to analyze the difference in characteristics between pre-and post-test data by measuring the strain and stress of each convolution of formed bellows. The low-cycle fatigue test was conducted using a strain gauge that was attached to the convolution of bellows. Formed bellows were placed on the structural test device which was equipped with a hydraulic system and was capable of moving in the x-y direction. Data was measured and processed by a multi recorder. Through the static test and low-cycle fatigue tests results, the difference between the cycle life of bellows formed by mechanical methods and of those formed by hydraulic methods was investigated. Moreover, the cause of difference in cyclic life according to forming methods was performed.

  • Because of their high flexibility and durability, multilayer bellows are manufactured for use in commercial vehicles, while single-layer bellows are manufactured for use in passenger vehicles. A study based on the finite element method (FEM) and shape optimization for the single-layer bellows has been actively performed; however, until now, a study based on the FEM has rarely been performed for the multilayer bellows with gaps between the layers. This paper presents a finite-element modeling scheme for the multilayer bellows to improve simulation reliability during the evaluation of stress and flexibility. For performing shape optimization for the multilayer bellows, DOE (design of experiment) and the Kriging metamodel followed by the D-optimal method are used.

  • 최근 옥외 변전소 형식으로 많이 채택되고 있는 Gas Insulated Switchgear(GIS) 변전설비는 라인 구조물 형태로서, 온도응력에 대한 길이방향의 변형을 수용토록 하기 위하여 GIS 곳곳에 벨로우즈가 설치되어 있다. 특히, GIS는 강재 지지대로 높은 위치에 설치되어 지진 시 지반보다 높은 가속도를 받기 때문에 벨로우즈의 설치 위치가 GIS에 영향을 줄 가능성이 크다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 다양한 경우의 민감도 해석을 통하여 벨로우즈의 위치가 GIS의 내진성능에 미치는 영향을 분석하였으며, 그 결과 최적의 벨로우즈 위치조건을 도출하였다.

  • In development of liquid-propellant rocket engine, engine gimbaling requires various types of bellows movements and cryogenic insulation is applied with movement-based design and material on each axial and circular bellows. Cryogenic insulation of Bellows for high pressure line and recirculation line are necessary to maintain cryogenic temperature for engien efficiency and protect from heat transfer and radiation of high temperature components during engine gimbaling.

  • 최근 발생한 경주 및 포항 지진으로 인해 다수의 매립배관 손상이 보고되었다. 벨로우즈 신축관이음은 기하학적 특성으로 인해 진동 및 침하 등으로 인한 손상을 저감시킬 수 있다. 벨로우즈 신축관이음관의 내진 성능평가에 대한 실험적 혹은 해석적 연구는 미미한 상황이다. 본 연구는 벨로우즈 신축이음관의 내진성능을 분석하기 위해 반복하중 기반의 실험적 연구를 수행하였다. 또한 실험결과를 기반으로 3차원 유한요소 모델을 구축하였으며 실험과 해석에서 얻어진 하중-변위 관계를 비교하였다. 해석 모델에서 전체적인 강성이 큰 것으로 나타났으며 최대 변위가 작용할 때 에너지 소산량은 약 10% 가량 큰 것으로 나타났다.

  • A bellows is an important temperature control component in a Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler. It is designed using a very thin shell, and the inside of the bellows is filled with nitrogen gas. The bellows is made of a nickel-cobalt alloy that maintains its strength and elastic properties in a wide range of temperatures from cryogenic to $300^{\circ}C$. The pressure of the gas and the volume within the bellows vary according to the temperature of the gas. As a result, the bellows contracts or expands in the axial direction like a spring. To explore this phenomenon, the deformation of the bellows and its internal volume must be calculated iteratively under a modified pressure until the state equation of the gas is satisfied at a given temperature. In this paper, the modified Benedict-Webb-Rubin state equation is adopted to describe the temperature-volume-pressure relations of the gas. Experiments were performed to validate the proposed method. The results of a numerical analysis and the experiments showed good agreement.

  • The exhaust system is one of the major sources of vibrations, along with the suspension system and engine. When the exhaust system is connected directly to the engine, it transfers vibrations to the vehicle body through the body mounts. Therefore, in order to reduce the vibrations transmitted from the exhaust system, the vibration characteristics of the exhaust system should be predicted. Thus, the dynamic characteristics of the bellows, which form a key component of the exhaust system, must be modeled accurately. However, it is difficult to model the bellows because of the complicated geometry. Though the equivalent beam modeling technique has been applied in the design stage, it is not sufficiently accurate in the case of the bellows which have complicated geometries. In this paper, we present an improved technique for modeling the bellows in a vehicle. The accuracy of the modeling method is verified by comparison with the experimental results.

  • Dual bell nozzle is a type of altitude compensation nozzle, which is a nozzle that minimize the losses of the specific impulse at the off-design point of a typical bell nozzle. In this paper, numerical computations are performed to understand the transition characteristics of dual bell nozzles with fixed expansion ratios. The major design variables are the length of extension and the angle of inflection. As the length of the extension increased, the transition altitude and transition duration increased and the reduction of the thrust coefficient decreased. As the angle of inflection increased, the transition altitude and transition duration decreased and the reduction of the thrust coefficient increased.

  • Exchanging sheets for patients is one of the worst and one of the factors that makes the nursing environment difficult. Many beds with various functions for the patient have already been developed, but there is no device for automatically changing the sheets. In this study, we developed and tested the first automatic sheet changer for a medical bed and verified its performance. The developed automatic seat changer uses a torque limiter to properly adjust tension and exchange a dirty sheet and a new seat at the same time. The designed automatic sheet changer was experimentally confirmed to be properly operated and installed in a integrated multi-functional bed with bed sores prevention and automatic patient transfer functions.
