  • The purpose of this study is to conduct an empirical analysis on the effect of aid proliferation on government spending on health by the recipient nations using panel data and acquire information on the direction of future ODA operations. In this study, calculated excessive foreign aid index with regard to the health sector of Sub-Sahara African nations and conducted an empirical analysis on the effect of aid fragmentation on government spending on health sector. The result of the analysis disclosed that aid fragmentation significantly reduced government spending on health. It is anticipated that such trend came from the mutual pursuit of profit between the attribute (the needs of the donor nation) of ODA projects after new businesses and the governments of recipient nations that want ODA funding. Because competitive and excessive supports in ODA projects induce distortion in the government budget operation of the recipient nations and thereby trigger disutility in ODA projects, Based on the result of the analysis, We proposed to incorporate a more comprehensive deliberation with regard to the capacity of the recipient nations as well as a need for the role of mediating body such as DAC.

  • This study estimated vegetation environment and agricultural activity during the late Holocene inferred from pollen analysis of peat on floodplain of Wangpo-cheon around Neungsan-ri, Buyeo-gun, South Korea. By result of pollen analysis of 28 horizons from Trench NS 1 and NS 4, vegetation environment during 2,300 to 1,700 yr BP was divided into Pollen Zone I (Quercus-Alnus), Pollen Zone II (Quercus-Alnus-Gramineae) and Pollen Zone III (Pinus-NAP-Gramineae). The pollen analysis suggests that agricultural activity in the Buyeo area was widely spread from the early time of the Pre-Iron Age to the late Samhan Age and buckwheat field seem to be built to substitute paddy field during the early time of the Pre-Iron Age.

  • The drainage area of the Miho stream is composed of granitic basins, gneissic and sedimentary mountains. 80 percent of the Miho stream flows through the Jincheon basin and the Cheongju inner-plain within the Daebo granite belt. Because the deep weathering of granitic hills provides a large amount of sands to the streams, there are wide floodplains with thick alluvium developed in the basin and plain. The thickness of the alluvium is 5~10m and the width of the floodplains is 2~2.5km. In the basin outlet area where a stream passes through the mountain canyon, wide floodplains and deep alluvium are developed in other riverside. The Miho stream is a sand-gravel channel flowing through the Cheongju inner-plain with wide floodplains and deep alluvium formed by deep weathering of granite.

  • Two Cretaceous(80-90 Ma) non-marine sedimentary basins, Namyang and Tando Basins, are distributed in the Namyang area, Hwaseonggun and in the Tando area, Ansanshi, Kyungki Province, Korea. The Namyang and Tando Basins are composed of 10 facies, which are pooped into 5 facies associations(FA). FA I consists of massive conglomerate facies, normally graded conglomerate facies and reversely graded conglomerate facies, which is interpreted to have been formed by laminated sandstone facies, massive conglomerate facies(channelized), which is thought to have been formed by sheet flow, stream flow and suspension sedimentation in an alluvial/braided plain environment. FA III consists of massive mudstone(pebbly) facies, laminated mudstone facies, massive sandstone facies and is interbedded by channel-fill conglomerate. It is interpreted to have been deposited by suspension settling during flooding and channel-fill deposition in a floodplain environment. FA IV consists of massive conglomerate facies, normally graded conglomerate facies, massive sandstone facies, normally graded sandstone facies, and laminated sandstone facies and is interbedded with mudstone facies. It is thought to have been deposited by debris flow and turbidity current in a fan-delta environment. FA V consists of massive mudstone facies, laminated mudstone facies, laminated sandstone facies and is interbedded by massive conglomerate bed. It is thought to have been formed by suspension sedimentation and low-density turbidity current in a lake. In the Namyang Basin FA I is distributed in the eastern and southern margin of the basin, FA II in the middle part of the basin as north-south tending band. and FA III in the western part. In the Tando Basin FA II is distributed in the middle part of eastern margin and in the northwestern margin, FA IV in the southwestern part, and FA V in the central part. Correlation of the facies associations shows that FA I and II in the Namyang Basin are distributed in the lower to middle part of stratigraphic sequence and FA III in the upper part of the sequence whereas FA II and IV in the Tando Basin are in the lower to middle part and FA V in the upper part of the sequence. These patterns of facies associations distribution suggest that the Namyang Basin was developed as an alluvial fan and alluvial/braided plain at first and then evolved into a floodplain whereas the Tando Basin was developed as a fan-delta and alluvial/braided plain at first and then evolved into a lake environment.

  • The Quaternary coarse-grained sandy sediments are distributed along the channels of Seomjin River. The fluvial sediments were sedimentologically studied in horizontal and vertical distributions. To analyze depositional environments and facies changes in the sediments, sediment sampling from river mouth to upper stream and desctriptive approaches to the sediment profiles outcropped near Kurye were carried out. The sediments along the stream lines of the river are assigned to very coarse to coarse sand in grain size. The sediment grains are widely scattered in sorting and moderately sorted in average. For skewness and kurtosis, the sediments ranges from very fine to very coarse skewed and from very lepto-kurtic to extremelyl epto-kurtic states, respectively. The sediments are divided into slightly gravelly sand, gravelly sand and sandy gravel in sediment type. The pain shape in the sandy sediments are dominant in equant and tabular forms showing wide varieties. The sandy sediments are mostly poorly sorted and are highly variable in surface texture with SEM. Some smaller grains in the sediments ordinarily show polished surfaces. Of those grains, quartz ones are commonly angular to surounded. On the basis of facies changes and sedimentary structures, outcropped fluvial sediment profiles in Kurye are classified into xGyS, mGyS, gGyS, xSM, xS, mS, mGyM, IgM in facies. These eight facies are reformed as facies assemblage I and ll. The facies assemblage I and II are interpreted as the products of the channel deposits in braided stream and flood plain ones besides channels, respectively. The change facies assemblage I with facies assemblage ll imply that depositional environments hadbeen migrated from braied sream to flood plain ones.

  • The Cretaceous Duwon Formation was studied on the basis of sedimentologic analysis in order to unravel geologic conditions for the development of the streamflow-dominated alluvial fan under arid to semi-arid climatic conditions. The Duwon Formation unconformably overlies the Paleoproterozoic gneiss (basement). Based on the sedimentologic analysis, the Duwon Formation is interpreted to have been deposited in gravelly braided stream (FA-1) near the basement, laterally transitional to sandy braided stream (FA-2) and floodplain environments (FA-3) with distance (< 7 km) from the basement. Lateral changes in sedimentary facies and the well development of calcrete nodules in FA-3, together with radial paleocurrent directions measured in FA-1, are suggestive of the deposition of the Duwon Formation in streamflow-dominated alluvial fan under arid to semi-arid climatic conditions. Recent analysis of detrital zircon chronology suggests that sediments of the Duwon Formation were derived from the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, including the western part of Yeongnam Massif and the southwestern part of Okcheon Belt. This implies the alluvial fan where the Duwon Formation accumulated had the large drainage basin. Because the large drainage basin can supply the significant amounts of water and temporarily store the sediments within the basin, watery floodwater carried sediments to the alluvial fan rather than the debris flows. Furthermore, the drainage basin largely composed of coarse-grained metamorphic and igneous rocks produced sand-grade sediments, preventing evolution of floodwater into debris flows. We suggest that combined effects of the large drainage basin and its coarse-grained metamorphic and igneous rocks provided favorable conditions for the development of streamflow-dominated alluvial fan, despite arid to semi-arid climatic conditions during sedimentation.
