  • Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary paleostress was evaluated by analyzing the healed microcracks in the Cretaceous granite of the Goheung area, south Korea. Healed microcracks in five granite samples (GH-1, GH-3, GH-4, GH-5, GH-8) were investigated and measured according to direction. The directions of maximum horizontal principal stress in GH-1, GH-3, and GH-4 are dominantly $N60^{\circ}W\;and\;N70^{\circ}E,\;N20^{\circ}W\;and\;N50^{\circ}W$, while minor directions are N-S and $N30^{\circ}E$. In GH-5 and GH-8, $N40^{\circ}E\;and\;N10^{\circ}E$ are the most dominant directions, while $N40^{\circ}W$ is the minor direction. Thus overall, the most dominant directions of healed microcracks in the study area are oriented $N60^{\circ}W$, while minor directions are oriented $N20^{\circ}W,\;N20^{\circ}E\;and\;N70^{\circ}E$, essentially NE. Combining the paleostress results of this study with other studies, the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress in the study area during the late Cretaceous to the early Tertiary should perhaps be changed WNW to NE. The reason for this is thought to be the complex tectonic movements which occurred in northeast Asia at that time.

  • We report an Early Cretaceous zircon U-Pb age ($113.9{\pm}1.2Ma$) for the Heuksan-do granite located about 90km from Mokpo offcoast of the southwestern Korean peninsula. At this Aptian/Albian boundary, widespread igneous activities occurred not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the eastern China and Japan. We raise the possibility that the flat-slab subduction and delamination triggered such an episodic igneous activity over the large areas of East Asia.

  • To get the various data on geological information, distributional ratios and characteristics of constituent rocks with geologic ages and rock types were obtained by ArcGIS 10.1 program, digital geologic and geomorphic maps of 1:250,000 scale in Jeonnam and Gwangju areas. In the Jeonnam area, geologic ages can be largely divided into 7, in which their distribution ratios show decreasing trends in the order of Cretaceous, Precambrian, Jurassic, Quaternary, Age-unknown, Carbonifeorus-Triassic and Triassic, and the former fours make the most prevailing ratios of 94.80%. Rock types in the area can be assorted into 57 ones, in which major 7 ones occupy the dominant ratio of 71.68%. Among them, Kav (acidic volcanics+rhyolite and rhyolitic tuff) show much more distribution ratios than the others. It shows more aspects distributed in north, west, middle, east and south parts, especially in Sinan-Mogpo-Yeongam of west and Haenam of south parts in the area, respectively. On the other hand, geological ages in Gwangju area can be largely divided into 5, in which their distribution ratios show decreasing trends in the order of Jurassic, Quaternary, Cretaceous, Precambrian and Age-unknown, and the former fours occupy almost the whole ratio of 98.95%. Rock types in the area are 12 ones, in which major four ones make up the dominant value of 91.30%. Among them, Jurassic granites of the most dominant value are mostly occupied in the southwest-northeast part of the area. Next dominative Quaternary alluvium is mostly developed along the Yeongsan river, the Hwangryong river and their channel junction. And Yongdu and Donggye plains are well developed around the Yeongsan riverline, and channel junction of the Yeongsan and Hwangryong rivers in the area, respectively.

  • The Mesozoic activity on the Korean Peninsula is mainly represented by the Triassic post-collisional, Jurassic orogenic, and Cretaceous post-orogenic igneous activities. The diversity of mineralization by each geological period came from various geothermal systems derived from the geochemical characteristics of magma with different emplacement depth. The Cretaceous metallic mineralization has been carried out over a wide range of time periods from ca. 115 to 45 Ma (main stage; ca. 100 to 60 Ma) related to post-orogenic igneous activity, and spatial distribution patterns of most metal deposits are concentrated along small granitic stocks. The late Cretaceous metal deposits in the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs are generally distributed along the boundary among the Gongju-Eumseong fault system and the Yeongdong-Gwangju fault system and the Gyeongsang Basin, most of them are in the form of a distal epithermal~mesothermal Au-Ag vein or a transitional mesothermal Zn-Pb-Cu vein. On the other hand, diverse metal commodities in the Taebaeg Basin, the Okcheon metamorphic belt and the Gyeongsang Basin are produced from various deposit types such as skarn, carbonate-replacement, vein, porphyry, breccia pipe, and Carlin type. In the late Cretaceous metallic mineralization, various mineral deposits and commodities were induced not only by the pathway of the hydrothermal solution, but also by the diversity of precipitation environment in the proximity difference of the granitic rocks. The diversity of these types of Cretaceous deposits is fundamentally dependent on the geochemical characteristics such as degree of differentiation and oxidation state of related igneous rocks, and ore-forming fluids generally exhibit the evolutionary characteristics of intermediate- to low-sulfur hydrothermal fluids.

  • Uranium concentration in groundwater of the Goesan area was anticipated high because the area contains Ogcheon metamorphic rock zone which partly includes coal bed bearing high uranium content and nearly half of the area is covered by granitic rocks. Groundwater samples collected from 250 wells in five 5 lithology (Ogcheon meta-sandy rock zone (Og1), Ogcheon lower phyllite zone (Og2), Ogcheon pebble bearing phyllite zone (Og3), Jurassic granite (Jgr), Cretaceous granite (Kgr)), of the area were analyzed and equivalent uranium concentrations (e(U)) from 200 rocks near sampled wells were measured using portable gamma spectrometry. Higher median value of e(U) (8.2 mg/kg) was found on Kgr outcrops. The median e(U) value of Og2 was not as high as that of Kgr and similar to those of Jgr, Og1, and Og3 (3.05~3.90 mg/kg). The uranium level in groundwater of the area ranged from 0.01 to $293.0{\mu}g/L$ with a median value of $0.87{\mu}g/L$ which is similar to the national median uranium level of $0.74{\mu}g/L$. The uranium concentration was high in the samples from the Kgr (median $4.74{\mu}g/L$) and low samples from the Og1, Og2, and Og3 (median $0.35{\sim}0.74{\mu}g/L$). The percentage of total samples having uranium level above $30{\mu}g/L$ was 2.8%, on the other hand, that of Kgr is 20.7%, reflecting additional survey on the Kgr area is needed.

  • Cretaceous sedimentary-volcanoclastic formations of the Kyeongsang Supergroup were intruded by granitic rocks in the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. In the Euiseong and Shinryeong area, these intrusives have various compositions including gabbro, diorite, biotite granite and feldspar porphyry. Associated volcanic rocks consist of two chemically distinct types: the bimodal suite of basalt and rhyolite in the Keumseongsan caldera, and the felsic suite of andesite and rhyolite in the Sunamsan-Hwasan calderas. Most rocks are subalkaline, and follow a typical differentiation path of the calc-alkaline magma. The granitic rocks can be distinguished chemically from the volcanics by high Zr/Y ratios. Differences in Zr/Y and K/Y ratios between the two volcanic suites can be accounted for by mantle source and fractionation. Chondrite-normalized trace element abundances of granitic rocks are depleted in Th and K, whereas those of the Keumseongsan rhyolites are depleted in Sr and Ti. Rb, La and Ce is enriched in rhyolites of the Sunamsan-Hwasan calderas. $Rb-SiO_2$ and Rb-Y+Nb discrimination diagrams suggest that the intrusives and volcanics have a volcanic arc setting. K-Ar ages indicate four plutonic episodes : diorite (89 Ma), granite (66~62 Ma), granite and porphyry (55~52 Ma) and gabbro (52~45 Ma), and two volcanisms : bimodal basaltic and rhyolitic volcanism (71~66 Ma) in the Keumseongsan caldera, and felsic andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism (61~54 Ma) in the Sunamsan-Hwasan calderas. Geochemical and age data thus suggest that the igneous rocks are related to several geologic episodes during the late Cretaceous to early Tertiary.

  • Cretaceous intrusive and extrusive rocks are widely distributed in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, possibly the result of intensive magmatism which occurred in response to subduction of the western proto-Pacific plate beneath the north-eastern part of the Eurasian plate. Geochemical and petrological study on the Cretaceous granitic rocks were carried out in order to constrain the petrogenesis of the granitic magma and to establish the paleotectonic environment of the area. Whole rock chemical data of the granitic rocks from the study area indicate that the all the rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the subalkaline field. The overall geochemical features show systematic variations in each granitic body, but the source materials of each granitic body are thought to have been different in their chemical composition. Higher values of $Fe_2O_3/FeO$ of the granitic rocks in the western area suggest that the granitoids had been solidified under highly oxidizing environment. The granitic bodies in the eastern area also show higher contents of Li, Ni, Co, Sr, Cr, Sc and lower Rb and Nb compared to the those of the western area. Chondrite normalized REE patterns show generally enriched LREE and strong negative Eu anomalies in the western wet while slight to flat Eu anomalies in the east-ern area. The REE and $(La/Lu)_{CN}$ of the granites are $60{\~}499ppm$ and $8.9{\~}66$ correspond to the range of the continental margin granite. On the ANK vs. ACNK and tectonic discrimination diagrams, parental magma type of the granites corresponds to I-type, VAG and syn-collision granite. Interpretations of the chemical characteristics of the granitic rocks favor their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime at continental margin during the subduction of proto-Pacific plate.

  • Cretaceous volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments are abundantly distributed in the Haenam area located at the tip of the southwestern part of the Yongdong-Kwangju depression zone. The Cretaceous strata correlated with the Yuchon Group of the Kyongsang Supergroup are divided into three formations: Hwawon Formation, Uhangri Formation and Haenam Formation in ascending order. The stratovolcanic Hwawon Formation is mainly composed of andesite and andesitic pyroclastics. The Uhangri Formation is the lacustrine sedimentary deposit. The Haenam Formation is composed of Hwangsan tuff, Haenam tuff, Yongdang tuff, Seoho tuff, and also Acidic lava, both being formed by a cogenetic acidic volcanism. The topographic circular structure of the Cretaceous strata was controlled by the doming of Jurassic Sani granite. Cretaceous volcanism in the study area is characterized by the two stages of intermediate volcanic activity in Cenomanian to Albian, and acidic volcanic activity in Campanian to Coniacian.
