  • This study investigated the mate selection preferences of single female teachers by investigating the desired traits in socioeconomic, physical attractions, psychological traits and family roles of their prospected marital partner, in order to explore the current trends in homogamous marriage. A questionnaire was distributed to 295 unmarried female teachers selected by convenience sampling from the various cities. The teachers pursued homogeneity in age, educational attainment, religion, and occupation while they preferred partners with higher income level. In terms of physical assets, the attraction that the teachers felt towards the partner was the most important physical appearances. The respondents preferred partners who are masculine and an androgynous partner. The teachers held high expectations towards their future spouses in that they desired to share the roles of emotional, financial support, child care and kin keeping. A partner who shared modern sex role attitudes was preferred over someone who held traditional one. The pursuit for overall homogeneity reflects that the teachers seek for equality in their relationships with prospected marital partners by exchanging similar characteristic.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish a structural equation model on social roles and health for married working mothers. to determine the effects of social roles on Korean women's health and to explore the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between social roles qualities and health. Method Data were collected from 323 employed women with partner and children. lived in Seoul and near Seoul. Response rate was 62.3%. The instruments for measurements were Role Quality Scale developed by Park et al. (1999). Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. and 31 items from SF-36 developed by Ware & Sherboune(l992). Results: The effect of marital role quality on self-esteem and the effect of parental role quality on health were not significant. Modification model fitted with the collected data very well. as evidenced by the small chi-square(0.58), the very high goodness-of-fit(GFI = 1.00), and adjusted goodness-of-fit (AGFI = 0.99), and very small root mean square residual(RMSR=0.0072), and the slope of Q-plot is over 1. 41% of the variance in self-esteem and 21% of the variance in health were accounted for by these variables. Conclusion: Further research concerned with the mediating effects of self-esteem in the role and health relationship should be covered the issue of various role combinations. And it is necessary to examine the influence of subfactor of quality of social roles on health.

  • Adult child caregivers and spousal caregivers might deal with differential challenges. Studies about caregivers' psychological outcomes, however, tended to investigate associations between caregiving and its outcomes by pooling adult child caregivers and spousal caregivers together. By using a U. S. sample of family caregivers who assisted a relative with dementia, this study examined whether the relationship of caregivers to care receivers (daughter caregivers or spousal caregivers) made a difference in levels of depressive symptoms. The result showed that wife caregivers were more likely to be depressed than daughter caregivers. For daughter caregivers, role overload, role captivity, and behavior problems significantly influenced on depression. Besides these variables, the level of education was a significant predictor for wife caregivers. Role captivity and behavior problems significantly impacted on depression for husband caregivers. Thus, role captivity and behavioral problems were common predictors for all the caregivers. Specifically, higher levels of role captivity and behavioral problems were likely to make caregivers more depressed. The implication of these results were discussed.

  • Prior studies about nursing home placement identified factors contributing to the risk of institutionalization by pooling adult child caregivers and spousal caregivers together, regardless of differential challenges for the two types of caregivers. In a sample of 456 caregivers followed for a 2 year period, an event history analysis showed that relationship made difference in time to placement and that differential factors led to institutionalization for spousal caregivers and daughter caregivers. Spousal caregivers are more likely to place dementia patients into nursing homes sooner than adult child caregivers. The age of care recipients and role captivity (refers to being unwilling, involuntary incumbent of a caregiver role) are predictors of placement for both groups of caregivers. Dementia patients who were older had a greater risk of institutionalization. Greater feelings of role captivity also shortened the time to placement. Income and education are significant predictors only for caregiving daughters. Daughters who had a high education level are more likely to delay nursing home placement whereas those who had a higher income are more likely to institutionalize their demented parents sooner. Use of day care and behavioral problems are significant predictors only for spousal caregivers. Specifically, use of day care and behavioral problems precipitates nursing home placement. The findings of this study suggest that interventions for helping family members to provide care to the demented elderly at home must consider different circumstances faced by caregiving spouses and caregiving daughters.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of rearing involvement by fathers and their wives' supports on father parenting satisfaction. The subjects of this study were 290 fathers with children aged between 3 to 5. All fathers completed the Parent Satisfaction Scale(Duke, Rose, & Halverson ,1997), Generative Fathering Inventory(Lee, Lee & Cho, 1999) and Spousal Supports for Work and Parenting(Greenberger, Goldberg & Hamill, 1990). The data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, independent samples t-test and hierarchical multiple regression. The major results of this study showed that rearing involvement by fathers, responsibility towards their child rearing, and parenting supports from their spouse were significant variables in predicting a father’s parenting satisfaction.

The study method involved a survey answered by married males in Seoul, Gyung-gi, Incheon and a total of 188 copies were used for the final analysis. The data analyses used SPSS 12.0 which employs basic statistics, reliability tests, and binary logistic regression. The results were as follows: First, It turns out that couples who don't have many children and when the wife is not that old, particularly have high parental role satisfaction. And when they acknowledge the policy on childbirth encouragement, they tend to choose the 'Both Husband and Wife want to give birth' category.
