  • A study on the undrained behavior of isotropically consolidated clay-sand mixtures was carried out using the automated triaxial testing apparatus. Overconsolidated ratio, effective mean pressure and clay content( up to 20% bentonite) were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. Undrained behavior(strength and pore water pressure generation during shear in triaxial loading) depends upon overconsolidation ratio, confining pressure and clay content. Significant changes in undrained compression characteristics occurred at around 20% of clay contents in the sand. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for clay-sand mixtures. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.

  • Recently, a new seismic probe, called "MudFork", has been developed and can be utilized for accurate and easy measurements of shear wave velocities of cohesive soils. To expand its use to estimate undrained shear strength and density, a preliminary investigation to correlate these properties with shear wave velocity was attempted. Cone penetration tests and a seismic test, using MudFork, were performed at a silty soil site near Incheon, Korea. Also, undisturbed samples were obtained using thin-wall tube samplers, and the shear wave velocities and undrained shear strengths of the samples were measured in the laboratory. A simple linear relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity was obtained, and a tentative relationship between density and shear wave velocity was also defined.

  • In this paper, isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression test device installed with bender elements is used to measure stress, stain, and shear wave velocity, from which the characteristics of shear strength and Poisson'ratio are investigated. The results show that there is a unique relationship between maximum shear modulus determined from shear wave velocity and effective vertical stress at failure, which is defined as the sum of vertical and radial stresses at failure. The correlation is very useful since it is possible to predict the shear strength and internal friction angle from shear wave velocity. In addition, Poisson's ratio is determined from measured axial and volumetric strains. It is demonstrated that the range of measured Poisson's ratio is between 0.15 and 0.6, and increases with the axial strain. The ratios at axial strains smaller than 0.2% corresponds to the range recommended in design codes, which are approximately from 0.3~0.35. However, at axial strains exceeding 1%, the measured ratios are between 0.5 and 0.6. It is therefore shown that use of ratios commonly used in practice will result in pronounced underestimation at large strains.

  • This paper verifies the accuracy and efficiency of the implicit stress integration algorithm for an anisotropic hardening constitutive model developed in a companion paper[Oh & Lee (1996)3. Simulation of undrained triaxial test results shows the accuracy of the method through an error estimation, and analyses of accuracy and convergence were performed for a numerical excavation problem. As a result, the stress was accurately integrated by the algorithm and the nonlinear solution was converged to be asymptotically quadratic. Furthermore nonlinear FE analysis of a real excavation problem was by performed considering the initial soil conditions and the in-situ construction sequences. The displacements of wall induced by excavation were more accurately estimated by the anisotropic hardening model than by the Cam-clay model.

  • The influence of stress path on the deformation characteristics of clay has been studied through a series of stress-path controlled triaxial tests on artificially sedimented and normally con- solidated Kaolinite. It has been found that there exists a critical stress increment ratio, Kc, in which stress·strain characteristics possesses a linear relationships and beyond Kc, strain hardening. A modified hyperbolic constitutive model for the strain hardening behavior has been formulated based on the Drnevich's hyperbolic function. And, a method of settlement analyses has been Proposed wherein the effect of stress path during consolidation is taken into account.

  • When enforced earth is used for the retain wall and four walls, the most important thing would be how to maximize the land utilization. Accordingly, in case of enforced earth, we pile up the minimal height of earth$(20\sim30cm)$ and harden the earth using a static dynamic hardening machine. In this paper, we tried to analyze and. compare the stress transformation characteristics of reinforced weathered granite soil. with geosynthetics when repetitive load is added to the enforced earth structure and when static load is added. The purposes of the study are as follows; 1) To compare and analyze non reinforced weathered granite soil and reinforced weathered granite. soil by executing a unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests. 2) To identify the strength characteristics of weathered granite soil reinforced with geotextile due to the repetitive dynamic loads through comparison of the stress due to the static load and the repetitive dynamic loads.

  • This paper presents shear characteristics of a ground improved by sand piles. The sand piles have different length and diameter depending on the depth of a clayey layer. A series of CU triaxial compression tests are carried out on specimens covered with/without soft material which is similar to geotextile. The results show that the shear strength and stress ration increase as the length and the diameter of the sand pile increase. In addition, covering the specimen with the soft material appears to affect those characteristics as well. The increase of cohesion seems to be more remarkable compared to internal frictional angle.

  • Considering the effects of confining pressure, initial shear stress, cyclic stress ratio and number of loading cycles, cyclic triaxial tests are carried out to clarify the soil dynamic properties such as shear modulus and value of material damping of clay under undrained cyclic loading conditions. The results show that no obvious dependency on initial shear stress and effective confining stress are recognized in the shear modulus and damping ratio plotted versus strain. However, the shear modulus decreases and the damping ratio increases with increasing axial strain. When compared with others, it is also revealed that the shear moduli are distributed within the range curves obtained using empirical equations derived by Marcuson et al. (3) and Kokusho et al. (4), and damping ratios are distributed between the curves obtained by Kokusho et al. (4) and Ishihara et al. (9).

  • In this research, artificially cemented sand which is made of a few portland cement and Nak-Dong river sand was researched closely. For providing the fundamental data which is needed in design and analysis of levee material, the shear behavior of cemented sands was investigated by drained triaxial test, and analyzed in accordance with the increase of cement content. The peak strength and elasitc modulus increased and dilation of cemented sand was restricted by the cementation, but after breakage of the cementation, dilation increased, cohesion intercetpt and friction angle increased with the increase of cement content and strain softening behavior appeared in stress-strain curve.

  • We perform a series of experimental tests to evaluate whether the shear strength of clean sands can be reliably predicted from shear wave velocity. Isotropic drained triaxial tests on clean sands reconstituted at different relative densities are performed to measure the shear strength and bender elements are used to measure the shear wave velocity. Laboratory tests reveal that a correlation between shear wave velocity, void ratio, and confining pressure can be made. The correlation can be used to determine the void ratio from measured shear wave velocity, from which the shear strength is predicted. We also show that a unique relationship exists between maximum shear modulus and effective axial stress at failure. The accuracy of the equation can be enhanced by including the normalized confining pressure in the equation. Comparisons between measured and predicted effective friction angle demonstrate that the proposed equation can accurately predict the internal friction angle of granular soils, accounting for the effect of the relative density, from shear wave velocity.
