The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption have been investigated using an eight-cylinder, four cycle, direct injection diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. The experiments in this study are conducted on the fixed fuel injection timing of $38^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. In conclusion, it is found that $NO_{x}$ emission is markedly reduced with the drop of burnt gas temperature at high speeds and loads especially as the EGR rate increases, while the soot particulate rises with EGR rate and load at a given engine speed, especially high loads. The reduction of exhaust emissions within the Korea heavy duty diesel engine emission standards can be roughly achieved by the optimal EGR rate without degarding the specific fuel consumption, based on the correlations between exhaust emissions.

Recently, LPG has been considered as more environmental friendly fuel than liquid fuels for vehicles. However because LPLi engine has the strong point that not only increases the volumetric efficiency and cold startability, but also decreases unburned hydrocarbon exhaust emission in warm-up condition, much attention has moved to development of the Liquid Phase LPG injection (LPLi) system from the mixer type LPG engine. To reduce exhaust NOx, this study investigated the effect of EGR with LPLi engine and determined optimized EGR feeding position and distribution. In addition, engine stability, performance, and exhaust emission level were evaluated.
Flue gas recirculation(FGR) is an effective combustion technique for reducing nitrogen oxides(NOx) and is applied in various fields of low-pollution combustion. Continuing the previous study, a numerical analysis was conducted to identify changes of flame characteristics and NOx formation mechanism with applying FGR technique in CH4/air premixed counterflow flames. NOx emitted was divided into four main reaction paths(thermal NO, prompt NO, N2H and N2O), showing relatively the production rate of NO with the recirculation ratio. As a result, thermal NO contributed greatly to the overall NO whereas the effect of N2H was minimal. In addition, emission index of NO was compared as the recirculation ratio increased by modifying the UC San Diego mechanism to examine the contribution of thermal NO.
One of the methods for low-pollution combustion, flue gas recirculation(FGR) is effective to reduce nitrogen oxides and it was applied in CH4/air premixed counterflow flames to identify the change of flame characteristics and NOx mechanisms. Considering that the mole fraction of the products varied depending on the strain rates, the major products: CO2, H2O, O2 and N2 were recirculated as a diluent to reflect the actual combustion system. With the application of the FGR technique, a turning point of maximum flame temperature under certain strain rate condition was found. Furthermore as the recirculation ratio increased, the tendency of NO was changed before and after the turning point and the analysis on thermal NO and Fenimore NO production was conducted.
In this study confirmed the reduction effect of pollutant by applying Fi-EGR and FPI-EGR to hybrid combustion system realizing premixed flame and non-premxied flame at once. The results showed that NOx emission index decreased significantly in case of adopting EGR. Additionally, the hybrid combustion system with EGR resulted in a better performance compared to usual non-premixed combustion system such that it can reduce $NO_x$ emission at equivalent EGR ratios. Especially, in the case of 25% of FI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 50 : 50, NOx emission index reduction rate was about 59% compared to $NO_x$ emission of non-premixed combustion system without EGR and in the case of 15% of FPI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 70 : 30, $NO_x$ emission index reduction rate was about 48% compared to $NO_x$ emission of hybrid combustion system without EGR.

To meet the requirements of the Tier 4 interim regulations for off-road vehicles, emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) must be reduced by 95% and 30%, respectively, compared to current regulations. In this research, both the DPF and HPL EGR systems were investigated, with the aim of decreasing the PM and NOx emissions of a 56-kW off-road vehicle. The results of the experiments show that the DOC-DPF system is very useful for reducing PM emissions. It is also found that the back pressure is acceptable, and the rate of power loss is less than 5%. By applying the HPL EGR system to the diesel engine, the NOx emissions under low- and middle-load conditions are reduced effectively because of the high differential pressure between the turbocharger inlet and the intake manifold. The NOx emissions can be decreased by increasing the EGR rate, but total hydrocarbon (THC) emission increases because of the increased fuel consumption needed to compensate for the power loss caused by EGR and DPF.
Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion is one of dual-fuel combustion systems which can be constructed by early diesel injection during the compression stroke to improve premixing between diesel and air. As a result, RCCI combustion promises low nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke emissions comparing to those of general dual-fuel combustion. For this combustion system, to meet the intensified emission regulations without emission after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is necessary to reduce combustion temperature with lean premixed mixture condition. However, since EGR is supplied from the front of turbocharger system, intake pressure and the amount of fresh air supplementation are decreased as increasing EGR rate. For this reason, the effect of various EGR rates on the brake power and thermal efficiency of natural gas/diesel RCCI combustion under two different operating conditions in a 6 L compression ignition engine. Varying EGR rate would influence on the combustion characteristic and boosting condition simultaneously. For the 1,200/29 kW and 1,800 rpm/(lower than) 90 kW conditions, NOx and smoke emissions were controlled lower than the emission regulation of 'Tier-4 final' and the maximum in-cylinder pressure was 160 bar for the indurance of engine system. The results showed that under 1,200 rpm/29 kW condition, there were no changes in brake power and thermal efficiency. On the other hand, under 1,800 rpm condition, brake power and thermal efficieny were decreased from 90 to 65 kW and from 37 to 33 % respectively, because of deceasing intake pressure (from 2.3 to 1.8 bar). Therefore, it is better to supply EGR from the rear of compressor, i.e. low pressure EGR (LP-EGR) system, comparing to high pressure EGR (HP-EGR) for the improvement of RCCI power and thermal efficiency.

One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.
Due to the oxygen contents in biodiesel, application of the fuel to compression ignition engines has significant advantages in terms of lowering PM formation in the combustion chamber. In recent days, considerable studies have been performed to extend the low temperature combustion regime in diesel engines by applying biodiesel fuel. In this work, low temperature combustion characteristics of biodiesel blends in dilution controlled regime were investigated at a fixed engine operating condition in a single cylinder diesel engine, and the comparisons of engine performances and emission characteristics between biodiesel and conventional diesel fuel were carried out. Results show that low temperature combustion can be achieved at $O_2$ concentration of around 7~8% for both biodiesel and diesel fuels. Especially, by use of biodiesel, noticeable reduction (maximum 50% of smoke was observed at low and middle loads compared to conventional diesel fuel. In addition, THC(total hydrocarbon) and CO(Carbon monoxide) emissions decreased by substantial amounts for biodiesel fuel. Results also indicate that even though about 10% loss of engine power as well as 14% increase of fuel consumption rate was observed due to lower LHV(lower heating value) of biodiesel, thermal efficiencies for biodiesel fuel were slightly elevated because of power recovery phenomenon.

The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a reliable oxygen-enriched combustion techniques especially for the case of the flue gas recycling in order to reduce the $CO_2$ emissions from practical industrial boilers. To this end a systematic numerical investigation has been performed, as a first step, for the resolution of the combusting flame characteristics of lab-scale LNG combustor. One of the important parameters considered in this study is the level of flue gas recycling calculated in oxygen enriched environment. As a summary of flame characteristics, for the condition of 100% pure $O_2$ as oxidizer without any flue gas recycling, the flame appears as long and thin laminar-like shape with relatively high flame temperature. The feature of high peak of flame temperature is explained by the absence of dilution and heat loss effects due to the presence of $N_2$ inert gas. The same reasoning is also applicable to the laminarized thin flame one, which is attributed to the decrease of the turbulent mixing. These results are physically acceptable and consistent and further generally in good agreement with experimental results appeared in open literature. As the level of $CO_2$ recycling increases in the mixture of $O_2/CO_2$, the peak flame temperature moves near the burner region due to the enhanced turbulent mixing by the increased amount of flow rate of oxidizer stream. However, as might be expected, the flue gas temperature decreases due to presence of $CO_2$ gas together with the inherent feature of large specific heat of this gas. If the recycling ratio more than 80%, gas temperatures drop so significantly that a steady combustion flame can no longer sustain within the furnace. However, combustion in the condition of 30% $O_2/70% $$CO_2$ can produce similar gas temperature profiles to those of conventional combustion in air oxidizer. An indepth analyses have been made for the change of flame characteristics in the aspect of turbulent intensity and heat balance.
