Environmental and Ecological Characteristics of Pulsatilla tongkangensis Habitats (동강할미꽃 자생지의 환경 및 생태적 특성)

  • This is a study intended to investigate the environmental factors including vegetation and soil in order to better understand the environmental and ecological characteristics of four different habitats of Pulsatilla tongkangensis(Mt. Baekun, Maha-ri, Kyulam-ri and Mt. Deokhang). These habitats, according to investigations, are mostly located on the slopes of mountains facing northwest at an altitude of 220m to 772m above sea level with angles of inclination ranging from 41 degree to 85 degree. A total of 27 vascular plant taxa are identified in ten quadrates of the four habitats. The importance value of these plants is as follows: Pulsatilla tongkangensis is 9.65%; Carex humilis var. nana 28.93%; Potentilla dickinsii 16.55%; Mukdenia rossii 7.09%; Peucedanum terebinthaceum and Eragrostis ferruginea 4.55%; and Vicia venosa var. albiflora 3.90%. The importance value of these six species is high, so they are at affinity with P. tongkangensis m their habitats. The degree of their average species diversity is 0.75, and that of dominance and evenness 0.24 and 0.85, respectively. Their average field capacity of soil is 19.05%, organic matter 10.51%, and soil pH is 7.43, which are similar among their habitats.

Initial Responses of Understory Vegetation to 15% Aggregated Retention Harvest in Mature Oak (Quercus mongolica) Forest in Gyungsangbukdo (경상북도 신갈나무 성숙림에서 15% 군상잔존벌 이후 초기 하층식생 변화)

  • This study observed changes of understory vegetation to evaluate the role of forest aggregate after 15% aggregated retention harvest in mature oak forest (> 100 years) in Gyungsangbukdo Bonghwagun in 2010 and 2011. Spontaneous responses of understory vegetation cover (%), species richness, abundance of plant growth forms (herbaceous and woody plants), and overall attributes (by Ordination analysis) were estimated in aggregate area (0.15 and n=36) and clear cut area (0.85 and n=192) in experimental site and control site (1 and n=300). Based on ordination analysis, overall change of species composition in aggregated sites were relatively lower than in harvest area. Right after treatment, total cover of cutted area slightly decreased from 15.6% to 14.7%, and species richness increased from 14 species to 22 species. Cover and richness in the both of aggregate and control sites increased. In plant growth forms, 15% aggregate harvest revealed positive effects on the abundance (cover and richness) of herbaceous plants than woody group. After retention treatment, overall, edge effect likely played major component of vegetation changes in aggregate forest and in harvested area, mechanical damage from harvest operation and change of forest structure by clear cutting were critical. As pre-treatment data, which are rare in ecological studies in Korea, were critical for interpretation between patterns that may have arisen from spatial distributions in the original forest, our experimental design have higher opportunity for long term monitoring on the effect of forest aggregate and vegetation regeneration in clear cutted area.

Development of the Pinus densiflora Community Planting Model in the Central Cool Temperate Zone of Korea (한국 온대중부지역 소나무림 군락식재모델 개발 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to suggest a Pinus densiflora community planting model in the central cool temperate zone of Korea and nearby areas. For the purpose of this study, we surveyed various DBH classes of the P. densiflora community in Dangjin-gun, Choongchungnam-do. We surveyed the size of entire individuals in the 92 plots as well as surveyed the location of individuals in each tree layer and sub-tree layer(1/100 scale) of 44 plots using a quadrant method from young to old communities. As a result of analysis, the tree layer was growing well but the basal areas of the subtree layer were less than 10% compared with the tree-layer. This indicates the subtree layer is not in general growing well in the P. densiflora community. There were no significant patterns in the shrub layer. A P. densiflora community planting would consist of a tree layer and a shrub layer and the finding of growth patterns of the tree layer is significant. In order to make a model of the shrub layer, an additionally survey of another shrub layer is needed in a nearby planting area. Both regression models, 1) between tree layer DBHs and individuals per unit area, and 2) between individuals per unit area and shortest distances of individuals, can yield much information through study.

Forest Structure of the Region from Dongchanggyo to Deogjusa in Woraksan National Park, Korea (월악산국립공원 덕주사-동창교 지역의 산림군집구조)

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of the region from Dongchanggyo to Deogjusa in Woraksan National Park, 23 plots$(400m^2)$ set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups Quercus mongolica-pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus molica community, Mixed Broad-leaved community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica, pinus densiflora, Quercus serrata and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai were found as a major woody plant species in Woraksan National Park region. In this area, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora were dominated partially. In the future, the importance percentage of Pinus densiflora might be decreased, but those of Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai might be increased. High positive correlations were proved between Acer pic tum and Corylus heterophylla, Betula schimidtii; Acer pseudosieboldianum, Cornus controversa ; Stephanandra incisa and Symplocos sawafutagi, Lespedeza maximowixzii ; Symplocos sawafutagi and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai, Lespedeza maximowixzii; Fraxinus rhynchophyllai and Acer pseudosieboldianum, Lespedeza maximowixzii; Quercus variabilis and Fraxinus sieboldiana; Corylus heterophylla, and Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Acer pseudo sieboldianum and Lespedeza maximowixzii, and relatively high negative corrlations was proved between Quercus serrata and Betula schimidtii; Quercus mongolica and Quercus serrata; Corylus heterophylla and Lindera erythrocarpa. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups were ranged from $1.2393\~1.3674$ and it was relatively high compared to those of the ridge area of other national parks.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridge from Miwangjae to Cheonwhangbong, 11 plots($2000m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups of Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica-Styrax japonica community, Q. mongolica-Pinus densiflora community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica was a major woody plant species in the ridge area from Miwangjae to Cheonwhangbong, and Styrax japonica and Pinus densiflora was partly occupied. High positive correlations was proved between Prunus sargentii and Euonymus alatus for. ciliato-dentatus; Quercus serrata and Euonymus alatus; Sorbus alnifolia and Euonymus alatus, Magnolia sieboldii; Acer pseudo-sieboldianum and Euonymus alatus for. ciliato-dentatus; Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Euonymus alatus for. ciliato-dentatandus; Euonymus alatus and Lindera obtusiloba, Castanea crenata, Lindera erythrocarpa; Lespedeza bicolor and Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Castanea crenata and Magnolia sieboldii; Magnolia sieboldii and Lindera erythrocarpa, and relatively high negative correlations was proved between Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Euonymus alatus; Lespedeza bicolor and Castanea crenata; Stephanandra incisa and Magnolia sieboldii; Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense and Lindera erythrocarpa; Euonymus alatus for. ciliato-dentatus and Magnolia sieboldii; Fraxinus sieboldiana and Sapium japonicum; Prunus sargentii and Lespedeza maximowiczii; Lespedeza maximowiczii and Lindera erythrocarpa. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups was ranged $2.3225{\sim}2.7721$, and it was relatively low value compared to that of mountain ridge area of other national parks.

High positive correlations was proved between Quercus variabilis and Pinus rigida; Styrax japonica and Quercus dentata, Quercus acutissima; Pinus rigida and Lindera erythrocarpa, Pinus densiflora; Lindera obtusiloba and Rhododendron mucronulatum; Albizzia julibrissin and Styrax obassia, and relatively high negative correlations was proved between Diospyros kaki and Quercus dentata; Platycarya strobilacea and Lindera erythrocarpa; Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa and Quercus acutissima; Styrax japonica and Styrax obassia; Pinus rigida and Lindera obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Rhododendron mucronulatum; Quercus mongolica and Albizzia julibrissin. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups was ranged $1.2430{\sim}1.2892$.

Habitats Environmental Characteristics of Polypodium vulgare L. in Ulleung-do (울릉도 미역고사리(Polypodium vulgare L.) 자생지의 입지환경특성)

  • The habitats characteristics of Polypodium vulgare L. in Ulleung-do were investigated to compile basic data for conservation and restoration. Natural habitats were located at altitudes of 410~748m with inclinations of $12{\sim}80^{\circ}$. Sixty six vascular plants were identified from 10 quadrats in 4 habitats. Dominant species among the woody plants, based on importance value, were Acer pictum subsp. mono(49.52%) in the tree (T1) layer, Sorbus amurensis(28.99%) in the subtree (T2) and Schizophragma hydrangeoides(51.99%), Ligustrum foliosum(8.82%), Fagus engleriana(7.25%) in the shrub (S) layer. Importance value for members of the herb (H) layer were as follows: Polypodium vulgare 23.23%; Maianthemum dilatatum 9.65%; Phryma leptostachya var. asiatica 9.23%; Dryopteris crassirhizoma 8.40%; Carex shimidzensis 6.75% and Dystaenia takesimana 5.42%. The importance value of the last five species were high, so they were at affinity with Polypodium vulgare in their habitats. Species diversity was 1.18, and dominance and evenness were found to be 0.11 and 0.84, respectively. The soil types were sandy loam. Average field capacity was 30.42%, and the organic matter and pH were 17.95%, and 4.70. Correlation coefficients based on environmental factors, vegetation and soil analysis were showed that positive correlations between species diversity and species richness, whereas between species diversity and dominance, coverage of Polypodium vulgare and species richness were showed negative correlations.

The Community Structure of Forest Vegetation in Mt. Gaya, Chungcheongnam-Do Province (충청남도 가야산 산림식생의 군집구조)

  • This study was carried out to classify forest vegetation structure of Mt. Gaya from April to October in 2006 using phytosociological analysis methodology of Z-M schools. One hundred study sites(quadrat) were surveyed in the area. The forest vegetation was classified into 3 community groups such as Pinus densiflora community group, Cornus controversa community group and artificial forest group. P, densiflora community group was subdivided into 4 communities such as Rhododendron schlippenbachii community. Salix gracilistyla community, Meliosma oldhamii community and P. densiflora typical community. R. schlippendbachii community was subdivided into Potentilla dickinsii group(subdivided into Carpinus coreana subgroup and Melandrynum firmum subgroup) and R. schlippenbachiitypical group. Cornus controversa community group was also subdivided into 4 communities such as Hovenia dulcis community, Quercus aliena community, Ribes maximowicianum community and C. controversa typical community. Artificial forest type indicated 3 communities such as Larix leptolepis community, Pinus rigida community and Castanea crenata community. Accordingly, the vegetation pattern of the surveyed areas were classified into 3 community groups, 11 communities, 2 groups, and 2 subgroups and the forest vegetation was classified into 13 units in total. It is also believed that C. coreana subgroup and M. oldhamii community could be a source for a significant basic data for making vegetation hierarchy and forest distribution zone in the Korean peninsula. H. dulcis community was also considered to be one of the important genetic resources; therefore, those distribution areas are required to be institutionally protected and managed in the near future.

Phytosociological Community Classification of Mountain Ridge from Guryongryeong to Mt. Yaksu in the Baekdudaegan, Korea (백두대간의 구룡령에서 약수산 마루금의 식생구조 특성에 관한 연구)

Three groups of Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum community, Q. mongolica community, Cornus controversa-Q. mongolica community were classified by cluster analysis. Q. mongolica was a major woody plant species in the ridge area from Guryongryeong to Yaksusan and Carpinus cordata and C. controversa was partly occupied in some area. High positive correlations showed between Q. mongolica and Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa, Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Tilia amurensis and Tilia mandshurica, Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa; Tilia mandshurica and S. chinensis for. pilosa, R. schlippenbachii; Betula costata and Acer mono; Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa and Rhododendron schlippenbachii, and relatively high negative correlations showed between A. pseudosieboldianum and S. chinensis for. pilosa, R. schlippenbachii. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups were ranged 0.8170~1.1446 and it was lower compared to those of the ridge area of the national parks in Baekdudaegan.

Characteristics of Vegetation Structure on the Ridge of the Naknam-Jeongmaek (낙남정맥 마루금 일대의 식생구조 특성)

  • To figure out the vegetation situation in the ridge of the Naknam-Jeongmaek, six intensive survey sites were selected considering environmental factors and human interferences, 132 quadrats (area $100m^2$) were installed to survey appearing species of trees and major environmental factors, and the characteristics of vegetation structures were analyzed. The surveyed plots were divided into six groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN; Quercus mongolica-Q. variabilis community, Pinus densiflora-Q. dentata community, Chamaecyparis obtusa community, Q. mongolica-P. densiflora community, P. densiflora-P. thunbergii community, P. koraiensis community, Rhododendron spp.-Lespedeza cyrtobotrya community. P. densiflora-Q. dentata community, Q. mongolica-P. densiflora community, and P. densiflora-P. thunbergii community are expected to be succeeded by deciduous oaks because the power of deciduous oaks is strong in their lower layer. C. obtusa community, P. densiflora community, and Rhododendron spp.-L.cyrtobotrya community are artificial forests that were artificially formed and are expected to be maintained in the current state for some time because the dominance value of planted species of trees is high. Most vegetations in Naknam-Jeongmaek were secondary forests or artificial forests formed for forest tree production and forestation for erosion control. In particular the top regions and hilly sections of the mountain were mostly dominated by deciduous oaks such as Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis showed some P. densiflora community competing with deciduous oaks. On the other hand, low sections and regions adjacent to the city showed severe artificial interference since exotic species such as P. thunbergiil, C. obtusa, P. koraiensis, and Rhododendron spp. were planted.
