Gentamicin sulfate (GS)-loaded poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV) devices were prepared for controlled-release of antibiotics. In this study, the effects of thickness, hydroxyvalerate (HV) content, initial drug-loading ratio, and additive content on the release profile have been investigated. The morphology of devices was examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM) before and after in vitro release; their highly porous surface and cross-sectional were observed. It could be suggested that device would be affected by the packing of the HV and additive content, which would depend on their structure. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect and quantify the release of GS from the device. The drug release from all the devices showed biphasic release patterns, and some matrices released the incorporated antibiotic throughout 30 days with a near zero-order release rate. The release patterns were shown to be changed by altering the thickness, copolymer ratio, and additive content.
Field emission behavior from vitreous carbon powders deposited on Mo coated glass by electro-phoretic method was investigated. Although the vitreous carbon has only $sp^2$ hybridized carbon bond, we could observe an excellent field emission behavior. Reproducible electron emission was observed without initiation process which is known to be needed in most carbon cathode materials. Critical electric field for electron emission was in the range from 3 to 4 MV/m. The effective work function was estimated to be about 0.06 eV, as obtained from the slope of Fowler-Nordheim plot. The stability of the emission behavior characterized by repeated I-V measurements, was much superior to the Si tips. We observed the possibility of full area light emission in vitreous carbon materials. This results showed that the field emission is not intimately related to the $sp^3$ hybridization of carbon, but the electrical properties of cathod/electrode interface or the conductivity of the cathode materials which required for the electron transport to the cathode surface.
Deposition conditions of diamond thin films were optimized using hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD). Boron-doped diamond thin films with varying boron densities were then fabricated using B4C solid pellets. Current-voltage responses and field emission currents were measured to test the characteristics of field emission display (FED). With the increase of boron doping, the crystal size of diamond decreased slightly, but its quality was not changed significantly in case of small doping. The I-V characterization was performed for Al/diamond/p-Si, and the current of doped diamond film was increased $10^4\sim10^5$ times as compared with that of undoped film. In the field emission properties, the electrons were emitted with low electric field with the increase of doping, while the emission current increased. The onset-field of electron emission was 15.5 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 2 pellets, 13.6 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 3 pellets and 11.1 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 4 pellets. With the incorporation of boron, the slope of Fowler-Nordheim graph was decreased, revealing that the electron emission behavior was improved with the decrease of the effective barrier energy.
This study developed the health monitoring method of press process using the acoustic emission (AE) sensor and high-pass filter. Also, the AE parameters such as ring-down count and peak amplitude are used. Based on this AE signal, the AE parameters were acquired and was utilized to detect the crack of the specimen. Since the defect detection is difficult due to noise and low magnitude of signal, the signal noise and press operation frequency were checked through the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) and damped. High-pass Filtering data was applied to AE parameters to select effective parameters. By using this signal processing techniques, the proposed AE parameters could improve the performance of defect detection in the press process.
Oral drug delivery system using pectin gel was developed for colon-targeting of peptide drug. BSA(bovine serum albumin)-loaded pectin and pectin-alginate beads were prepared for drug release properties in vitro. Morphological studies by electron microscopy indicated that pectin and pectin-alginate beads were spherical in shape and approximately 1.0 mm. In order to find the suitable beads, effects of cross-linking agents (calcium chloride or zinc acetate) and drying temperature of beads were investigated. Drug release decreased with concentration of cross-linking agents and drying temperature. For colonic drug delivery from pectin and pectin-alginate beads, pectin degradable enzymes were added at 5 hrs from the beginning of drug release. After addition of enzymes, drug release was suddenly increased against free enzymes. Therefore, pectin and pectin-alginate beads can be promised as useful drug release carriers for colon-targeted delivery.

The Ministry of Environment simultaneously revised testing methods and emission standards of adhesives product on the "Law of indoor air quality management" for the effective management of the building materials releasing pollutants in great quantities. Accordingly, it is impossible to compare original standards with revised standards directly. The influences of each factor of the revised testing methods of adhesive product on the emission rate of pollutants are reviewed through comparing with the original testing method. Through this study, revised pollutant emission control standards were assessed. With the result that it is found that emission rate of adhesives product is weakened two and half times by changing test period and the emission rate resulting from changing drying time has little difference. As a result of comparing TVOC emission standards with the original testing method considering the modification of testing methods, it is found that the emission standard through this revision is strengthened about 2.1 times more than that of present testing method.
Unsaturated poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (UPHA) was biosynthesized and the properties of drug delivery using the polymer matrix were investigated. The biosynthesis of UPHA was carried out by pH-stat fed batch fermentation of Pseudomonas oleovorans (ATCC 29347) grown solely with 10-undecenoic acid as a carbon source. The physical and chemical properties of the biosynethesized UPHA were characterized using NMR, FT-IR, GPC and DSC. The drug release experiments were carried out using HPLC with a diffusion cell fur the release amount of ketoprofen as model drug. The effects of crosslinking degree, patch thickness, and enhancer on the drug release were studied. The drug release rate was linearly decreased and consistent with increased crosslinking degree of the polymer matrix. The duration of drug release was enhanced by the Increased patch thickness. The drug release rate was increased with increased amount of propylene gylcol as an enhancer.
The characteristics of controlled drug release were studied for a biodegradable drug delivery system. A biodegradable chitosan matrix was prepared after swelling chitosan with 10%-acetic acid and adding sulfadiazine. The release behavior of sulfadiazine from the chitosan matrix was studied using the Higuchi's diffusion controlled model in phosphate buffer solutions of pH 7.4 and pH 1.2. The drug release time was delayed by increasing the content of sulfadiazine. The drug release at pH 7.4 was more delayed than that at pH 1.2. The reason is that chitosan has greater swelling abilities at low pH than at high pH. The apparent release rate constant(K) increased as the concentration of drug increased. In shoat, the formulation the biodegradable chitosan matrix to suppress the burst effect of drug release mechanism, which led to a sustained release pattern.
Implantable biodegradable wafers were prepared with pamidronate -loaded poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, 75 : 25 mole ratio by lactide to glycolide, molecular weight : 20000 and 90000 g/mole) by direct compression method for the sustained release of pamidronate to investigate the possibility for the treatment of bone resorption. Pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders were prepared by means of physical mixing and spray drying with the control of formulation factors and characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders fabricated into wafers by direct compression under the constant pressure and time at room temperature. These wafers were also observed for their structural characteristic, release pattern, and degradation pattern. The release rate of pamidronate increased with increasing their initial loading ratio as well as increasing wafer thickness. The molecular weight of PLGA affects the release pattern : the higher molecular weight of PLGA, the faster release rate. It can be explained that the higher viscosity of high molecular PLGA solution at same concentration tends to aggregate PLGA and pamidronate resulting in unstable pharmaceutical dosage form. This system had advantages in terms of simplicity in design and obviousness of drug release rate and nay be useful as an implantable dosage form for the treatment of aural cholesteatoma.
