  • The weight of small animal dosimetry has been continuously increased in pre-clinical studies using radiation in small animals. In this study, three-dimensional(3D) small animal phantom was fabricated using 3D printer which has been continuously used and studied in the various fields. The absorbed dose of 3D animal phantom was evaluated by film dosimetry. Previously, the response of film was obtained from the materials used for production of 3D small animal phantom and compared with the bolus used as the tissue equivalent material in the radiotherapy. When irradiated with gamma rays from 0.5 Gy to 6 Gy, it was confirmed that there was a small difference of less than 1% except 0.5 Gy dose. And when small animal phantom was irradiated with 5 Gy, the difference between the irradiated dose and calculated dose from film was within 2%. Based on this study, it would be possible to increase the reliability of dose in pre-clinical studies using irradiation in small animals by evaluating dose of 3D small animal phantom.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potency of panoramic radiography for the detection of maxillary impacted canines. Methods: Twenty-five patients were selected, comprised of 7 males (mean age: 10.9 years, range: 8.5 - 14.5 years) and 18 females (mean age: 10.9 years, range: 8.2 - 15.7 years). In total, thirty-five maxillary impacted canines were estimated. The position of the canine and root resorption of adjacent teeth were evaluated on panoramic radiography and 3D CT. Results: Except for angulation to the occlusal plane, the other parameters, such as tooth length, crown width, vertical distance and lateral shift showed larger values on panoramic radiography compared to 3D CT. In palatally impacted cases, the angulation of canine was smaller, and the vertical distance to the occlusal place was larger on panoramic radiography than 3D CT. For labially impacted canines, tooth length, crown width, and angulation to the occlusal plane were similar for the two methods. The sensitivity for detecting root resorption on panoramic radiography was calculated as being 33.3% of 3D CT. Conclusions: The position of labially impacted canines can be effectively estimated using panoramic radiography, but palatally impacted canines need further investigation such as 3D CT for proper diagnosis.

  • Radiation therapy using flattening filter free beam can prevent beam attenuation caused by flattening filter and can improve treatment efficiency. However, accurate dose control is not established for nonuniform iso dose distributions. In this study, curved dosimeter based on photoconductive material $HgI_2$ was fabricated and its reproducibility and linearity were evaluated at 6 MV photon energy to verify its performance. In order to show the usefulness of the curved measurement, the signals measured on the flat substrate and the curved substrate were compared in the flattening filter free beam using the acrylic filter. As a result, the reproducibility of the unit cell dosimeter was evaluated as SE 0.613%, and the linearity was evaluated as R-sq 0.9999. The usability evaluation of the array curve dosimeter demonstrated its usefulness by indicating a curvature error rate of 11.073%p and a reduced error rate.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how the mesio-distal angulation and the length of each tooth changes on panoramic radiograph at different bucco-lingual inclinations. Methods: After constructing an acrylic model based on the mean arch of 30 adults with normal occlusion, the wire was placed in the center of the teeth on the acrylic model. First, the wire was implanted in normal angulation and inclination and a panoramic radiograph taken. After changing the inclination from $I-5^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}\;by\;5^{\circ}$, a panoramic radiograph was taken again and the mesio-distal angle and wire length on the panoramic radiograph were assessed. Results: When the wire was implanted at the normal angulation and inclination, the length measured in the panoramic radiograph was magnified $111{\sim}117%$ from the original length in the anterior region and $121{\sim}125%$ in the posterior region. Only the central and lateral incisors showed significant length differences when the inclination was changed from $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$ at fixed angulation. When the inclination was changed from $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$, the angulation of most teeth on panoramic radiograph appeared to be more disto-angulated than in reality, and the lateral incisor and canine showed the largest difference. Only $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$ groups of premolars and $I+15^{\circ}$ group of molars showed more mesio-angulation than in reality. As the labio(bucco)lingual inclination of all teeth were decreased, tooth angulation in the panoramic radiograph appeared to be more disto-angulated. Conclusion: The labio-liugual inclination of teeth should be considered because it affects panoramic image of teeth, such as length of incisors and angulation of other teeth.

  • During the maintenance period at Korean nuclear power plants, internal exposure of radiation workers occurred by the inhalation of $^{131}I$ released to the reactor building when primary system was opened. The internal radioactivity of radiation workers contaminated by $^{131}I$ was immediately measured using a whole body counter and the whole body counting was performed again after a few days. In this study, the intake estimated from the record history of entrance to radiation control areas and the measurement results of air sampling for $^{131}I$ in those areas, were compared with that from the results of whole body counting. As a result, it was concluded that the intake estimation using whole body counting and air sampling showed similar results.

  • In case of radiation emergencies, radioactive materials released into environments can cause internal exposure of members of the public. Even though whole body counters are widely used for direct measurement of internally deposited radionuclides, those are not likely to be used at the field to rapidly screen internal exposure. In this study, we estimated the counting efficiencies of portable NaI detector for different size BOMAB phantoms using Monte Carlo transport code to apply handheld gamma spectrometers for rapid screening of internal exposure following radiological accidents. As a result of comparison for two counting geometries, counting efficiencies for sitting model were about 1.1 times higher than those for standing model. We found, however, that differences of counting efficiencies according to different size are higher than those according to counting geometry. Therefore, we concluded that when we assess internal exposure of small size people compared to the reference male, the body size should be considered to estimate more accurate radioactivity in the human body because counting efficiencies of 4-year old BOMAB phantom were about 2.4~3.1 times higher than those of reference male BOMAB phantom.

  • Making a precise and ideal set-up model is an essential part in the indirect bonding procedure for lingual orthodontic treatment. To evaluate the accuracy of the making a set-up model, 22 adult patients who received lingual orthodontic treatment with 4 bicuspid extractions were selected, and 3 sets of dental models (before, set-up, and after treatment) were measured using the set-up model gauge, an instrument for measuring the inclination and angulation of the clinical crowns on the dental model. Two sets of lateral cephalograms (before and after) from each patient were also evaluated. The mean difference between the before treatment model and the set-up model was $-3.93{\pm}6.98^{\circ}$ for the inclination and $1.87{\pm}5.79^{\circ}$ for the angulation. And the mean difference between the set-up model and the after treatment model was $-4.31{\pm}5.91^{\circ}$ labiolingually and $-2.16{\pm}3.27^{\circ}$ mesiodistally, The after treatment model differed from the before treatment model about $-8.24{\pm}5.39^{\circ}$ in inclination. There were no significant difference between the measured gauge that measured from the dental model using the set-up model gauge and the calculated gauge angle measured from the lateral cephalogram using constructed points and lines. Using the set-up model gauge, it is possible to evaluate the study model 3-dimensionally in relation with the patient's lateral cephalogram and establish whether the doctor's prescription or overcorrection is built in the set-up model precisely.

  • The present study was designed to formulate cephalometric norms of normal occlusion for usage in orthodontic diagnosis of malocclusion in Korean children. Thirty two children, aged 4 to 6, with normal occlusion were chosen for this study, Sagittal and vertical relations were analyzed using lateral cephalogram and clinical photos and the measurements were compared with those of adults. On skeletal sagittal analysis, the mean values of the SNA and SNB angles were $83^{\circ}\;and\;78.72^{\circ}$. It showed that the mandible was retrognathic and retropositioned in comparison to those of adults. On skeletal vertical analysis, the mean values of the genial angle was $127^{\circ}$. This showed high angle pattern in children and reduction of genial angle due to counterclockwise rotation of the mandible is expected with growth. On soft tissue analysis, children showed convex pronto, obtuse nasolabial angle. On dental analysis, the mean values of the U1 to SN and IMPA were $91.04^{\circ}\;and\;86.57^{\circ}$. This showed retroclined upper and lower deciduous teeth in comparison to adults. For skeletal values, the liner values were generally greater in males than females.

  • This study purports to make in consideration of the recent xeroradiographic development an exact analysis, by comparison, of conventional cephalometry and xeroradiographic cephalometry that are indispensably utilized in the field of orthodontics as a means of cephalometric measuring For that purpose attached to ten landmarks on a dry skull was a lead ball, a radio-opaque substance, and projected X-ray beam one time each by means of the two methods, and then ten times each without change of locations of the skull, in the state in which the lead ball was removed. These data were committed to ten dentists for tracing to determine a difference between the same kind of cephalometries. A computerized statistic analysis of the data shows findings, as follows: 1. Conventional cephalometry shows higher accuracy in Nasion, as compared with xeroradiographic cephalometry. 2. Xeroradiographic cephalometry is found more accurate in Anterior Nasal Spine, 'A' Point, Pogonion, Gonion, Porion, Prosthion and Orbitale than conventional cephalometry. 3. There is no difference between both methods in Basion. 4. At test between the two methods by all the dentists reveals that xeroradiographic cephalometry is more accurate than conventional cephalometry.
