Pronunciation Variation Modeling for Korean Point-of-Interest Data Using Prosodic Information (운율 정보를 이용한 한국어 위치 정보 데이타의 발음 모델링)

  • This paper examines how the performance of an automatic speech recognizer was improved for Korean Point-of-Interest (POI) data by modeling pronunciation variation using structural prosodic information such as prosodic words and syllable length. First, multiple pronunciation variants are generated using prosodic words given that each POI word can be broken down into prosodic words. And the cross-prosodic-word variations were modeled considering the syllable length of word. A total of 81 experiments were conducted using 9 test sets (3 baseline and 6 proposed) on 9 trained sets (3 baseline, 6 proposed). The results show: (i) the performance was improved when the pronunciation lexica were generated using prosodic words; (ii) the best performance was achieved when the maximum number of variants was constrained to 3 based on the syllable length; and (iii) compared to the baseline word error rate (WER) of 4.63%, a maximum of 8.4% in WER reduction was achieved when both prosodic words and syllable length were considered.

  • Statistical information about spoken Korean was obtained. The data are the results of analyzing the Korean phonetic dictionary. This is one of the basic survey to make phoneme ballanced corpus of Korean Speech Data Base (KSDB).

  • 본 논문에서는 언어학적 단위인 형태소의 특성을 유지하면서 음성인식 과정에 적합한 분리 기준의 새로운 디코딩 단위인 의사형태소(Pseudo-Morpheme)를 정의 하였다. 이러한 필요성을 확인하기 위해 새로이 정의된 40개의 품사 태그를 갖는 의사 형태소를 표제어 단위로 삼아 발음사전 생성과 형태소 해석에 초점을 두고 한국어 연속음성 인식 시스템을 구성하였다.

The Effect of Convergence for Pronunciation and Listening Activities on Listening Ability and Learning Interests (발음과 듣기 융합 활동이 영어 듣기 능력과 학습 흥미에 미치는 영향)

  • The English language listening environment in Korea nowadays is situated in a quiet and artificial state rather than one of natural exposure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of convergence for pronunciation and listening activities using English advertisements. A survey sample of 40 students was chosen for this study. These 40 students successfully answered the questionnaire and took a 3 hour English course as an elective. Pre and post surveys tests were done for listening ability and learning interests. For the listening tests, TOEIC L.C. test were used and survey questions about interests made by Sunhee Park were revised to be proper used. The results of this study show a positive impact on TOEIC listening ability and that students are able to listen and naturally pronounce more successfully through convergence using English advertisements with higher learning motivation.

Korean Learning Assistant System with Automatically Extracted Knowledge (자동 추출된 지식에 기반한 한국어 학습 지원 시스템)

  • Computer aided language learning has become popular. But the level of automation of constructing a Korean learning assistant system is not so high because a practical language learning system needs large scale knowledge resources, which is very hard to acquire. In this paper, we propose a Korean learning assistant system that utilizes easily obtainable knowledge resources like a corpus, web documents and a lexicon. Our system has three modules - problem solving, pronunciation marker and writing assistant. Automatic problem generator uses a corpus and a lexicon to make problems with one correct answer and three distracters, then verifies their suitability by utilizing frequency information from web documents. We analyze pronunciation rules for a pronunciation marker and recommend appropriate words and sentences in real-time by using data extracted from a corpus. In experiment, we evaluate 400 automatically generated problems, which show 89.9% problem suitability and 64.9% example suitability.

Psychological Effects of Gamification on Young Learners: Focusing on a Serious Game for English Phoneme Discrimination (기능성게임을 활용한 게이미피케이션 영어 발음 학습이 초등학생의 정의적 영역에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the psychological effects of using a serious game with young learners in the English classroom compared with those of a dictionary application. A tablet PC-based serious game was created for the training of English phoneme discrimination for Korean 6th graders, and its psychological effects were measured using a paper-based survey and face-to-face interviews. The overall results revealed that the serious game had more positive psychological effects on young learners than the dictionary app. These findings provide supporting empirical evidence for using serious games in English classrooms.

A Study on the Effects of Read Along by Google with Primary ELLs' Pronunciation and Affective Domains (구글 Read Along 앱 활용이 초등영어학습자의 발음과 정의적 영역에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Read Along by Google with primary English learners' pronunciation and affective domains. In order to answer these two questions, a 4-week pilot study was conducted with 24 participants in the 6 th grade. Read Along as a main learning tool was utilized for a reading-aloud activity, and a pre-/post pronunciation test and survey on the affective factors were distributed as a research instrument. The results indicated that a read-aloud activity with Read Along brought a positive impact on the development of learners' pronunciation ability in terms of accuracy and fluency. Participants showed improvement in the post-pronunciation test, compared to the pre-one and there was a significant difference based on the result of the paired samples t-test. Next, the results of the survey on the affective domains illustrated that participants showed overall improvement in learning interest and confidence and there was a significant difference in these factors. Yet, there was not a significant difference in the learning attitude, even though they showed partial improvement.

A Study on the Implementatin of Vocalbulary Independent Korean Speech Recognizer (가변어휘 음성인식기 구현에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 사용자가 별도의 훈련과정 없이 인식대상 어휘를 추가 및 변경이 가능한 가변어휘 인식시스템에 관하여 기술한다. 가변어휘 음성인식에서는 미리 구성된 음소모델을 토대로 인식대상 어휘가 결정되명 발음사전에 의거하여 이들 어휘에 해당하는 음소모델을 연결함으로써 단어모델을 만든다. 사용된 음소모델은 현재 음소의 앞뒤의 음소 context를 고려한 문맥종속형(Context-Dependent)음소모델인 triphone을 사용하였고, 연속확률분포를 가지는 Hidden Markov Model(HMM)기반의 고립단어인식 시스템을 구현하였다. 비교를 위해 문맥 독립형 음소모델인 monophone으로 인식실험을 병행하였다. 개발된 시스템은 음성특징벡터로 MFCC(Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient)를 사용하였으며, test 환경에서 나타나지 않은 unseen triphone 문제를 해결하기 위하여 state-tying 방법중 음성학적 지식에 기반을 둔 tree-based clustering 기법을 도입하였다. 음소모델 훈련에는 ETRI에서 구축한 POW (Phonetically Optimized Words) 음성 데이터베이스(DB)[1]를 사용하였고, 어휘독립인식실험에는 POW DB와 관련없는 22개의 부서명을 50명이 발음한 총 1.100개의 고립단어 부서 DB[2]를 사용하였다. 인식실험결과 문맥독립형 음소모델이 88.6%를 보인데 비해 문맥종속형 음소모델은 96.2%의 더 나은 성능을 보였다.

남북한 과학기술용어

  • 지난 호에서도 언급한 바와 같이 컴퓨터용어는 아직 순화단계에 있어 남한에서도 통일된 것이 없고, 같은 영어 낱말을 여러 가지로 사용하는 경우가 많다. 예로 「interrupt」를 정익사판 컴퓨터용어사전에는 「인터럽트」로 영어발음을 그대로 우리말로 표기한 반면, 다른 용어사전에서는 「가로채기」, 「개입중단」등으로 되어 있다. 현재 남한에서 발간 된 컴퓨터용어 관련자료로는 크라운사, 교학사, 대은사 및 정익사 발행의 컴퓨터용어사전과 하이텔 이용자 모임순화안, 서울대 뉴미디어통신공동연구소 HDTV용어사전, 한국과학기술원 인공지능연구센터안, 교육부 편수자료 등이 있고 1993년 1월에 발간된 문화체육부의 전산기 기본용어 순화시안이 최신 것이라 하겠다. 이곳에서는 주로 1990년 정익사에서 출판한 한국정보과학회편 「컴퓨터용어사전」과 1986년 북한의 과학, 백과사전 출판사에서 발간한 전웅편저「전자계산기프로그람용어사전」을 참조하여 비교하였고, 참고로 문화체육부에서 내어놓은 순화시안도 함께 병기하였다. 지면상 모든 용어를 비교한다는 것은 불가능하여 남한과 북한에서 서로 다르게 부르는 용어 중 일부분만을 다음 표에 나열한다.
